The Gibeonite Deception
1Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)— 2they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.
3However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded9:4 Most Hebrew manuscripts; some Hebrew manuscripts, Vulgate and Syriac (see also Septuagint) They prepared provisions and loaded their donkeys with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. 5They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. 6Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, “We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.”
7The Israelites said to the Hivites, “But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?”
8“We are your servants,” they said to Joshua.
But Joshua asked, “Who are you and where do you come from?”
9They answered: “Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the Lord your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt, 10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. 11And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, “We are your servants; make a treaty with us.” ’ 12This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is. 13And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.”
14The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. 15Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.
16Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them. 17So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim. 18But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel.
The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, 19but all the leaders answered, “We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. 20This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.” 21They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers in the service of the whole assembly.” So the leaders’ promise to them was kept.
22Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by saying, ‘We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us? 23You are now under a curse: You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
24They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. 25We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.”
26So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. 27That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose. And that is what they are to this day.
Josua anfaller kungarna i söder

Givons invånare lurar Josua
3Men när invånarna i Givon hörde vad Josua hade gjort med Jeriko och Aj, 4beslöt de att försöka rädda sig med list. De skickade iväg sändebud till Josua med åsnor lastade med gamla säckar, utslitna, spruckna och lappade vinsäckar. 5Sändebuden tog på sig slitna, lagade sandaler och gamla, utslitna kläder. Deras färdkost var torrt och smuligt bröd. 6När de kom fram till lägret i Gilgal, sa de till Josua och männen i Israel: ”Vi kommer från ett avlägset land. Slut förbund med oss!”
7”Hur ska vi kunna veta att ni inte bor här i närheten?” svarade israeliterna hivéerna. ”Hur ska vi då kunna sluta något förbund med er?”
8”Vi är dina tjänare”, svarade de. ”Men vad är ni då för ena?” frågade Josua. ”Var kommer ni ifrån?” 9”Vi, dina tjänare, kommer från ett land mycket långt borta”, fortsatte de. ”Vi har hört talas om Herrens, er Guds, makt och om allt han gjorde i Egypten 10och vad han gjorde med de amoreiska kungarna på andra sidan Jordan, Sichon, kungen i Heshbon, och Og, Bashans kung, som regerade i staden Ashtarot. 11Därför sa de äldste och folket till oss: ’Förbered er för en lång resa och gå till israeliterna och säg att vi är beredda att bli deras tjänare och ingå förbund med dem.’ 12Det här brödet var varmt och kom direkt ur ugnen när vi gav oss iväg, men som ni ser är det nu torrt och smuligt. 13De här vinsäckarna var nya när vi fyllde dem, men nu är de gamla och spruckna och våra kläder och skor har hunnit bli utslitna under vår långa resa.”
14Männen tog då av deras mat9:14,15 Att äta tillsammans var en del av ritualen då man ingick förbund. och brydde sig inte om att fråga Herren. 15Josua slöt ett fredsförbund med dem där han lovade att de skulle få leva och ledarna i menigheten bekräftade det med en ed.
16Tre dagar efter att de slutit förbund kom det fram att männen i själva verket var givoniter, nära grannar9:16 Givon låg norr om Jerusalem. till Israel. 17Israeliterna drog då omedelbart iväg och nådde efter tre dagar fram till deras städer, Givon, Kefira, Beerot och Kirjat-Jearim. 18Men på grund av den ed som Israels ledare hade avlagt inför Herren, Israels Gud, kunde de inte anfalla städerna. Israeliterna klagade högljutt på sina ledare, 19men deras ledare svarade: ”Vi har avlagt en ed inför Herren att vi inte ska anfalla dem och det löftet måste vi hålla. 20Vi måste låta dem få leva, för om vi bryter eden, kommer Herrens vrede över oss.”
21De fortsatte: ”Låt dem leva, men de får hugga ved och bära vatten åt hela menigheten.” Det blev som ledarna lovat dem.
22Josua sammankallade deras ledande män och frågade: ”Varför ljög ni för oss och påstod att ni bodde långt borta i ett avlägset land när ni bor här alldeles intill oss? 23Nu kommer en förbannelse att vila över er. Från den här stunden ska ni alltid tjäna som slavar som hugger ved och bär vatten i tjänst för min Guds hus.”
24”Vi, dina tjänare, hade fått reda på att Herren, din Gud, sagt till sin tjänare Mose att han skulle ge detta land åt er och utrota alla som bor här”, svarade de. ”Vi var rädda för våra liv, det var därför vi gjorde så här. 25Men nu är vi helt i dina händer och du kan göra med oss vad du vill.”
26Josua tillät inte israeliterna att döda dem, 27utan de fick bli vedhuggare och vattenbärare åt menigheten och vid Herrens altare på den plats Herren skulle välja ut. Detta är fortfarande deras uppgift.9:27 Förbundet varade i många hundra år. Givoniterna var med och byggde upp Jerusalem efter hemkomsten från Babylon cirka tusen år senare. Se Neh 3:7.
