Jonah’s Anger at the Lord’s Compassion
1But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
4But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
5Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant4:6 The precise identification of this plant is uncertain; also in verses 7, 9 and 10. and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”
9But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”
10But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
تووڕەبوونی یونس بەهۆی بەزەیی یەزدان
1بەڵام ئەمە یونسی زۆر پەست کرد و ڕقی هەستا. 2نزای بۆ یەزدان کرد و گوتی: «ئای ئەی یەزدان، ئایا ئەمە قسەی من نەبوو کە هێشتا لە خاکی خۆمدا بووم؟ لەبەر ئەوە هەوڵی هەڵاتنم دا بۆ تەرشیش، چونکە زانیم تۆ خودایەکی میهرەبانیت و بە بەزەییت، پشوودرێژیت و خۆشەویستییە نەگۆڕەکەت زۆرە، لە خراپەهێنان بەسەر خەڵکی پاشگەز دەبیتەوە. 3ئێستاش ئەی یەزدان، گیانم لێ بستێنە، چونکە مردنم باشترە لە ژیانم.»
4یەزدانیش فەرمووی: «ئایا کارێکی باشە تووڕە بیت؟»
5ئینجا یونس لە شارەکە چووە دەرەوە و لە ڕۆژهەڵاتی شارەکە دانیشت، لەوێ کەپرێکی بۆ خۆی دروستکرد و لەژێر سێبەرەکەیدا دانیشت، بۆ ئەوەی ببینێت چی لە شارەکەدا ڕوودەدات. 6یەزدانی پەروەردگاریش ڕووەکێکی ئامادە کرد و لەسەر یونس بەرزی کردەوە، هەتا ببێتە سێبەر لە سەری، بۆ ئەوەی لە خەمەکەی دەربازی بکات. یونسیش زۆر دڵی بە ڕووەکەکە خۆش بوو. 7بەڵام خودا لە بەرەبەیاندا کرمێکی ئامادە کرد، کرمەکە لە ڕووەکەکەی دا و وشکی کرد. 8لە کاتی خۆر هەڵاتندا خودا بایەکی ڕۆژهەڵاتی گەرمی ئامادە کرد، هەتاو لەسەری یونسی دا و گێژی کرد، ئەویش داوای مردنی بۆ خۆی کرد و گوتی: «مردنم باشترە لە ژیانم.»
9خوداش بە یونسی فەرموو: «ئایا کارێکی باشە لەبەر ڕووەکەکە تووڕە بیت؟»
ئەویش گوتی: «بەڵێ، من ڕاستم. هەتا ئاستی مردن تووڕەم.»
10یەزدانیش فەرمووی: «تۆ دڵت بە ڕووەکەکە سووتا کە پێوەی ماندوو نەبوویت و بەخێوت نەکردووە، بە یەک شەو بوو، هەر بە یەک شەویش لەناوچوو. 11ئەی باشە نەینەوا، ئەو شارە مەزنە کە زیاد لە سەد و بیست هەزار کەسی تێدایە، ڕاستیان لە چەپیان جیا ناکەنەوە، هەروەها ئەو هەموو ئاژەڵە زۆرەش کە تێیدایە، دڵم پێیان نەسووتێت؟»
