1“At this my heart pounds
and leaps from its place.
2Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice,
to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
3He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven
and sends it to the ends of the earth.
4After that comes the sound of his roar;
he thunders with his majestic voice.
When his voice resounds,
he holds nothing back.
5God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
he does great things beyond our understanding.
6He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’
7So that everyone he has made may know his work,
he stops all people from their labor.37:7 Or work, / he fills all people with fear by his power
8The animals take cover;
they remain in their dens.
9The tempest comes out from its chamber,
the cold from the driving winds.
10The breath of God produces ice,
and the broad waters become frozen.
11He loads the clouds with moisture;
he scatters his lightning through them.
12At his direction they swirl around
over the face of the whole earth
to do whatever he commands them.
13He brings the clouds to punish people,
or to water his earth and show his love.
14“Listen to this, Job;
stop and consider God’s wonders.
15Do you know how God controls the clouds
and makes his lightning flash?
16Do you know how the clouds hang poised,
those wonders of him who has perfect knowledge?
17You who swelter in your clothes
when the land lies hushed under the south wind,
18can you join him in spreading out the skies,
hard as a mirror of cast bronze?
19“Tell us what we should say to him;
we cannot draw up our case because of our darkness.
20Should he be told that I want to speak?
Would anyone ask to be swallowed up?
21Now no one can look at the sun,
bright as it is in the skies
after the wind has swept them clean.
22Out of the north he comes in golden splendor;
God comes in awesome majesty.
23The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power;
in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress.
24Therefore, people revere him,
for does he not have regard for all the wise in heart?37:24 Or for he does not have regard for any who think they are wise.”
1O meu coração treme com estas coisas.
2Escuta, escuta o trovão da sua voz,
que ecoa através dos céus!
3Os seus relâmpagos dardejam em todas as direções.
4Depois vem o rugir dos trovões;
ali ecoa a voz tremenda da sua majestade;
quando a sua voz ressoa, ninguém se aguenta em pé.
5Em cada trovão, essa voz é cheia de glória;
não podemos compreender a grandeza do seu poder.
6Porque ele diz à neve, aos aguaceiros e às tempestades
para caírem sobre a Terra.
7Nessas ocasiões, o trabalho do homem cessa,
para que toda a gente possa reconhecer o seu poder.
8Os animais selvagens escondem-se nas rochas e nas tocas.
9O vento do sul traz a chuva;
o do norte, o frio.
10Deus sopra sobre as torrentes
e até os rios mais vastos gelam.
11Carrega as nuvens com humidade
e elas disparam relâmpagos.
12Os raios são dirigidos pela sua mão
e fazem o que lhes manda, por toda a Terra.
13Manda tempestades, ora como castigo para os homens,
ora para regar favoravelmente a sua terra.
14Ouve, Job, detém-te um pouco!
Considera as maravilhas de Deus!
15Sabes como Deus controla toda a natureza
e como faz relampejar através das nuvens?
16Compreendes como é feito, o equilíbrio das nuvens,
por aquele que é perfeito em conhecimento?
17Percebes o calor que te incomoda, quando sopra o vento do sul
e há calma sobre a terra?
18Saberias tu estender o firmamento,
que é sólido como um espelho fundido?
19Tu, que julgas saber tanto, ensina-nos a nós
como deveremos aproximar-nos de Deus.
Somos, talvez, demasiado ignorantes para saber essas coisas!
20Poderá Deus ser notificado, de que eu vou falar?
Haverá algum homem que aceite,
de boa vontade, ser engolido vivo?
21Não podemos olhar para o Sol, por causa da sua luminosidade,
quando os ventos limpam o firmamento de nuvens.
22Do norte vêm resplendores de luz dourada;
Deus está rodeado de temível majestade.
23Não podemos, sequer, imaginar o poder do Todo-Poderoso!
Mesmo assim, é tão justo e misericordioso que não nos destrói.
24Não admira que toda a gente, em toda a parte, o tema!
Ele não se deixa impressionar pelo mais sábio dos homens.”
