1“Mortals, born of woman,
are of few days and full of trouble.
2They spring up like flowers and wither away;
like fleeting shadows, they do not endure.
3Do you fix your eye on them?
Will you bring them14:3 Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Hebrew me before you for judgment?
4Who can bring what is pure from the impure?
No one!
5A person’s days are determined;
you have decreed the number of his months
and have set limits he cannot exceed.
6So look away from him and let him alone,
till he has put in his time like a hired laborer.
7“At least there is hope for a tree:
If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
and its new shoots will not fail.
8Its roots may grow old in the ground
and its stump die in the soil,
9yet at the scent of water it will bud
and put forth shoots like a plant.
10But a man dies and is laid low;
he breathes his last and is no more.
11As the water of a lake dries up
or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,
12so he lies down and does not rise;
till the heavens are no more, people will not awake
or be roused from their sleep.
13“If only you would hide me in the grave
and conceal me till your anger has passed!
If only you would set me a time
and then remember me!
14If someone dies, will they live again?
All the days of my hard service
I will wait for my renewal14:14 Or release to come.
15You will call and I will answer you;
you will long for the creature your hands have made.
16Surely then you will count my steps
but not keep track of my sin.
17My offenses will be sealed up in a bag;
you will cover over my sin.
18“But as a mountain erodes and crumbles
and as a rock is moved from its place,
19as water wears away stones
and torrents wash away the soil,
so you destroy a person’s hope.
20You overpower them once for all, and they are gone;
you change their countenance and send them away.
21If their children are honored, they do not know it;
if their offspring are brought low, they do not see it.
22They feel but the pain of their own bodies
and mourn only for themselves.”
1Omul născut din femeie
are zile puține,
dar pline de necaz.
2Răsare ca o floare și se usucă;
fuge ca o umbră și nu rămâne.
3Ai Tu ochii ațintiți asupra unui astfel de om?
Mă chemi Tu la judecată cu Tine?
4Cine poate scoate ceva curat din ceva necurat?
Nimeni!
5Zilele omului sunt hotărâte.
Tu cunoști numărul lunilor lui
și i‑ai pus hotare pe care nu le poate trece.
6Așa că întoarce‑Ți privirea de la el și lasă‑l,
în timp ce se bucură ca un zilier de ziua lui.
7Căci, pentru un copac, mai este speranță:
dacă este tăiat, el continuă să se schimbe,
și lăstarii lui nu încetează să crească.
8Deși rădăcina îi îmbătrânește în pământ
și‑i piere trunchiul în țărână,
9la mireasma apei va înmuguri
și va da ramuri ca o plantă.
10Ființa umană însă, când moare, își pierde toată vlaga;
omul, după ce își dă ultima suflare, nu mai este.
11Așa cum apele se evaporă din mare,
iar râul seacă și se usucă,
12tot așa omul se culcă și nu se mai ridică;
cât vor fi cerurile nu se mai trezește,
nici nu se mai scoală din somnul lui.
13O, de m‑ai ascunde în Locuința Morților,
de m‑ai acoperi până Îți trece mânia
și de mi‑ai hotărî o vreme când să‑Ți amintești de mine!
14Dacă un om moare, oare va mai trăi?
În toate zilele trudei mele,
aș aștepta până va veni schimbarea trupului meu.
15Atunci mă vei chema, și‑Ți voi răspunde;
vei tânji după lucrarea mâinilor Tale.
16Atunci îmi vei număra pașii
și nu‑mi vei mai ține în seamă păcatul;
17vei pecetlui fărădelegea mea într‑un sac
și‑mi vei acoperi nelegiuirea.
18Dar așa cum munții cad și se surpă,
iar stânca este mutată din locul ei
19și așa cum apa sapă în piatră,
iar torenții spală pământul,
tot așa distrugi Tu speranța omului.
20Îl învingi pentru totdeauna și el se duce;
îi schimbi înfățișarea și apoi îl izgonești.
21Dacă fiii lui sunt onorați, el nu știe,
dacă sunt înjosiți, el nu vede.
22El simte doar durerea trupului său
și bocește doar pentru sine.“
