The Fall of Babylon
1“Go down, sit in the dust,
Virgin Daughter Babylon;
sit on the ground without a throne,
queen city of the Babylonians.47:1 Or Chaldeans; also in verse 5
No more will you be called
tender or delicate.
2Take millstones and grind flour;
take off your veil.
Lift up your skirts, bare your legs,
and wade through the streams.
3Your nakedness will be exposed
and your shame uncovered.
I will take vengeance;
I will spare no one.”
4Our Redeemer—the Lord Almighty is his name—
is the Holy One of Israel.
5“Sit in silence, go into darkness,
queen city of the Babylonians;
no more will you be called
queen of kingdoms.
6I was angry with my people
and desecrated my inheritance;
I gave them into your hand,
and you showed them no mercy.
Even on the aged
you laid a very heavy yoke.
7You said, ‘I am forever—
the eternal queen!’
But you did not consider these things
or reflect on what might happen.
8“Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure,
lounging in your security
and saying to yourself,
‘I am, and there is none besides me.
I will never be a widow
or suffer the loss of children.’
9Both of these will overtake you
in a moment, on a single day:
loss of children and widowhood.
They will come upon you in full measure,
in spite of your many sorceries
and all your potent spells.
10You have trusted in your wickedness
and have said, ‘No one sees me.’
Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you
when you say to yourself,
‘I am, and there is none besides me.’
11Disaster will come upon you,
and you will not know how to conjure it away.
A calamity will fall upon you
that you cannot ward off with a ransom;
a catastrophe you cannot foresee
will suddenly come upon you.
12“Keep on, then, with your magic spells
and with your many sorceries,
which you have labored at since childhood.
Perhaps you will succeed,
perhaps you will cause terror.
13All the counsel you have received has only worn you out!
Let your astrologers come forward,
those stargazers who make predictions month by month,
let them save you from what is coming upon you.
14Surely they are like stubble;
the fire will burn them up.
They cannot even save themselves
from the power of the flame.
These are not coals for warmth;
this is not a fire to sit by.
15That is all they are to you—
these you have dealt with
and labored with since childhood.
All of them go on in their error;
there is not one that can save you.
سقوط بابل
1خداوند می‌گويد: «ای بابل، از تخت خود به زير بيا و بر خاک بنشين، زيرا دوران عظمت تو به سر آمده است. تو زمانی مانند يک شاهزادهٔ باكره، لطيف و نازنين بودی، اما اينک برده‌ای بيش نيستی. 2دستاس را بگير و گندم را آرد كن. روبندت را بردار، دامنت را بالا بزن تا از نهرها عبور كنی.47:2 «از نهرها عبور کنی» احتمالاً اشاره‌ای است به تبعيد شدن بابلی‌ها. 3تو عريان و رسوا خواهی شد. من از تو انتقام خواهم گرفت و به تو رحم نخواهم كرد.»
4بلی، خدای مقدس اسرائيل كه نامش خداوند قادر متعال است ما را از دست بابل نجات خواهد داد!
5خداوند به بابل می‌گويد: «ای بابل، در تاريكی بنشين و خاموش باش. ديگر تو را ”ملكهٔ ممالک“ نخواهند خواند. 6ای بابل، من بر قوم خود اسرائيل خشمگين بودم و برای اينكه آنان را تنبيه كرده باشم، اجازه دادم به چنگ تو بيفتند، اما تو بر آنان رحم نكردی و حتی پيران را به انجام كارهای سخت واداشتی. 7تو گمان كردی هميشه ملكه خواهی بود؛ و هرگز به عاقبت كار خود نينديشيدی.
8«ای مملكت خوشگذران كه فكر می‌كنی در امن و امان هستی، گوش كن. تو خود را مانند خدا، بی‌نظير می‌دانی. می‌گويی: ”من هرگز بيوه نخواهم شد. هيچگاه فرزندانم را از دست نخواهم داد.“ 9اما با وجود تمام جادوگری‌هايت، در يک لحظه و در يک روز اين دو بلا بر سرت خواهد آمد: هم بيوه می‌شوی و هم بی‌اولاد.
10«تو با خيال راحت به شرارت خود ادامه دادی و گمان كردی هيچكس تو را نمی‌بيند. علم و دانش تو باعث شد منحرف شوی و به خود بگويی: ”من خدا هستم. غير از من خدايی نيست.“ 11بنابراين، بلا بر تو خواهم فرستاد و تو نخواهی توانست با سحر و جادويت آن را دفع كنی. ويرانی غيرمنتظره‌ای كه فكرش را نكرده‌ای بر تو خواهد آمد.
12«ارواح ناپاک را كه طی اين سالها پرستش می‌كردی احضار كن. آنها را صدا كن تا بيايند و به تو كمک كنند تا شايد باز بتوانی در دل دشمنانت ترس و وحشت ايجاد كنی! 13تو مشاوران زيادی داری طالع‌بينان و ستاره‌شناسانی كه می‌كوشند تو را از رويدادهای آينده آگاه سازند. آنها را فرا خوان تا به تو كمک كنند. 14اما بدان كه آنان همچون كاه در آتش خواهند سوخت. آنان قادر نخواهند بود حتی خود را نجات دهند، زيرا آن آتش، آتشی نخواهد بود كه آنان بخواهند خود را با آن گرم كنند، بلكه آتشی كه همه چيز را می‌سوزاند! 15تنها سودی كه از اين مشاوران ديرينه عايدت می‌شود همين است! همه آنان به راه خود خواهند رفت و تو را تنها خواهند گذاشت، و كسی نخواهد ماند تا تو را نجات دهد.»
