The Charge Against Israel
1Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites,
because the Lord has a charge to bring
against you who live in the land:
“There is no faithfulness, no love,
no acknowledgment of God in the land.
2There is only cursing,4:2 That is, to pronounce a curse on lying and murder,
stealing and adultery;
they break all bounds,
and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
3Because of this the land dries up,
and all who live in it waste away;
the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
and the fish in the sea are swept away.
4“But let no one bring a charge,
let no one accuse another,
for your people are like those
who bring charges against a priest.
5You stumble day and night,
and the prophets stumble with you.
So I will destroy your mother—
6my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.
“Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law of your God,
I also will ignore your children.
7The more priests there were,
the more they sinned against me;
they exchanged their glorious God4:7 Syriac (see also an ancient Hebrew scribal tradition); Masoretic Text me; / I will exchange their glory for something disgraceful.
8They feed on the sins of my people
and relish their wickedness.
9And it will be: Like people, like priests.
I will punish both of them for their ways
and repay them for their deeds.
10“They will eat but not have enough;
they will engage in prostitution but not flourish,
because they have deserted the Lord
to give themselves 11to prostitution;
old wine and new wine
take away their understanding.
12My people consult a wooden idol,
and a diviner’s rod speaks to them.
A spirit of prostitution leads them astray;
they are unfaithful to their God.
13They sacrifice on the mountaintops
and burn offerings on the hills,
under oak, poplar and terebinth,
where the shade is pleasant.
Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution
and your daughters-in-law to adultery.
14“I will not punish your daughters
when they turn to prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law
when they commit adultery,
because the men themselves consort with harlots
and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes—
a people without understanding will come to ruin!
15“Though you, Israel, commit adultery,
do not let Judah become guilty.
“Do not go to Gilgal;
do not go up to Beth Aven.4:15 Beth Aven means house of wickedness (a derogatory name for Bethel, which means house of God).
And do not swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’
16The Israelites are stubborn,
like a stubborn heifer.
How then can the Lord pasture them
like lambs in a meadow?
17Ephraim is joined to idols;
leave him alone!
18Even when their drinks are gone,
they continue their prostitution;
their rulers dearly love shameful ways.
19A whirlwind will sweep them away,
and their sacrifices will bring them shame.
Domnul acuză poporul și pe preoți
1Ascultați Cuvântul Domnului, fii ai lui Israel,
căci Domnul are o acuză
împotriva locuitorilor țării:
„Nu există credincioșie, nu există bunătate1 Sau: dragoste; sau: loialitate.,
nu există cunoștință de Dumnezeu în țară!
2Fiecare jură strâmb2 Sau: blestemă., înșală, ucide,
fură și comite adulter.
Ei năpăstuiesc,
iar vărsările de sânge se țin lanț.
3De aceea țara va boci
și toți cei ce locuiesc în ea vor fi sleiți.
Vietățile câmpului, păsările cerului,
precum și peștii mării vor pieri.
4Dar nimeni să nu certe pe altcineva,
niciun om să nu acuze pe altul.
Poporul tău este asemenea celor
ce se ceartă cu un preot.
5Te vei împiedica ziua,
iar profetul se va împiedica
împreună cu tine noaptea.
O voi nimici pe mama ta.
6Poporul Meu este nimicit
din lipsă de cunoștință.
Pentru că ai respins cunoștința,
și Eu te resping ca preot al Meu!
Fiindcă ai uitat Legea Dumnezeului tău,
și Eu îți voi uita fiii!
7Cu cât s‑au înmulțit7 Sau: îmbogățit. preoții,
cu atât au păcătuit mai mult împotriva Mea.
Ei au dat slava lor în schimbul rușinii.
8Ei mănâncă păcatele8 Sau: jertfele pentru păcat. poporului Meu
și le savurează sufletul după nelegiuirea lui.
9Dar și preotul va avea aceeași soartă cu cea a poporului:
îi voi pedepsi pe amândoi după căile lor,
le voi răsplăti după faptele lor.
Idolatria lui Israel
10Vor mânca, dar nu se vor sătura,
se vor prostitua, dar nu se vor înmulți,
căci L‑au părăsit pe Domnul
și s‑au dedat 11la desfrânare,
la vin și la must,
care le iau mințile.
12Poporul Meu își întreabă bucata de lemn
și un băț îi sfătuiește12 Vezi Eze. 21:21.,
căci un duh de curvie îi duce în rătăcire.
Ei se prostituează, fiind nesupuși Dumnezeului lor.
13Aduc jertfe pe vârfurile munților
și ard tămâie pe dealuri,
sub stejari, plopi și terebinți,
căci umbra lor este plăcută.
De aceea fetele voastre se prostituează
și nurorile voastre comit adulter.
14Nu le voi pedepsi pe fetele voastre
când se prostituează,
și nici pe nurorile voastre
când comit adulter,
căci bărbații înșiși se retrag deoparte cu prostituatele
și aduc jertfe cu hierodulele14 Prostituatele sacre, care practicau prostituția în temple..
Un astfel de popor căruia îi lipsește discernământul
va ajunge la ruină.
15Dacă tu, Israel, te prostituezi,
măcar Iuda să nu se facă vinovat!
Nu vă duceți la Ghilgal,
nu vă suiți la Bet‑Aven15 Bet‑Aven înseamnă Casa nelegiuirii, făcând referire, în sens depreciativ, la Betel, care înseamnă Casa lui Dumnezeu.
și nu jurați cu: «Viu este Domnul!»
16Israel este încăpățânat
ca o vacă îndărătnică.
Deci cum o s‑o mai pască Domnul
ca pe un miel pe o pășune întinsă?
17Efraim17 Prin Efraim se înțelege Israel, Regatul de Nord [peste tot în carte]. s‑a unit cu idolii;
lăsați‑l în pace!
18Când băutura lor s‑a sfârșit,18 Sau: O ceată de bețivi.
se prostituează neîncetat.

19Un vânt îi va înfășura cu aripile lui,
și ei vor fi făcuți de rușine
din cauza jertfelor lor.
