Melchizedek the Priest
1This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.
4Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! 5Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. 6This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. 8In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. 9One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.
Jesus Like Melchizedek
11If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? 12For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. 13He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar. 14For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17For it is declared:
“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”7:17 Psalm 110:4
18The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.
20And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:
“The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:
‘You are a priest forever.’ ”7:21 Psalm 110:4
22Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.
23Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25Therefore he is able to save completely7:25 Or forever those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
ปุโรหิตเมลคีเซเดค

4คิดดูเถิดเมลคีเซเดคทรงยิ่งใหญ่เพียงใด ที่แม้แต่อับราฮัมบรรพบุรุษของเรายังได้ถวายหนึ่งในสิบจากของที่ริบมาได้แด่พระองค์! 5บทบัญญัติระบุให้วงศ์วานเลวีผู้เป็นปุโรหิตนั้นรับสิบลดจากประชาชน นั่นคือจากพี่น้องของเขา ถึงแม้ว่าพี่น้องของเขาจะสืบเชื้อสายจากอับราฮัม 6ส่วนเมลคีเซเดคนี้ไม่ได้สืบเชื้อสายจากเลวี แต่ก็รับสิบลดจากอับราฮัมและอวยพรให้เขาผู้ได้รับพระสัญญา 7ไม่ต้องสงสัยเลยว่าผู้ใหญ่ย่อมให้พรผู้น้อย 8ในกรณีหนึ่งผู้รับสิบลดเป็นมนุษย์ซึ่งต้องตาย ส่วนอีกกรณีหนึ่งผู้รับสิบลดคือผู้ที่ได้รับการประกาศว่าทรงพระชนม์อยู่ 9อาจกล่าวได้ว่าเลวีผู้รับสิบลดนั้นได้ถวายสิบลดผ่านทางอับราฮัม 10เพราะเมื่อเมลคีเซเดคได้พบกับอับราฮัมนั้น เลวียังอยู่ในกายของอับราฮัมบรรพบุรุษของเขา
พระเยซูทรงเป็นเหมือนเมลคีเซเดค
11หากมนุษย์มาถึงความครบถ้วนบริบูรณ์ในพระเจ้าได้โดยทางระบอบปุโรหิตตามแบบของเลวีแล้ว (เพราะโดยพื้นฐานของระบอบนี้บทบัญญัติจึงมีมาถึงเหล่าประชากร) ทำไมยังต้องมีปุโรหิตอีกผู้หนึ่งซึ่งเป็นปุโรหิตตามแบบของเมลคีเซเดค ไม่ใช่ตามแบบของอาโรน? 12เพราะเมื่อมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงระบอบปุโรหิตก็ต้องมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงบทบัญญัติด้วย 13พระองค์ผู้ซึ่งสิ่งต่างๆ เหล่านี้บ่งถึงนั้นมาจากตระกูลอื่น และไม่มีใครจากตระกูลนั้นเคยปรนนิบัติที่แท่นบูชา 14เนื่องจากเห็นชัดเจนอยู่ว่าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าของเราทรงสืบสายจากตระกูลยูดาห์ ซึ่งเป็นตระกูลที่โมเสสไม่ได้กล่าวพาดพิงถึงเลยในเรื่องปุโรหิต 15และสิ่งที่เราได้กล่าวนั้นจะเห็นชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้นถ้าปุโรหิตอีกผู้หนึ่งเฉกเช่นเมลคีเซเดคปรากฏขึ้น 16ผู้ที่เป็นปุโรหิตโดยไม่ได้อาศัยกฎระเบียบการสืบทอดตามบรรพบุรุษของเขา แต่โดยอาศัยอานุภาพแห่งชีวิตซึ่งไม่อาจทำลายได้ 17ตามที่ประกาศไว้ว่า
“ท่านเป็นปุโรหิตชั่วนิรันดร์
ตามแบบของเมลคีเซเดค”7:17 สดด.110:4 เช่นเดียวกับข้อ 21
18กฎระเบียบเดิมถูกล้มเลิกไปเนื่องจากไม่มีประสิทธิภาพและเปล่าประโยชน์ 19(เพราะบทบัญญัติไม่ได้ทำให้สิ่งใดครบถ้วนสมบูรณ์ได้เลย) และมีการหยิบยื่นความหวังที่ดียิ่งกว่าซึ่งช่วยให้เราเข้าใกล้พระเจ้าได้
20และพระเจ้าทรงยืนยันเรื่องนี้ด้วยคำสาบาน! ขณะที่คนอื่นๆ ขึ้นเป็นปุโรหิตโดยไม่มีคำสาบานใดๆ 21แต่พระเยซูทรงขึ้นเป็นปุโรหิตด้วยคำสาบานเมื่อพระเจ้าตรัสกับพระองค์ว่า
“พระเจ้าได้ทรงปฏิญาณแล้ว
และจะไม่ทรงเปลี่ยนพระทัย คือ
‘ท่านเป็นปุโรหิตชั่วนิรันดร์’ ”
22เพราะด้วยคำสาบานนี้พระเยซูจึงทรงเป็นผู้ค้ำประกันพันธสัญญาซึ่งดียิ่งกว่า
23ปุโรหิตตระกูลเลวีนั้นต้องรับหน้าที่สืบทอดกันหลายคน เพราะความตายขัดขวางพวกเขาไม่ให้อยู่ในตำแหน่งนั้นตลอดไป 24แต่เพราะพระเยซูทรงพระชนม์อยู่เป็นนิตย์จึงทรงเป็นปุโรหิตถาวรนิรันดร์ 25ฉะนั้นพระองค์จึงทรงสามารถช่วยบรรดาผู้ที่มาถึงพระเจ้าโดยทางพระองค์ได้อย่างสมบูรณ์7:25 หรือตลอดไป เพราะพระองค์ทรงพระชนม์อยู่เสมอเพื่อที่จะทูลวิงวอนเพื่อเขาทั้งหลาย
26มหาปุโรหิตเช่นนี้แหละที่ตอบสนองความจำเป็นของเราได้ คือปุโรหิตผู้ทรงบริสุทธิ์ไร้ที่ติ ปราศจากมลทิน แยกจากคนบาป เป็นที่เทิดทูนเหนือฟ้าสวรรค์ 27พระเยซูไม่จำเป็นต้องถวายเครื่องบูชาทุกๆ วันเหมือนมหาปุโรหิตอื่นๆ ซึ่งตอนแรกต้องถวายเครื่องบูชาสำหรับบาปของตนเอง จากนั้นจึงถวายเครื่องบูชาสำหรับบาปของประชาชน พระเยซูทรงถวายพระองค์เองเป็นเครื่องบูชาสำหรับบาปของเขาทั้งหลายเพียงครั้งเดียวเป็นพอ 28บทบัญญัตินั้นแต่งตั้งมนุษย์ผู้อ่อนแอให้เป็นมหาปุโรหิต แต่คำปฏิญาณของพระเจ้าซึ่งมาภายหลังบทบัญญัติได้แต่งตั้งพระบุตรผู้ซึ่งทรงทำให้สมบูรณ์แล้วเป็นนิตย์
