Isaac and Abimelek
1Now there was a famine in the land—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar. 2The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live. 3Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham. 4I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring26:4 Or seed all nations on earth will be blessed,26:4 Or and all nations on earth will use the name of your offspring in blessings (see 48:20) 5because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.” 6So Isaac stayed in Gerar.
7When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
12Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him. 13The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy. 14He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him. 15So all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.
16Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.”
17So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled. 18Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek,26:20 Esek means dispute. because they disputed with him. 21Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.26:21 Sitnah means opposition. 22He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,26:22 Rehoboth means room. saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”
23From there he went up to Beersheba. 24That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”
25Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.
26Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces. 27Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?”
28They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you 29that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”
30Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank. 31Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33He called it Shibah,26:33 Shibah can mean oath or seven. and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.26:33 Beersheba can mean well of the oath and well of seven.
Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing
34When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
Isaac y Abimélec
1En ese tiempo hubo mucha hambre en aquella región, además de la que hubo en tiempos de Abraham. Por eso Isaac se fue a Guerar, donde se encontraba Abimélec, rey de los filisteos. 2Allí el Señor se apareció y le dijo: «No vayas a Egipto. Quédate en la región de la que te voy a hablar. 3Vive en ese lugar por un tiempo. Yo estaré contigo y te bendeciré, porque a ti y a tu descendencia daré todas esas tierras. Así confirmaré el juramento que hice a tu padre Abraham. 4Multiplicaré a tus descendientes como las estrellas del cielo y les daré todas esas tierras. Por medio de tu descendencia todas las naciones de la tierra serán bendecidas, 5porque Abraham me obedeció y cumplió mis órdenes y mis mandamientos, mis estatutos y mis leyes».
6Isaac se quedó en Guerar.
7Y cuando la gente del lugar preguntaba a Isaac acerca de su esposa, él respondía que ella era su hermana. Tan bella era Rebeca que Isaac tenía miedo de decir que era su esposa, pues pensaba que por causa de ella podrían matarlo.
8Isaac vivió allí un largo tiempo. Un día, Abimélec, el rey de los filisteos, miraba por una ventana, vio a Isaac acariciando a su esposa Rebeca. 9Entonces mandó llamar a Isaac y le dijo:
—¡Conque ella es tu esposa! ¿Por qué dijiste que era tu hermana?
—Yo pensé que por causa de ella podrían matarme —contestó Isaac.
10—¿Por qué nos hiciste esto? —respondió Abimélec—. Alguno de nosotros podría haberse acostado con tu esposa, ¡y tú nos habrías hecho a todos culpables de ese pecado!
11Por eso Abimélec envió esta orden a todo el pueblo:
—Si alguien molesta a este hombre o a su esposa, será condenado a muerte.
12Isaac sembró en aquella región y ese año cosechó al ciento por uno, porque el Señor lo había bendecido. 13Así Isaac fue acumulando riquezas, hasta que llegó a ser muy rico. 14Esto causó que los filisteos comenzaran a tenerle envidia, pues llegó a tener muchas ovejas, vacas y siervos. 15Ahora bien, los filisteos habían cegado todos los pozos de agua que los siervos del padre de Isaac habían cavado. 16Así que Abimélec dijo a Isaac:
—Aléjate de nosotros, pues ya eres más poderoso que nosotros.
17Isaac se fue de allí y acampó en el valle de Guerar, donde se quedó a vivir. 18Abrió nuevamente los pozos de agua que habían sido cavados en tiempos de su padre Abraham y que los filisteos habían tapado después de su muerte. Entonces les puso los mismos nombres que su padre les había dado.
19Cierta vez, cuando los siervos de Isaac estaban cavando en el valle, encontraron un manantial. 20Pero los pastores de Guerar discutieron acaloradamente con los pastores de Isaac, alegando que el agua era de ellos. Por eso Isaac llamó a ese pozo Esek,26:20 Esek en hebreo significa pelea. porque habían peleado con él. 21Después sus siervos cavaron otro pozo, por el cual también discutieron. Por eso Isaac lo llamó Sitna.26:21 Sitna en hebreo significa enemistad. 22Entonces Isaac se fue de allí y cavó otro pozo, pero esta vez no hubo ninguna discusión. A este pozo lo llamó Rejobot26:22 Rejobot en hebreo significa lugar ancho. y dijo: «El Señor nos ha dado mucho espacio para que prosperemos en esta región».
23De allí Isaac se dirigió a Berseba. 24Esa noche se apareció el Señor y le dijo: «Yo soy el Dios de tu padre Abraham. No temas, que yo estoy contigo. Por amor a mi siervo Abraham, te bendeciré y multiplicaré tu descendencia».
25Allí Isaac construyó un altar e invocó el nombre del Señor. Acampó en ese lugar y sus siervos cavaron un pozo.
26Cierto día, Abimélec fue a ver a Isaac desde Guerar. Llegó acompañado de su consejero Ajuzat y de Ficol, el comandante de su ejército. 27Isaac preguntó:
—Si tanto me odian, que hasta me echaron de su tierra, ¿para qué vienen a verme?
28—Nos hemos dado cuenta de que el Señor está contigo —respondieron—. Por eso, queremos proponerte que hagamos entre nosotros un trato bajo juramento. Ese pacto será el siguiente: 29Tú no nos harás ningún daño, ya que nosotros no te hemos perjudicado, sino que te hemos tratado bien y te hemos dejado ir en paz. ¡Ahora el bendecido del Señor eres tú!
30Isaac les preparó un banquete y comieron y bebieron. 31A la mañana siguiente se levantaron muy temprano e hicieron un compromiso mutuo. Luego Isaac los despidió y ellos se fueron en paz.
32Aquel mismo día, los siervos de Isaac fueron y le informaron acerca de un pozo que habían cavado y dijeron:
—¡Hemos encontrado agua!
33Isaac llamó a ese pozo Juramento.26:33 Juramento. Alt. Siete. Por eso la ciudad se llama Berseba26:33 En hebreo, Berseba puede significar Pozo del Juramento o Pozo de los Siete. hasta el día de hoy.
Isaac bendice a Jacob
34Esaú tenía cuarenta años cuando se casó con Judit hija de Beerí, el hitita. También se casó con Basemat, hija de un hitita llamado Elón. 35Estas dos mujeres causaron mucha amargura a Isaac y a Rebeca.
