Faith or Works of the Law
1You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?3:3 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit. 4Have you experienced3:4 Or suffered so much in vain—if it really was in vain? 5So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”3:6 Gen. 15:6
7Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”3:8 Gen. 12:3; 18:18; 22:18 9So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
10For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”3:10 Deut. 27:26 11Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”3:11 Hab. 2:4 12The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”3:12 Lev. 18:5 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”3:13 Deut. 21:23 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
The Law and the Promise
15Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,”3:16 Gen. 12:7; 13:15; 24:7 meaning one person, who is Christ. 17What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. 18For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.
19Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. 20A mediator, however, implies more than one party; but God is one.
21Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.
Children of God
23Before the coming of this faith,3:22,23 Or through the faithfulness of Jesus… 23 Before faith came we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.
26So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

律法ではなく信仰によって
1ああ、ガラテヤの皆さん。なんと物わかりが悪いのでしょう。いったいどんな魔術師にだまされて、魔法にかけられたのですか。私は、十字架上で死なれたキリストの姿を、絵のようにありありと目の前に示して、その死の意味をはっきりと教えたではありませんか。 2一つだけ聞いておきます。あなたがたは、なぜ聖霊をいただくことができたのですか。律法を守ろうと努力したからですか。キリストのことを聞き、その救いを信じて初めて、聖霊はあなたがたのところに来てくださったのです。 3とすると、信仰生活が聖霊によって始まったのに、どうして、律法を救いの条件とするのですか。 4あれほどの経験をしたあなたがたが、福音をあっさりと投げ捨ててしまうのですか。とても信じられないことです。 5もう一度聞きます。なぜ神様は、あなたがたに聖霊の力を与え、奇跡を見せてくださったのですか。律法を守ろうと努力したからですか。そうではないでしょう。キリストを信じ、全くお任せしたからです。
6アブラハムも同じ経験をしました。彼は神の約束を信じたというだけで、天国へ入る資格を与えられたのです。 7このことから、心から神に信頼する人はだれでも、アブラハムの真の子孫となることができるのです。 8聖書は、信仰を持った外国人が救われる時のことを予告してきました。神様がずっと昔、アブラハムに、「どこの国の人であろうと、あなたのようにわたしを信頼する人を祝福しよう」（創世12・3）と宣言されたのは、このことを意味していたのです。 9そういうわけで、キリストに信頼する人はみな、アブラハムと共に祝福をいただくのです。
10律法の行いに頼って救われようとする者は、神にのろわれます。なぜなら、聖書には、「神の律法の書にあることばを一つでも破る者は、のろわれる」（申命27・26）とはっきり書いてあるからです。 11したがって、律法によってはだれ一人、神の恵みを受けることはできないわけです。神の前で正しい者と認められる道は信仰による以外にない、と神様は言っておられます。預言者ハバククが、「正しい人は信仰によって生きる」（ハバクク2・4）と語ったとおりです。 12この信仰による道は、律法の行いによる道とはなんと違うことでしょう。律法による道は、律法を一つ残らず完全に守ることによって救われる、と教えているのですから。 13しかし自分の悪い行いのために、私たちが受けなければならないはずののろいを、キリストはご自分の身に引き受け、私たちを律法ののろいから救い出してくださいました。聖書に、「木にかけられる者はだれでも、のろわれた者である」（申命21・23）と書いてあるからです。
約束が先に与えられた
14神様は、アブラハムへの約束と同じ祝福を外国人にも与えておられます。そして、私たちは信仰によって約束の聖霊を受けるのです。
15愛する皆さん。日常生活で人間同士が約束をかわす場合でも、文書にして署名したら、もう変更はできません。あとになって、約束を破ることはできないのです。 16ところで、神様は一つの約束を、アブラハムとその「子」にお与えになりました。ここで「子ら」にではなく、「子」に与えられたと言われている点に注意してください。「子ら」と言えば、アブラハムの子孫であるユダヤ人全部を指すことになります。しかし、「子」と言えば、キリストを意味するのです。 17私の言おうとすることはこうです。つまり、信仰によって救うという神の約束――神様はそれを文書にし、署名されました――は、その後四百三十年たって、神が「十戒」という律法をお与えになった時にも、無効とされたり、変更されたりはしなかったということです。 18もし律法による救いが可能であれば、それは明らかに、アブラハムが恵みを受けた方法とは別ものになります。アブラハムは、ただ神の約束を信じただけなのですから。
19では、そもそも律法は何のために与えられたのでしょうか。それは、神の約束につけ加えられたものであり、それに違反することがどんなに罪深いことかを人々に示すためです。ただし、この律法の有効期間は、その約束の指し示す「子」、すなわち、キリストが来られる時まででした。さらに次のような点も指摘できます。神様は律法を、天使たちを通してモーセにお与えになり、モーセがそれを民に告げ知らせたのです。 20しかしアブラハムは、天使やモーセのような仲介者を通してではなく、神から直接約束を与えられたのです。 21だとすると、神の律法と約束とは、互いに対立するのでしょうか。そんなことはありません。もし私たちが律法によって救われることができたのであれば、それで事はすんだはずです。罪の力から逃れるための、別の道が開かれる必要などなかったのです。 22聖書は、私たちはみな、その罪の力に閉じ込められていると宣告しています。そこから解放されるには、イエス・キリストを信じる信仰による以外にないのです。この罪からの脱出の道は、キリストを信じるすべての人に開かれています。
23キリストが来られるまでは、私たち人間は律法の監督の下にありました。やがて来られる救い主を信じることができるようになるまで、いわば、律法の保護と監視を受けていたのです。 24言い換えると律法は、キリストが来られ、私たちが信仰によって神の前での正しい身分を与えられるまでの間の、私たちの教育係だったのです。
25しかし、キリストが来られたので、もう、私たちを監督し、キリストに導く教育係は不要です。 26私たちはみな、すでに、イエス・キリストを信じる信仰によって神の子どもとなったからです。 27バプテスマ（洗礼）を受けてキリストと一体とされた今は、キリストをその身にまとっているのです。 28もはや、ユダヤ人とギリシヤ人、奴隷と自由人、男と女という区別はありません。みな、キリスト・イエスにあって一つなのです。 29そして、キリストのものとなった今、私たちはほんとうの意味でアブラハムの子孫であり、アブラハムに与えられた神の約束を相続したのです。
