Rebuilding the Altar
1When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, the people assembled together as one in Jerusalem. 2Then Joshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. 3Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord, both the morning and evening sacrifices. 4Then in accordance with what is written, they celebrated the Festival of Tabernacles with the required number of burnt offerings prescribed for each day. 5After that, they presented the regular burnt offerings, the New Moon sacrifices and the sacrifices for all the appointed sacred festivals of the Lord, as well as those brought as freewill offerings to the Lord. 6On the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, though the foundation of the Lord’s temple had not yet been laid.
Rebuilding the Temple
7Then they gave money to the masons and carpenters, and gave food and drink and olive oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre, so that they would bring cedar logs by sea from Lebanon to Joppa, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.
8In the second month of the second year after their arrival at the house of God in Jerusalem, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak and the rest of the people (the priests and the Levites and all who had returned from the captivity to Jerusalem) began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years old and older to supervise the building of the house of the Lord. 9Joshua and his sons and brothers and Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Hodaviah3:9 Hebrew Yehudah, a variant of Hodaviah) and the sons of Henadad and their sons and brothers—all Levites—joined together in supervising those working on the house of God.
10When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments and with trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of Asaph) with cymbals, took their places to praise the Lord, as prescribed by David king of Israel. 11With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord:
“He is good;
his love toward Israel endures forever.”
And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy. 13No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people made so much noise. And the sound was heard far away.
بازسازی قربانگاه
1در ماه هفتم سال، تمام كسانی كه به سرزمين يهودا بازگشته بودند از شهرهای خود آمده در اورشليم جمع شدند. 2آنگاه يهوشع كاهن پسر يهوصادق و ساير كاهنان، و زروبابل پسر شئلتیئيل و خاندان او قربانگاه خدای اسرائيل را دوباره بنا كردند. سپس همانطور كه در كتاب تورات موسی، مرد خدا، دستور داده شده بود، قربانیهای سوختنی تقديم نمودند. 3گرچه يهوديانی كه به سرزمين خود بازگشته بودند از مردمی كه در آن سرزمين بودند می‌ترسيدند، با اين حال قربانگاه را در جای سابق خود بنا كردند و روی آن، قربانیهای سوختنی صبح و عصر را به خداوند تقديم نمودند. 4آنها عيد خيمه‌ها را همانطور كه در كتاب تورات موسی نوشته شده بود، برگزار كردند و در طول روزهای عيد، قربانیهایی را كه برای هر روز تعيين شده بود، تقديم نمودند. 5از آن پس، آنها به طور مرتب قربانیهای سوختنی روزانه، قربانیهای مخصوص جشن ماه نو و جشنهای ساليانهٔ خداوند را تقديم می‌كردند. علاوه بر اين قربانیها، هدايای داوطلبانه هم به خداوند تقديم می‌شد. 6روز اول ماه هفتم، حتی قبل از گذاشتن پايه‌های خانهٔ خداوند، كاهنان شروع به تقديم قربانیهای سوختنی برای خداوند كردند.
بازسازی خانه خدا
7سپس برای بازسازی خانهٔ خدا عده‌ای بنا و نجار استخدام كردند و به اهالی صور و صيدون مواد غذايی، شراب و روغن زيتون دادند و از آنها چوب سرو گرفتند. اين چوبها از لبنان، از طريق دريا، به يافا حمل می‌شد. تمام اينها با اجازهٔ کوروش، پادشاه پارس، انجام می‌گرفت.
8در ماه دوم از سال دوم ورود يهوديان به اورشليم، زروبابل، يهوشع، كاهنان، لاويان و تمام كسانی كه به سرزمين يهودا بازگشته بودند كار بازسازی خانهٔ خدا را شروع كردند. لاويانی كه بيست سال يا بيشتر سن داشتند، تعيين شدند تا بر اين كار نظارت كنند. 9نظارت بر كار كارگران به عهده يشوع و پسران و برادرانش و قدمی‌ئيل و پسرانش (از نسل هودويا) گذاشته شد. (لاويان طايفه حيناداد نيز در اين كار به ايشان كمک می‌كردند.)
10وقتی پايه‌های خانه خداوند گذاشته شد، كاهنان لباس مخصوص خود را پوشيدند و شيپورها را نواختند و لاويان طايفهٔ آساف سنجهای خود را به صدا درآوردند تا مطابق رسم داوود پادشاه، خداوند را ستايش كنند. 11ايشان با اين كلمات در وصف خداوند می‌سراييدند: «خداوند نيكوست و محبتش برای اسرائيل بی‌پايان!» سپس برای پايه‌گذاری خانهٔ خداوند، تمام قوم با صدای بلند، خدا را شكر كردند. 12اما بسياری از كاهنان و لاويان و سران قوم كه پير بودند و خانه‌ای را كه سليمان برای خداوند ساخته بود ديده بودند، وقتی پايه‌های خانهٔ خداوند را كه گذاشته می‌شد ديدند، با صدای بلند گريستند، در حالی که ديگران از شادی فرياد برمی‌آوردند. 13كسی نمی‌توانست صدای گريه را از فرياد شادی تشخيص دهد، زيرا اين صداها چنان بلند بود كه از فاصله دور نيز به گوش می‌رسيد.
