Cyrus Helps the Exiles to Return
1In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing:
2“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says:
“ ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. 3Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem, and may their God be with them. 4And in any locality where survivors may now be living, the people are to provide them with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with freewill offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem.’ ”
5Then the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and Levites—everyone whose heart God had moved—prepared to go up and build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem. 6All their neighbors assisted them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with valuable gifts, in addition to all the freewill offerings.
7Moreover, King Cyrus brought out the articles belonging to the temple of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and had placed in the temple of his god.1:7 Or gods 8Cyrus king of Persia had them brought by Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah.
9This was the inventory:
11In all, there were 5,400 articles of gold and of silver. Sheshbazzar brought all these along with the exiles when they came up from Babylon to Jerusalem.

1ペルシヤ王クロスの治世の元年に、主はエレミヤの預言を実現するために、クロス王の心を動かし、彼によって帝国中に公文書をもって次のようなおふれを出させました。
2「ペルシヤ王クロスはここに布告する。広大な領土を私にお与えくださった天の神は、今、私にユダのエルサレムに神殿を建てよとお告げになった。 3わが帝国にいるユダヤ人は直ちにエルサレムへ帰り、イスラエルとエルサレムの神、主の神殿を建てるがよい。あなたがたの上に主の祝福があるように。 4帰還しない者は帰還する者の費用を負担し、衣服、旅費、旅じたくの費用を援助するようにせよ。そして、神殿建築のためにも、進んでささげ物をささげよ。」
5こうして、ユダ族とベニヤミン族の指導者たち、祭司やレビ人たちは、神に心を駆り立てられ、神殿の再建を目指して、すぐにエルサレムへの帰途につきました。 6ペルシヤに残ることにした人々はみな、帰る者への援助を惜しまず、彼らに神殿へのささげ物を託しました。
7クロス王自身も、ネブカデネザルがエルサレムの神殿から持って来て自国の神殿に納めていた金の鉢や高価な祭具類を寄贈しました。 8彼は宝物係ミテレダテにそれらを確認させたのち、引き揚げ団の指導者シェシュバツァル（ゼルバベル）の手に渡しました。
9-10その目録は次のとおりです。金の皿三十枚、銀の皿千枚、香炉二十九点、金の鉢三十個、種々のデザインの銀の鉢四百十個、その他の用具一千点。 11それらを含め全部で五千四百点の金銀の用具が、シェシュバツァルの手でエルサレムに持ち帰られることになりました。
