Water From the Rock
1The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”
Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”
3But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
4Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
5The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7And he called the place Massah17:7 Massah means testing. and Meribah17:7 Meribah means quarreling. because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Amalekites Defeated
8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”
10So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
14Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.”
15Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16He said, “Because hands were lifted up against17:16 Or to the throne of the Lord,17:16 The meaning of the Hebrew for this clause is uncertain. the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”

岩からの水
1さて、主の命令に従って、イスラエルの民はシンの荒野をあとにし、レフィディムへ旅を続けました。ところが着いてみると、また水がありません。 2再び、彼らの不満が爆発しました。「水はどこだ？ 水をくれーっ！」彼らは騒ぎたてます。モーセは、「静かに！ いいかげんにしなさい。いったいどこまで主が忍耐してくださると思っているのだ」と、彼らをしかりました。 3しかし、のどの渇きに苦しむ彼らに効果はありません。「何だと？ おまえこそ、なぜわれわれをエジプトから連れ出したんだ！ 子どもたちや家畜もいっしょにこんな所まで連れて来て、あげくの果てに死なせようなんて、あんまりではないか。」
4モーセは主に願いました。「どうしたらよいのでしょう。この人たちは、今にも私に石を投げつけて殺しかねない有様です。」
5-6主はモーセに言いました。「長老たちを連れ、あなたが先頭に立ってホレブ山（シナイ山）まで人々を導きなさい。わたしはその岩の上であなたに会う。岩をあなたの杖、ナイル川を打ったあの杖で打ちなさい。すると水があふれ出て、みなに十分行き渡るだろう。」モーセが言われたとおりにすると、水が吹き出しました。 7モーセはその場所を、マサ〔「主を試みる」の意〕、また、メリバ〔「議論」あるいは「争い」の意〕と名づけました。この場所で人々が、「主はわれわれを助けてくれるのか、どうなのか」と言い争い、主が自分たちを生かすかどうか試みたからです。
アマレクとの戦い
8さて、アマレクの戦士たちがイスラエル人に戦いを挑もうと、レフィディムへやって来ました。 9モーセはヨシュアに、アマレク軍と戦うために人々を召集するよう命じました。そして、「私は明日、神の杖を持って丘の頂に立つ」と言いました。
10ヨシュアとその部下はアマレク軍と戦うために出て行き、一方、モーセとアロンとフルは丘に登りました。 11モーセが手に持った杖を差し伸べている間は、イスラエル軍が優勢に立ちましたが、腕を下げるとアマレク軍が優勢になりました。 12モーセの腕はしびれて、とうとう棒のようになってしまいました。もうこれ以上、杖を持っていることができません。アロンとフルは、石を転がして来てモーセを座らせ、両側に立って、日が暮れるまで二人がかりで彼の腕を支え続けました。 13こうして、ヨシュアの率いるイスラエル軍は、アマレク軍をみごとに打ち破ったのです。
14主はモーセに言いました。「このことを書き記して永遠に残る記録としなさい。いつまでも忘れないようにするのだ。またヨシュアに、アマレク人はわたしが完全に滅ぼし、記憶にさえ残らないようにする、と伝えなさい。」
15-16モーセは祭壇を築き、それをアドナイ・ニシ〔「主は私の旗」の意〕と呼びました。モーセは言いました。「主の旗を掲げなさい。こののち何代にもわたって、主がアマレク人と戦ってくださる。」
