Exodus 12:1-51

The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread

1The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2“This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb12:3 The Hebrew word can mean lamb or kid; also in verse 4. for his family, one for each household. 4If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs. 10Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.

12“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

14“This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance. 15For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel. 16On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.

17“Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. 18In the first month you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel. 20Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread.”

21Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. 22Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning. 23When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.

24“Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’ ” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. 28The Israelites did just what the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron.

29At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. 30Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.

The Exodus

31During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. 32Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.”

33The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. “For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!” 34So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. 35The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. 36The Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.

37The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children. 38Many other people went up with them, and also large droves of livestock, both flocks and herds. 39With the dough the Israelites had brought from Egypt, they baked loaves of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.

40Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt12:40 Masoretic Text; Samaritan Pentateuch and Septuagint Egypt and Canaan was 430 years. 41At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt. 42Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for the generations to come.

Passover Restrictions

43The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the regulations for the Passover meal:

“No foreigner may eat it. 44Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him, 45but a temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it.

46“It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones. 47The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.

48“A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lord’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it. 49The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.”

50All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. 51And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions.

1さて、主はモーセとアロンに言いました。 2「これから今月をユダヤの一月(太陽暦の三月中旬から四月中旬)とし、一年で最も重要な月とする。 3-4イスラエル人全員にこう布告しなさい。毎年この月の十日に、家族ごとに子羊を一頭用意しなければならない。家族が少人数で食べきれないときは、近所の少人数の家族と分け合ってもよい。家族の人数によってどうするか決めなさい。 5用意するのは、羊かやぎの傷のない一歳の雄でなければならない。

6まず、この月の十四日の夕方に子羊をほふる。 7次に、その血を家の戸口の二本の門柱とかもい(門扉の上の横木)に塗る。血は、その家で食べる子羊のものを使うこと。 8その夜は家族全員で、丸焼きにした子羊の肉を、種なしパン(イースト菌を入れないで焼くパン)、苦味のある野草といっしょに食べなければならない。 9肉は生で食べたり煮たりするのではなく、必ず焼くこと。頭、足、心臓、肝臓もつけたまま丸焼きにする。 10どの部分も、翌日まで残しておいてはならない。夜のうちに食べきれなかったら焼却しなさい。

11長い旅に備えて旅仕度のまま食べなさい。くつをはき、杖を持ったまま急いで食べなさい。以後これは『主の過越』と呼ばれる。 12今夜わたしがエジプトを通り過ぎ、エジプトの家々の長男と家畜の初子とを殺し、エジプトの神々にさばきを下すからだ。わたしは主である。 13戸口の門柱とかもいに塗った血は、わたしに従うというしるしだ。エジプトの地を打つ時も、血が塗ってある家は過ぎ越そう。その家の子は安全である。

14この夜の重大な出来事を忘れないために、毎年、記念の祭りを祝わなければならない。これは永遠に守るべき変わらない決まりとなる。 15祭りの期間は七日間、その間は種なしパンしか食べてはならない。この規則を破る者は、だれであろうとイスラエルから追放される。 16祭りの一日目と七日目に、全イスラエル人のために聖なる集会を開く。その日は、食事の準備以外はどんな労働もしてはならない。

17この『種なしパンの祭り』を毎年行い、いつもその日を、わたしがあなたがたをエジプトから救い出した日として記念しなさい。子々孫々、この日を例祭としなければならない。 18この月の十四日の夕方から二十一日の夕方まで、パン種を入れないパンしか食べてはならない。 19この七日間、パン種の一かけらも家にあってはならない。その間にパン種の入ったものを食べた者はだれでも、イスラエル人の社会から追放される。同じ規則は、いっしょに住んでいる外国人にも適用される。イスラエルに生まれた者と全く同じである。 20もう一度くり返す。この期間中はパン種を使ったものを食べてはならない。どこにいても、パンは種を入れないものだけを食事に出しなさい。」

21モーセは、イスラエルの長老たち全員を呼び集めて言いました。「さあ、群れの中から子羊を取って来なさい。一家族に一頭、少人数の場合は数家族に一頭ずつだ。そして、神があなたがたを手にかけないで過ぎ越してくださるように、その羊をほふりなさい。 22その血を鉢に入れ、ヒソプの枝を取って血に浸し、かもいと二本の門柱に塗りなさい。夜の間はだれも外に出てはならない。 23神は、エジプト中を巡ってエジプト人を打たれる。けれども、かもいと二本の門柱とに血がついている家は過ぎ越し、死の使いが入って長男を殺さないように守ってくださる。 24これは、あなたがたばかりか、子々孫々に至るまで永遠に守るべきことだということを忘れてはならない。 25約束の地に入ったら、この過越の祭りをして祝いなさい。 26その時、子どもたちが、『なぜこの祭りをするのですか』と尋ねたら、 27こう答えなさい。『神様が私たちを過ぎ越してくださったことを記念する祭りだよ。エジプト人は殺されたが、イスラエル人は無事だった。神様は私たちを滅ぼしに家に来なかったのだよ。』」

人々はみなひざまずいて礼拝し、 28それから、モーセとアロンの指示どおりにすべて行いました。

第十の災い 初子の死

29その夜のこと。真夜中ごろ、ファラオの世継ぎから地下牢に入れられている捕虜の子に至るまで、エジプト人の家の長男はすべて、神の手にかかって死にました。家畜の初子も同じです。 30ファラオやその家臣たちをはじめ、エジプト中のすべての人々が夜中に起き出し、国中に悲鳴が響き渡りました。死人の出ない家は一軒もなかったからです。

31ファラオは、その夜のうちに、モーセとアロンを呼びました。「もうたくさんだ。早く出て行ってくれ。一人残らず、今すぐ出て行ってくれ! 主だろうが何だろうが、好きなように礼拝すればいい。 32羊も牛もみんな連れて、早く行ってくれ! そして出かける前に私のためにも祈ってもらいたい。」 33エジプト人は、「このままでは、われわれまで死んでしまう」と言い、できるだけ早く国から出てもらおうと、イスラエル人をせきたてました。

34ぐずぐずできません。イスラエル人はみな、パン種の入っていないパン生地を鉢に入れ、衣類で包んでかつぎました。 35それから、モーセに言われたとおり、エジプト人に金や銀の飾り物と衣服を求めたのです。 36神はイスラエル人がエジプト人に好意を持たれるようにされたので、イスラエル人が欲しい物は何でも、自分の財産をはたいてまで譲ってくれました。

エジプトを出るイスラエル人

37イスラエル人はその夜のうちにラメセスを出発し、スコテに向かいました。女性、子どもを除く男性だけで六十万人いました。 38一行の中には、たくさんの外国人たちも交じっていました。おびただしい数の羊や牛の家畜もいっしょでした。 39食事には、持って来たパン種抜きのパン生地で、パンを焼きました。あまりにあわただしく、パンがふくれるまで待っている暇がなかったからです。

40-41ヤコブの息子たちとその子孫は、結局、エジプトに四百三十年の間滞在したことになります。エジプトを出発したのは、四百三十年目のちょうど最後の日でした。 42この夜は、神がイスラエル人をエジプトから連れ出すために、特に選ばれた夜でした。毎年その日が、神の救いを記念する祭りの日となったのは、そういういきさつがあるのです。

過越の祭りの規定

43主はモーセとアロンに告げました。「過越の祭りについて次のように定める。外国人は過越の子羊を食べてはならない。 44しかし、買い取られた奴隷は、割礼(男子が生まれて八日目にその性器の包皮を切り取る儀式)を受けていれば、食べてかまわない。 45雇い人や外国人寄留者は、食べてはならない。 46子羊を食べる者はみな、家に集まっていっしょに食べなければならない。決して家の外へ持ち出してはならない。また、骨一本も折ってはならない。 47イスラエル人は全員、この記念日を守らなければならない。

48在留外国人で、過越の祭りを共に祝いたいと願う者は、男なら割礼を受けさせなさい。そのうえでなら参加してもよい。その時は、イスラエルに生まれた者と同じに扱いなさい。しかし割礼を受けていない者は、決して子羊を食べてはならない。 49イスラエルに生まれた者にも、在留外国人にも、同じ規定が適用される。」

50イスラエル人は、主がモーセとアロンに命じたことをみな守りました。 51その日、主はエジプトからイスラエル人を救い出したのです。幾つもの集団が続々と国境を越えて行きました。
