The King’s Edict in Behalf of the Jews
1That same day King Xerxes gave Queen Esther the estate of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came into the presence of the king, for Esther had told how he was related to her. 2The king took off his signet ring, which he had reclaimed from Haman, and presented it to Mordecai. And Esther appointed him over Haman’s estate.
3Esther again pleaded with the king, falling at his feet and weeping. She begged him to put an end to the evil plan of Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews. 4Then the king extended the gold scepter to Esther and she arose and stood before him.
5“If it pleases the king,” she said, “and if he regards me with favor and thinks it the right thing to do, and if he is pleased with me, let an order be written overruling the dispatches that Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, devised and wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces. 6For how can I bear to see disaster fall on my people? How can I bear to see the destruction of my family?”
7King Xerxes replied to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Because Haman attacked the Jews, I have given his estate to Esther, and they have impaled him on the pole he set up. 8Now write another decree in the king’s name in behalf of the Jews as seems best to you, and seal it with the king’s signet ring—for no document written in the king’s name and sealed with his ring can be revoked.”
9At once the royal secretaries were summoned—on the twenty-third day of the third month, the month of Sivan. They wrote out all Mordecai’s orders to the Jews, and to the satraps, governors and nobles of the 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush.8:9 That is, the upper Nile region These orders were written in the script of each province and the language of each people and also to the Jews in their own script and language. 10Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes, sealed the dispatches with the king’s signet ring, and sent them by mounted couriers, who rode fast horses especially bred for the king.
11The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate the armed men of any nationality or province who might attack them and their women and children,8:11 Or province, together with their women and children, who might attack them; and to plunder the property of their enemies. 12The day appointed for the Jews to do this in all the provinces of King Xerxes was the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar. 13A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so that the Jews would be ready on that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.
14The couriers, riding the royal horses, went out, spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa.
The Triumph of the Jews
15When Mordecai left the king’s presence, he was wearing royal garments of blue and white, a large crown of gold and a purple robe of fine linen. And the city of Susa held a joyous celebration. 16For the Jews it was a time of happiness and joy, gladness and honor. 17In every province and in every city to which the edict of the king came, there was joy and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebrating. And many people of other nationalities became Jews because fear of the Jews had seized them.
Hinirang ng Hari si Mordecai
1Nang araw ding iyon, ibinigay ni Haring Ahasuerus kay Reyna Ester ang ari-arian ni Haman, ang kalaban ng mga Judio. Sinabi ni Ester sa hari na kamag-anak niya si Mordecai, kaya ipinatawag ito ng hari. 2Kinuha ng hari ang kanyang singsing na pantatak, na binawi niya kay Haman, at ibinigay kay Mordecai. At siya ang ginawang katiwala ni Ester sa lahat ng ari-arian ni Haman.
3Minsan pang lumapit si Ester kay Haring Ahasuerus habang nakaluhod at umiiyak sa kanyang paanan. Hiniling niyang huwag nang ituloy ang masamang plano ni Haman na Agageo laban sa mga Judio. 4-5Itinuro ng hari ang kanyang gintong setro kay Ester, kaya tumayo siya sa harap ng hari at sinabi, “Kung kalugod-lugod po ako sa inyo, Mahal na Hari, at kung para sa inyoʼy tama at matuwid ito, nais ko sanang hilingin sa inyo na gumawa po kayo ng isang kautusan na magpapawalang bisa sa kautusang ipinakalat ni Haman na anak ni Hamedata na Agageo, na patayin ang lahat ng Judio sa inyong kaharian. 6Hindi ko po matitiis na makitang nililipol ang mga kalahi at mga kamag-anak ko.”
7Sinabi ni Haring Ahasuerus kay Ester at kay Mordecai na Judio, “Ipinatuhog ko na si Haman dahil sa masama niyang plano na patayin ang mga Judio. Kaya ibinigay ko na sa iyo, Ester, ang mga ari-arian niya. 8Kaya gumawa kayo ng kautusan sa aking pangalan ng anumang nais ninyong isulat para sa ikabubuti ng mga Judio, at pagkatapos ay tatakan ninyo ng singsing ko. Dahil anumang kasulatan na isinulat sa pangalan ng hari at tinatakan ng singsing niya ay hindi mababago.”
9Kaya noong ika-23 ng ikatlong buwan, ang buwan ng Sivan, ipinatawag ang mga kalihim ng hari. Isinulat nila ang lahat ng idinikta ni Mordecai. Ang sulat ay para sa mga Judio, mga gobernador, mga punong-bayan, at iba pang lingkod ng hari sa 127 lalawigan, mula sa India hanggang sa Etiopia.8:9 Etiopia: sa Hebreo, Cush. Isinulat ito sa bawat wika ng mga tao sa buong kaharian, pati na sa wika ng mga Judio. 10Ipinasulat ni Mordecai sa pangalan ni Haring Ahasuerus at tinatakan ng singsing ng hari. At pagkatapos, ipinadala sa pamamagitan ng mga tagapaghatid ng sulat na nakasakay sa mabibilis na kabayo ng hari. 11Ayon sa sulat na iyon, binigyan ng pahintulot ang lahat ng Judio na magsama-sama at ipagtanggol ang kanilang sarili, pati na ang kanilang mga babae at mga bata. Maaari nilang patayin ang sinumang sasalakay sa kanila mula sa kahit anong bansa o probinsya. Pinahintulutan din silang samsamin ang mga ari-arian ng kanilang mga kaaway. 12Gagawin ito ng mga Judio sa lahat ng probinsyang nasasakupan ni Haring Ahasuerus, sa ika-13 araw ng ika-12 buwan, ang buwan ng Adar. 13Ang sulat na itoʼy ipapadala sa lahat ng probinsya bilang isang kautusan at dapat ipaalam sa lahat, para makapaghanda ang mga Judio sa pagtatanggol ng kanilang sarili laban sa mga kaaway nila sa araw na iyon.
14Kaya sa utos ng hari, nagmamadaling umalis ang mga tagapaghatid ng sulat na nakasakay sa mabibilis na kabayo ng hari. Ang utos na iyon ay ipinakalat din sa lungsod ng Susa.
15Nang lumabas si Mordecai sa palasyo, nakadamit siya ng damit panghari na puti at asul at nakabalabal ng pinong linen na kulay ube, at may malaking koronang ginto sa kanyang ulo. Nagsigawan sa tuwa ang mga tao sa lungsod ng Susa. 16Labis ang katuwaan ng lahat ng Judio. 17Sa bawat lungsod o probinsya na naabot ng utos ng hari, tuwang-tuwa ang mga Judio at nagdiwang sila. At marami sa lupaing iyon ang naging Judio dahil sa takot nila sa mga Judio.
