Wisdom
1A good name is better than fine perfume,
and the day of death better than the day of birth.
2It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death is the destiny of everyone;
the living should take this to heart.
3Frustration is better than laughter,
because a sad face is good for the heart.
4The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.
5It is better to heed the rebuke of a wise person
than to listen to the song of fools.
6Like the crackling of thorns under the pot,
so is the laughter of fools.
This too is meaningless.
7Extortion turns a wise person into a fool,
and a bribe corrupts the heart.
8The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience is better than pride.
9Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit,
for anger resides in the lap of fools.
10Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?”
For it is not wise to ask such questions.
11Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing
and benefits those who see the sun.
12Wisdom is a shelter
as money is a shelter,
but the advantage of knowledge is this:
Wisdom preserves those who have it.
13Consider what God has done:
Who can straighten
what he has made crooked?
14When times are good, be happy;
but when times are bad, consider this:
God has made the one
as well as the other.
Therefore, no one can discover
anything about their future.
15In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these:
the righteous perishing in their righteousness,
and the wicked living long in their wickedness.
16Do not be overrighteous,
neither be overwise—
why destroy yourself?
17Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
why die before your time?
18It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
Whoever fears God will avoid all extremes.7:18 Or will follow them both
19Wisdom makes one wise person more powerful
than ten rulers in a city.
20Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous,
no one who does what is right and never sins.
21Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you may hear your servant cursing you—
22for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.
23All this I tested by wisdom and I said,
“I am determined to be wise”—
but this was beyond me.
24Whatever exists is far off and most profound—
who can discover it?
25So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
and the madness of folly.
26I find more bitter than death
the woman who is a snare,
whose heart is a trap
and whose hands are chains.
The man who pleases God will escape her,
but the sinner she will ensnare.
27“Look,” says the Teacher,7:27 Or the leader of the assembly “this is what I have discovered:
“Adding one thing to another to discover the scheme of things—
28while I was still searching
but not finding—
I found one upright man among a thousand,
but not one upright woman among them all.
29This only have I found:
God created mankind upright,
but they have gone in search of many schemes.”
Adevăratele valori
1Mai mult prețuiește un nume bun decât uleiul bun
și ziua morții decât ziua nașterii.
2Mai bine să mergi într‑o casă a bocetului,
decât să mergi într‑o casă a ospățului,
căci acesta este sfârșitul oricărui om,
și cine trăiește, își pune la inimă lucrul acesta.
3Mai bună este tristețea decât râsul,
căci, prin întristarea feței, inima se face mai bună.
4Inima înțelepților este în casa bocetului,
dar inima nesăbuiților este în casa petrecerii.
5Mai bine să asculți mustrarea înțeleptului,
decât să auzi cântecul nesăbuiților.
6Căci precum trosnetul spinilor sub oală,
așa este și râsul nesăbuitului!
Și aceasta este o deșertăciune!
7Cu siguranță asuprirea îl înnebunește pe înțelept,
iar mita corupe inima.
8Mai bun este sfârșitul unui lucru decât începutul lui
și mai bună este răbdarea decât mândria.
9Nu te grăbi să te mânii în duhul tău,
căci mânia locuiește în sânul nesăbuiților!
10Să nu zici: „De ce au fost zilele dintâi mai bune decât acestea?“,
căci nu din înțelepciune întrebi astfel!
11Este bună înțelepciunea, așa cum și moștenirea este bună
și de folos celor ce văd soarele.
12Căci înțelepciunea este un adăpost12 Lit.: [este] într‑o umbră (și în versul următor).,
așa cum și argintul este un adăpost,
iar câștigul cunoașterii înțelepciunii
este că își ține în viață stăpânii.
13Caută să înțelegi lucrarea lui Dumnezeu:
cine poate îndrepta ceea ce El a îndoit?
14În ziua cea bună, fii fericit!
În ziua cea rea, cugetă:
Dumnezeu a făcut‑o și pe una și pe cealaltă,
astfel încât omul să nu poată afla nimic despre ce va fi după el.
15Am văzut tot felul de lucruri în timpul vieții mele deșarte:
un om drept pierind în dreptatea lui,
iar altul nedrept continuându‑și viața în nedreptatea lui.
16Nu fi prea drept
și nu te arăta nici prea înțelept!
De ce să te distrugi singur?
17Însă nu fi nici foarte rău
și nu fi nici nesăbuit!
De ce să mori înainte de vreme?
18Este bine să apuci acest sfat,
iar pe celălalt să nu‑l lași din mână,
căci cine se teme de Dumnezeu va ieși cu bine din toate acestea.
19Înțelepciunea dă mai multă tărie înțeleptului,
decât ar da zece conducători destoinici unei cetăți.19 Sau: Înțelepciunea îl face pe cel înțelept mai tare / decât zece conducători destoinici dintr‑o cetate.
20Fiindcă nu există pe pământ niciun om drept
care să facă numai binele și să nu păcătuiască niciodată.
21În plus, nu lua aminte la toate cuvintele care se spun,
ca nu cumva să‑l auzi pe slujitorul tău blestemându‑te!
22Tu știi în inima ta că, de mai multe ori,
chiar tu însuți i‑ai blestemat pe alții.
23Toate acestea le‑am cercetat cu înțelepciune și mi‑am zis:
„Mă voi înțelepți“;
dar înțelepciunea s‑a îndepărtat de mine.
24Orice ar fi ea,24 Sau: Orice s‑a întâmplat. este departe
și adâncă, da, adâncă!
Cine o va găsi?!
25Mi‑am îndreptat inima să cunosc,
să cercetez și să caut înțelepciunea și sensul lucrurilor
și să înțeleg stupiditatea răutății25 Sau: și să înțeleg că răutatea este stupiditate
și nebunia nesăbuinței.
26Și am descoperit că mai amară decât moartea,
este femeia care este o capcană,
a cărei inimă este un laț
și ale cărei mâini sunt niște lanțuri.
Cel plăcut înaintea lui Dumnezeu scapă de ea,
dar cel păcătos este prins de ea.
27Privește! Am descoperit aceasta, zice oratorul,
când cercetam lucrurile unul câte unul,
ca să le găsesc sensul
28pe care sufletul meu îl tot căuta,
dar nu‑l găsea:
dintr‑o mie, am găsit un bărbat drept,
însă n‑am găsit o femeie dreaptă între toți aceștia.
29Privește! Am descoperit un singur lucru:
că Dumnezeu l‑a făcut pe om drept,
dar ei umblă cu multe șiretlicuri.
