Clean and Unclean Food
1You are the children of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead, 2for you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.
3Do not eat any detestable thing. 4These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep.14:5 The precise identification of some of the birds and animals in this chapter is uncertain. 6You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud. 7However, of those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the hyrax. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you. 8The pig is also unclean; although it has a divided hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses.
9Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales. 10But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean.
11You may eat any clean bird. 12But these you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, 13the red kite, the black kite, any kind of falcon, 14any kind of raven, 15the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 16the little owl, the great owl, the white owl, 17the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant, 18the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.
19All flying insects are unclean to you; do not eat them. 20But any winged creature that is clean you may eat.
21Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to the foreigner residing in any of your towns, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to any other foreigner. But you are a people holy to the Lord your God.
Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
Tithes
22Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. 24But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. 27And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.
28At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, 29so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
Alimentos puros e impuros
14:3-20 – Lv 11:1-23
1Eres hijo del Señor tu Dios. No te hagas cortes en la piel ni te rapes la cabeza en honor de un muerto, 2porque eres pueblo consagrado al Señor tu Dios. Él te eligió de entre todos los pueblos de la tierra para que fueras su propiedad exclusiva.
3No comas nada que sea abominable. 4Los animales que podrás comer son los siguientes: el buey, la oveja, la cabra, 5el ciervo, la gacela, el venado, la cabra montés, el íbice, el antílope y el carnero montés.14:5 La identificación de algunas aves y animales de este capítulo no ha podido establecerse con precisión. 6Podrás comer cualquier animal rumiante que tenga la pezuña hendida y partida en dos; 7pero no podrás comer camello, liebre ni tejón porque, aunque rumian, no tienen la pezuña partida. Los tendrás por animales impuros.
8El cerdo es también impuro porque, aunque tiene la pezuña partida, no es rumiante. No podrás comer su carne ni tocar su cadáver.
9De todos los animales que viven en el agua podrás comer los que tienen aletas y escamas, 10pero no podrás comer los que no tienen aletas ni escamas, sino que los tendrás por animales impuros.
11Podrás comer cualquier ave que sea pura, 12pero no podrás comer águila, quebrantahuesos, buitre negro, 13gallinazo, ni especie alguna de milanos ni de halcones, 14ni especie alguna de cuervos, 15ni avestruz, lechuza o gaviota, ninguna clase de gavilán, 16ni búho, ibis, lechuza nocturna, 17búho del desierto, águila pescadora, cormorán 18o cigüeña, ni especie alguna de garzas, ni abubilla ni murciélago.
19A los insectos voladores los tendrás por impuros, así que no los comas. 20Pero sí podrás comer cualquier animal alado que sea puro.
21No comas nada que encuentres ya muerto. Podrás dárselo al extranjero que viva en cualquiera de tus ciudades; él sí podrá comérselo o vendérselo a un forastero. Pero tú eres un pueblo consagrado al Señor tu Dios.
No cocines el cabrito en la leche de su madre.14:21 La última prohibición posiblemente alude a alguna práctica supersticiosa de los cananeos.
Los diezmos
22Cada año, sin falta, apartarás la décima parte de todo lo que produzcan tus campos. 23En la presencia del Señor tu Dios comerás la décima parte de tu trigo, tu vino nuevo y tu aceite, y de los primogénitos de tus vacas y ovejas; lo harás en el lugar que él escoja como residencia de su Nombre. Así aprenderás a temer siempre al Señor tu Dios. 24Pero si el Señor tu Dios te ha bendecido y el lugar donde ha puesto su Nombre está demasiado distante, de modo que no puedes transportar tu diezmo hasta allá, 25entonces lo venderás y te presentarás con el dinero en el lugar que el Señor tu Dios haya elegido. 26Con ese dinero podrás comprar lo que prefieras o más te guste: vacas, ovejas, vino u otra bebida fermentada, y allí, en presencia del Señor tu Dios, tú y tu familia comerán y se regocijarán. 27Pero no abandones a los levitas que vivan en tus ciudades. Recuerda que, a diferencia de ti, ellos no tienen patrimonio alguno.
28Cada tres años reunirás los diezmos de todos tus productos de ese año y los almacenarás en tus ciudades. 29Así los levitas que no tienen patrimonio alguno, los extranjeros, los huérfanos y las viudas que viven en tus ciudades podrán comer y quedar satisfechos. Entonces el Señor tu Dios bendecirá todo el trabajo de tus manos.
