Daniel’s Dream of Four Beasts
1In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying in bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream.
2Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. 3Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.
4“The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it.
5“And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh!’
6“After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.
7“After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.
8“While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being and a mouth that spoke boastfully.
9“As I looked,
“thrones were set in place,
and the Ancient of Days took his seat.
His clothing was as white as snow;
the hair of his head was white like wool.
His throne was flaming with fire,
and its wheels were all ablaze.
10A river of fire was flowing,
coming out from before him.
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
and the books were opened.
11“Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. 12(The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)
13“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,7:13 The Aramaic phrase bar enash means human being. The phrase son of man is retained here because of its use in the New Testament as a title of Jesus, probably based largely on this verse. coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
The Interpretation of the Dream
15“I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. 16I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.
“So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: 17‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. 18But the holy people of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’
19“Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully. 21As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them, 22until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.
23“He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.7:25 Or for a year, two years and half a year
26“ ‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever. 27Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.’
28“This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.”
Viziunea celor patru fiare
1În primul an1 Anul 553 î.Cr. al lui Belșațar, împăratul Babilonului, Daniel a avut un vis și viziuni în minte, pe când era în patul lui. După aceea, el a scris visul. Începând istorisirea cuvintelor, 2Daniel a spus astfel:
„În timpul viziunii mele de noapte, m‑am uitat și iată că cele patru vânturi ale cerului au izbucnit pe marea cea mare2 Sau: pe o mare întinsă; probabil simbolizând lumea, umanitatea; vezi v. 17.. 3Și patru fiare mari, diferite una de cealaltă, au ieșit din mare.
4Prima semăna cu un leu și avea aripi de vultur.4 Imperiul Babilonian. M‑am uitat până când i‑au fost smulse aripile, a fost ridicată de la pământ, a stat în picioare ca un om și i s‑a dat o inimă de om.
5Și iată că o altă fiară, a doua, era ca un urs. Ea stătea culcată pe o parte, ținând trei coaste în gură, între colți.5 Imperiul Medo-Persan. Cele trei coaste reprezintă, probabil, cele trei principale cuceriri: Lidia, Babilon și Egipt. Și i s‑a zis astfel: «Ridică‑te și mănâncă multă carne!»
6După aceea m‑am uitat și iată că mai era o alta, ca un leopard. Fiara aceasta avea pe spate patru aripi ca de pasăre și patru capete; și i s‑a dat stăpânire.6 Imperiul Grec sub Alexandru Macedon; leopardul simbolizează, probabil, rapiditatea cu care avea să se extindă acest imperiu; cele patru capete corespund divizării în patru a imperiului, după moartea lui Alexandru.
7După aceea, în timpul viziunilor mele de noapte, m‑am uitat și iată că era o a patra fiară, înfricoșătoare, înspăimântătoare și nespus de puternică. Avea două rânduri mari de dinți de fier, devora, sfărâma și călca resturile în picioare;7 Imperiul Roman, care avea să fie de neînvins, cucerind teritoriile care aparținuseră imperiilor precedente. era diferită de toate fiarele de dinaintea ei și avea zece coarne.
8Mă uitam cu atenție la coarne și iată că a apărut între ele un alt corn, mai mic, iar trei dintre primele coarne au fost dezrădăcinate dinaintea lui. Acest corn avea niște ochi ca ochii de om și o gură care vorbea cu trufie. 9M‑am uitat până când
niște tronuri au fost așezate
și un Îmbătrânit de Zile a luat loc.
Haina Lui era albă ca zăpada,
iar părul capului Său era ca lâna curată.
Tronul Lui era flăcări de foc,
iar roțile tronului erau un foc aprins.
10Un râu de foc curgea
ieșind dinaintea Lui.
Mii de mii Îi slujeau
și de zece mii de ori zece mii stăteau înaintea Lui.
S‑a ținut judecata
și niște cărți au fost deschise.
11Am continuat să mă uit din cauza răsunetului cuvintelor trufașe pe care cornul acela le rostea. M‑am uitat până când fiara a fost ucisă și trupul ei a fost distrus și aruncat în foc, ca să fie ars. 12Celorlalte fiare li s‑a luat stăpânirea, dar li s‑a îngăduit o prelungire a vieții până la o vreme și un timp anume.
13M‑am uitat în timpul viziunilor mele de noapte
și iată, cu norii cerului
venea Cineva Care era ca un fiu al omului13 Vezi Apoc. 1:13. În Noul Testament, expresia Fiul Omului a fost preferată de Isus pentru a face referire la Sine Însuși. Vezi, de ex., Mt. 16:13; 26:63-64..
El S‑a apropiat de Cel Îmbătrânit de Zile
și a fost adus înaintea Acestuia.
14Lui I s‑a dat stăpânirea, onoarea și Împărăția,
ca să‑I slujească14 Sau: pentru a I se închina. toate popoarele, neamurile și oamenii de orice limbă!
Stăpânirea Lui este o stăpânire veșnică și care nu va trece,
iar Împărăția Lui nu va fi distrusă!
Interpretarea viziunii
15Eu, Daniel, m‑am tulburat în duhul meu, și viziunile din mintea mea m‑au înspăimântat. 16M‑am apropiat de unul dintre cei ce stăteau în preajmă și i‑am cerut adevărul cu privire la toate acestea.
El mi‑a vorbit și mi‑a făcut cunoscută interpretarea acestor lucruri: 17«Aceste patru fiare mari sunt patru împărați17 Sau: împărății. care se vor ridica pe pământ. 18Dar sfinții Celui Preaînalt vor primi Împărăția și o vor stăpâni pe vecie, pentru veci de veci.»
19Apoi am dorit să mă lămuresc cu privire la fiara a patra, care era diferită de toate celelalte și nespus de înfricoșătoare; avea colți de fier și gheare de bronz, devora, sfărâma și călca resturile în picioare. 20Am dorit să mă lămuresc și cu privire la cele zece coarne de pe capul ei, precum și cu privire la celălalt corn care ieșise și dinaintea căruia căzuseră trei, acel corn care avea ochi, o gură care vorbea cu trufie și o înfățișare mai impunătoare decât a celorlalte. 21M‑am uitat iarăși și am văzut cum cornul acela a făcut război cu sfinții și a putut să‑i învingă, 22până când a venit Cel Îmbătrânit de Zile și a făcut dreptate sfinților Celui Preaînalt și până când a sosit vremea când sfinții au luat în stăpânire Împărăția.
23Iată ce mi‑a zis: «Fiara a patra este o a patra împărăție care va fi pe pământ. Ea va fi diferită de toate celelalte împărății; va devora tot pământul, îl va călca în picioare și‑l va sfărâma. 24Iar cele zece coarne sunt zece împărați care se vor ridica din împărăția aceasta. După ei se va ridica un altul, dar el va fi diferit de predecesorii săi și îi va umili pe trei împărați. 25El va rosti cuvinte împotriva Celui Preaînalt și îi va asupri pe sfinții Celui Preaînalt. Se va gândi să schimbe vremurile hotărâte prin lege25 Lit.: vremurile și legea; sau sărbătorile hotărâte prin lege., iar sfinții vor fi dați în mâna lui o vreme, vremuri și o jumătate de vreme.25 În general, expresia este interpretată ca reprezentând 3 ani și jumătate. 26Dar va fi o judecată26 Sau: Dar curtea (de judecată) va delibera; lit.: Dar judecata va ședea; vezi v. 10. și i se va lua stăpânirea, ca să fie distrusă și nimicită pentru totdeauna. 27Apoi domnia, stăpânirea și măreția împărățiilor care sunt pretutindeni sub ceruri vor fi date poporului sfinților Celui Preaînalt.27 Sau: sfinților, poporul Celui Preaînalt. Împărăția Lui este o împărăție veșnică și toate stăpânirile Îi vor sluji27 Sau: I se vor închina. și Îl vor asculta.»
28Aici s‑au încheiat cuvintele. Pe mine, Daniel, m‑au înspăimântat foarte tare gândurile mele și mi s‑a schimbat culoarea feței, dar am păstrat cuvintele în inima mea.28 Cu acest verset se încheie textul în limba aramaică al cărții Daniel.
