The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues2:4 Or languages; also in verse 11 as the Spirit enabled them.
5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,2:9 That is, the Roman province by that name 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17“ ‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’2:21 Joel 2:28-32
22“Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,2:23 Or of those not having the law (that is, Gentiles) put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25David said about him:
“ ‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.
28You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’2:28 Psalm 16:8-11 (see Septuagint)
29“Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
35until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.” ’2:35 Psalm 110:1
36“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
The Fellowship of the Believers
42They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

約束の聖霊が下る
1さて、イエスの死と復活から、七週間が過ぎました。五旬節（ユダヤ教の祭りの一つ）の日のことです。信者たちが一堂に集まっていると、 2突然、天からものすごい音がしました。まるで、激しい風が吹きつけるような音です。それが、家全体にごうごうと響き渡ったのです。 3そして、めらめら燃える炎の舌のようなものが現れ、みなの頭上にとどまりました。 4するとどうでしょう。その場にいた人たちは、みな聖霊に満たされ、知りもしない外国語で話し始めたではありませんか。聖霊が、それだけの力を与えてくださったのです。
5その日エルサレムには、たくさんの敬虔なユダヤ人が、祭りのために、世界のあちこちから集まっていました。 6この大音響に、人々はいったい何事かと駆けつけましたが、弟子たちの話していることばを聞いて、すっかり面食らってしまいました。まぎれもなく自分たちの国のことばだったからです。
7人々には、さっぱり訳がわかりません。ただ口々に、こう言い合うばかりでした。「こんなことってあるだろうか。みんなガリラヤ出身の人だというのに、 8私たちの国のことばですらすら話している。 9ここには、パルテヤ人、メジヤ人、エラム人、またメソポタミヤ、ユダヤ、カパドキヤ、ポント、アジヤ、 10フルギヤ、パンフリヤ、エジプト、それにリビヤのクレネ語が使われている地方などから来た人たちがいるし、ほかにも、ローマからの旅行者で、もともとのユダヤ人もいれば、ユダヤ教への改宗者もいる。 11それに、クレテ人やアラビヤ人もいる。それがどうだ。それぞれの出身地のことばで、神のすばらしい奇跡の話を聞くとは……。」
12人々はただ呆然として、「いったい、どうなっているのだ」と顔を見合わせました。
13しかし中には、「何、彼らは酔っぱらっているだけさ」と、あざける者たちもいました。
14するとペテロが、十一人の使徒と共につかつかと進み出て、声を張り上げ、人々に語りかけました。「よそから来られた方も、エルサレムに住んでおられる皆さんも、どうぞお聞きください。 15皆さんの中には、私たちが酒に酔っているのだとおっしゃる方もいますが、そんなことはありません。酒に酔うには時間が早すぎます。朝の九時から酒を飲む人はいないでしょう。 16いま見ていることは、何世紀も前に、まさに預言者ヨエルが預言したことなのです。
17『神は言われる。
終わりの日に、
わたしはすべての人にわたしの霊を注ぐ。
その時、あなたがたの息子、娘は預言し、
青年は幻を見、
老人は夢を見る。
18聖霊は、男女を問わず、わたしに仕える者たちに
注がれる。
すると、彼らは預言をする。
19また、わたしは天と地に不思議なしるしを現す。
血と火と煙の雲だ。
20主の恐るべき日が来る前に、
太陽は暗くなり、月は血のように赤くなる。
21しかし、主にあわれみを求める者はみな、
あわれみを受けて救われる。』（ヨエル2・28-32）
22ああ、皆さん。これから申し上げることを聞いてください。よくご存じのように、ナザレのイエスは、あなたがたの前で、力ある奇跡を行われました。神様はそれによって、だれにもはっきりわかるように、イエス様の身元を保証なさったのです。 23神様はあらかじめ計画したとおり、この方を、あなたがたの手でローマ政府に引き渡し、十字架で処刑することをお許しになりました。 24そうした上で、この方を死の苦しみから解放し、復活させたのです。この方が、ずっと死んだままでいることなど、ありえないことだからです。
25ダビデ王は、イエス様のことをこう言っています。
『主はいつも私と共におられる。
主が私を助け、
神の大きな力が私を支える。
26だから、心は喜びにあふれ、
私の舌は主をほめたたえる。
たとい死んでも、私には望みがある。
27あなたは、私のたましいを地獄に放置せず、
あなたの聖なる息子の体を、
朽ち果てさせることもない。
28私を生き返らせ、
あなたの前で、すばらしい喜びにあふれさせる。』（詩篇16・8-11）
29愛する皆さん。考えてください。ダビデはここで、自分のことを語っているわけではありません。そうでしょう。ダビデは死んで葬られ、その墓は今でも、ちゃんと残っているではありませんか。 30しかし、彼は預言者でしたから、自分の子孫の一人がメシヤ（ヘブル語で、救い主）となり、ダビデの王座につくと神が誓われたことを知っていたのです。 31それで、遠い将来を望み見ながら、メシヤの復活を預言しました。メシヤのたましいは地獄に放置されず、その体が朽ち果てることもない、と語ったのです。 32そのとおり、神様はイエスを復活させました。私たちはみな、そのことの証人です。
33いまイエス様は、天で最も栄誉ある神の右の座についておられます。そして、約束どおり、父なる神は聖霊を送ってくださいました。その結果、たった今、あなたがたが見聞きしたことが起こったのです。
34-35ダビデは、決して自分のことを言ったのではありません。ダビデは天にのぼったことはないからです。それに、当のダビデがこうも言っています。
『神は私の主に言われた。
「わたしがあなたの敵を
完全に征服するまで、
わたしの右に座っていなさい。」』（詩篇110・1）
36ですから、イスラエルのすべての人に、はっきり言っておきます。神様が主とし、キリスト（ギリシャ語で、救い主）とされたイエスを、あなたがたは十字架につけたのです。」
37ペテロのことばは、人々の心を強く打ちました。「それでは、私たちはどうすればいいのでしょう。」あちらからもこちらからも、使徒たちへの質問の声があがりました。
38ペテロは答えました。「一人一人、罪の生活から悔い改めて神に立ち返りなさい。そして、罪を赦していただくために、イエス・キリストの名によってバプテスマ（洗礼）を受けなさい。そうすれば、聖霊という賜物をいただけます。 39それはキリストが約束してくださったことです。あなたがたは言うまでもなく、あなたがたの子孫、また遠くにいても、私たちの神である主がお招きになったすべての人に与えられるのです。」
40このあとも、ペテロの説教はえんえんと続きました。イエスのことや、悪に満ちたこの時代から救われなければならないことを、ことばを尽くして訴えたのです。 41この日、ペテロの言うことを信じた人はバプテスマを受けましたが、その数は全部で三千人ほどでした。 42彼らは、使徒たちの教えをよく守り、聖餐式（パンと杯によりキリストの体と血の祝福にあずかる、キリスト教の礼典の一つ）や祈り会に加わっていました。
43だれもが心から神を恐れ敬うようになり、また、使徒たちは次々と奇跡を行いました。 44信者たちはみないっしょにいて、それぞれの持ち物を分け合い、 45必要がある人には、財産を売り払って与えました。 46毎日、神殿で礼拝をし、聖餐の時は、少人数に分かれてめいめいの家に集まり、心から喜びと感謝にあふれて食事を共にし、 47心から神を賛美しました。彼らは町中の人に好感をもたれ、神も、救われる人を毎日、仲間に加えてくださいました。
