Paul in Ephesus
1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when19:2 Or after you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
4Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues19:6 Or other languages and prophesied. 7There were about twelve men in all.
8Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. 9But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.
11God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
13Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
17When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.19:19 A drachma was a silver coin worth about a day’s wages. 20In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.
21After all this had happened, Paul decided19:21 Or decided in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.” 22He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer.
The Riot in Ephesus
23About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. 24A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. 25He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business. 26And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all. 27There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
28When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia, and all of them rushed into the theater together. 30Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him. 31Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
32The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. 33The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people. 34But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. 37You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess. 38If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges. 39If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” 41After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
سومين سفر بشارتی پولس
1در همان زمان كه اپلس در يونان در شهر قرنتس بود، پولس نيز در ايالت آسيا سفر می‌كرد تا به افسس رسيد و در آنجا چند نفر مسيحی يافت. 2پولس از ايشان پرسيد: «آيا وقتی به عيسی مسيح ايمان آورديد، روح‌القدس را يافتيد؟»
جواب دادند: «نه، ما حتی نمی‌دانيم روح‌القدس چيست!»
3پولس پرسيد: «پس به چه ايمانی اعتراف كرديد و غسل تعميد گرفتيد؟»
جواب دادند: «به آنچه يحيای پيغمبر تعليم داده است.»
4پولس به ايشان گفت: «تعميدی كه يحيی می‌داد برای اين بود كه مردم از گناه دست كشيده، به سوی خدا بازگردند و به عيسی ايمان بياورند، يعنی به همان كسی كه يحيی وعدهٔ ظهورش را می‌داد.»
5وقتی اين را شنيدند، به نام عيسای خداوند غسل تعميد گرفتند. 6سپس، هنگامی كه پولس دست بر سر آنان گذاشت، روح‌القدس بر ايشان قرار گرفت و به زبانهای مختلف سخن گفتند و نبوت كردند. 7تعداد اين افراد دوازده نفر بود.
خدمات پولس در افسس
8در ضمن، پولس هر شنبه به مدت سه ماه به عبادتگاه يهود می‌رفت و با شجاعت پيغام انجيل را اعلام می‌كرد. او از ايمان و علت ايمان خود سخن می‌گفت و ديگران را نيز متقاعد می‌ساخت تا به عيسی ايمان آورند. 9اما بعضی پيغام او را رد كردند و در برابر همه به مسيح بد می‌گفتند. پس، از ايشان جدا شد و ديگر برای آنان موعظه نكرد. سپس، مسيحيان را از ميان مخالفين بيرون كشيد و برای ايشان جلسات جداگانه‌ای ترتيب داد. در ضمن، هر روز در تالار سخنرانی «طيرانُس» برای مردم موعظه می‌كرد. 10دو سال به اين ترتيب گذشت تا اينكه تمام ساكنان ايالت آسيا پيغام خداوند را شنيدند، هم يهوديان و هم يونانيان. 11خداوند به پولس قدرت داد تا معجزات شگفت‌آوری به انجام رساند، 12به طوری كه هرگاه دستمال يا تكه‌ای از لباس او را روی اشخاص بيمار می‌گذاشتند، شفا می‌يافتند و ارواح ناپاک از وجودشان بيرون می‌رفتند.
13يک بار گروهی از يهوديان دوره‌گرد كه شهر به شهر می‌گشتند و برای اخراج ارواح ناپاک ورد می‌خواندند، خواستند امتحان كنند كه اگر اسم عيسای خداوند را بر زبان آورند، می‌توانند ارواح پليد را از وجود ديوانگان بيرون كنند يا نه. وردی هم كه می‌خواندند اين بود: «ای روح ناپاک، به همان عيسی كه پولس درباره‌اش موعظه می‌كند، تو را قسم می‌دهيم كه از وجود اين ديوانه بيرون بيايی!» 14هفت پسر «اِسكيوا» كه يک كاهن يهودی بود، اين كار را می‌كردند. 15اما وقتی اين را روی يک ديوانه امتحان كردند، روح ناپاک جواب داده، گفت: «من عيسی را می‌شناسم، پولس را هم می‌شناسم، ولی شما ديگر كيستيد؟» 16سپس، ديوانه به آنان حمله كرد و آنان را چنان زد كه برهنه و خون‌آلود از خانه فرار كردند!
17اين خبر در سراسر افسس پيچيد و به گوش هر يهودی و يونانی رسيد، به طوری كه همه ترسيدند و از آن پس به نام عيسای خداوند احترام می‌گذاشتند. 18-19در ضمن، از كسانی كه به مسيح ايمان آوردند، آنان كه قبلاً با سحر و جادو سروكار داشتند، آمدند و به گناه خود اعتراف كردند و كتابها و طلسمهای خود را در مقابل همه سوزاندند. قيمت اين كتابها برابر پنجاه هزار سكه نقره بود. 20اين پيش‌آمد تأثير عميق پيغام خدا را در آن نواحی نشان می‌داد.
آشوب در افسس
21آنگاه پولس بوسيلهٔ روح خدا هدايت شد كه پيش از مراجعت به اورشليم، به مقدونيه و يونان برود. او می‌گفت: «بعد از آن بايد به روم نيز بروم!» 22پس همكاران خود، تيموتائوس و ارسطوس را جلوتر به يونان فرستاد و خود كمی بيشتر در آسيا ماند.
23ولی تقريباً در همين هنگام، در افسس شورشی بر ضد مسيحيان بر پا شد. 24اين شورش زير سر شخصی بود به نام ديميتريوس كه يک زرگر بود و صنعتگران را دسته‌دسته استخدام كرده بود تا از روی بت ديانا مجسمه‌های نقره بسازند. 25روزی ديميتريوس كارگران و همكاران خود را جمع كرد و به ايشان گفت:
«آقايان، درآمد ما از اين كسب و كار است. 26ولی به طوری كه می‌دانيد و ديده و شنيده‌ايد، اين پولس بسياری را متقاعد ساخته است كه اين بتها خدايان نيستند. به همين جهت بازار ما كساد شده است! نه فقط ما در افسس ضرر می‌بينيم، بلكه همكاران ما در سرتاسر آسيا ورشكست می‌شوند. 27و نه فقط كسب و كار ما از رونق می‌افتد، بلكه حتی ممكن است اين معبد خدای ما ديانا از چشم و دل مردم بيفتد و اين خدای باشكوه فراموش شود، خدايی كه نه فقط تمام مردم آسيا بلكه در سرتاسر دنيا مردم او را می‌پرستند.»
28وقتی حاضرين اين را شنيدند، خشمگين شده، فرياد زدند: «پاينده باد ديانا خدای افسسی‌ها!»
29كم‌كم مردم از گوشه و كنار جمع شدند و طولی نكشيد كه غوغايی در شهر بر پا شد. همه به سوی تماشاخانهٔ شهر هجوم بردند و گايوس و ارِستَرخوس را كه از همسفران پولس و اهل مكادونيه بودند گرفتند و كشان‌كشان برای محاكمه بردند. 30پولس می‌خواست مداخله كند، اما مسيحيان مانع شدند. 31چند نفر از مقامات آن ايالت نيز كه از دوستان پولس بودند، برای او پيغام فرستادند و خواهش كردند كه دخالت نكند و جان خود را به خطر نيندازد.
32در تماشاخانه غوغايی بود! مردم تا نفس داشتند فرياد می‌زدند و هر کس يک چيز می‌گفت. بيشترشان نيز نمی‌دانستند چرا به آنجا آمده‌اند.
33در اين بين چند يهودی، اسكندر را يافتند و جلو انداختند، گويی مسئوليت تمام ماجرا به گردن اوست. اسكندر با تكان دادن دست از مردم خواست كه ساكت شوند و سعی كرد چيزی بگويد. 34اما وقتی فهميدند يهودی است، بلندتر فرياد زدند: «پاينده باد ديانا، خدای افسسی‌ها! پاينده باد ديانا، خدای افسسی‌ها!» اين سر و صدا تا دو ساعت طول كشيد.
35سرانجام شهردار توانست ايشان را آرام كند و چند كلمه سخن بگويد. شهردار گفت: «ای مردم افسس، همه می‌دانند كه شهر ما افسس، حافظ معبد ديانای بزرگ است و تمثال او از آسمان برای ما بر زمين افتاده است. 36چون در اين شكی نيست، پس اگر كسی چيزی بگويد، شما نبايد ناراحت شويد و نسنجيده كاری كنيد. 37شما اين دو نفر را به اينجا آورده‌ايد در صورتی كه نه از بتخانه چيزی دزديده‌اند و نه به بت بی‌احترامی كرده‌اند. 38اگر ديميتريوس و صنعتگران از دست كسی شكايت دارند، درِ دادگاه باز است و قضات هم آماده‌اند تا به شكايتها رسيدگی كنند. بگذاريد ايشان از راههای قانونی اقدام كنند. 39اگر در مورد موضوع ديگری گله و شكايتی باشد، در جلسات رسمی انجمن شهر، حل و فصل خواهد شد. 40زيرا اين خطر وجود دارد كه حاكم رومی به خاطر آشوب امروز، از ما بازخواست كند. اگر از ما بازخواست كند، چه عذری داريم؟ و اگر از پايتخت در اين باره از من توضيح بخواهند، چه جواب بدهم؟»
41سپس، ايشان را مرخص نمود و همه متفرق شدند.
