In Thessalonica
1When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said. 4Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.
5But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason’s house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.17:5 Or the assembly of the people 6But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some other believers before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here, 7and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.” 8When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil. 9Then they made Jason and the others post bond and let them go.
In Berea
10As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.
13But when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea, some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up. 14The believers immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed at Berea. 15Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.
In Athens
16While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. 18A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. 19Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” 21(All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)
22Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.
24“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’17:28 From the Cretan philosopher Epimenides As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’17:28 From the Cilician Stoic philosopher Aratus
29“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. 30In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
32When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” 33At that, Paul left the Council. 34Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.

1さて、一行はアムピポリスとアポロニヤの町を通り、テサロニケに出ました。その町にはユダヤ人の会堂がありました。 2パウロはいつものように会堂へ行き、三回の安息日とも、聖書から語りました。 3そして、キリストの苦しみと復活の預言を説明し、イエスこそキリストだと論証しました。 4聞いた人の何人かは、よく理解して信じました。神をあがめるギリシヤ人や、町の有力な婦人たちで信じた人も少なくありません。
5ところが、ユダヤ人の指導者たちはねたみに駆られ、町のならず者をけしかけて暴動を起こしました。ヤソンの家を襲い、処罰するために、パウロとシラスとを町の議会に引き出そうとしました。 6しかし、当の二人が見つかりません。しかたなく、代わりにヤソンと数人の信者を役人のところに引っぱって行き、いかにも大げさに訴えました。「ご存じでしょうか。世界中をひっかき回してきたパウロとシラスが、今この町でも騒ぎを起こしているのを。 7そんなぶっそうな連中を、ヤソンは家にかくまったのです。やつらは反逆罪を犯しています。カイザル（ローマ皇帝）でなく、イエスという別の王がいる、とふれ回っているのです。」
8-9これを聞くと、町民と役人たちはひどく不安になり、保釈金を取った上で、ヤソンたちを釈放しました。
ベレヤで
10その夜、クリスチャンたちはパウロとシラスを、急いでベレヤへ逃がしました。ベレヤに着くと、二人はいつものように、会堂で語りました。 11ベレヤの人たちは、テサロニケの人たちに比べてずっと心が広く、喜んで話を聞いてくれます。そればかりか、二人の言うことがそのとおりかどうか、毎日、聖書を調べるほど熱心でした。 12その結果、多くの者が神を信じました。中には名の知れたギリシヤ人の婦人も数人いましたし、男性で信じた人も、かなりの数に上りました。
13ところが、テサロニケのユダヤ人たちは、パウロがベレヤで伝道していると聞くと、ベレヤにまで押しかけ、騒ぎ立てたのです。 14クリスチャンたちは、すぐにパウロを海岸へ逃がしましたが、シラスとテモテはベレヤに残りました。 15パウロに同行した人たちは、彼をアテネまで送り、一刻も早くアテネに来るようにという、パウロからシラスとテモテへのことづけを持って、ベレヤに戻りました。
アテネで
16アテネで二人を待つ間、パウロは市内を見物することにしました。ところがどうでしょう。町は偶像でいっぱいでした。パウロの胸には、ふつふつと憤りが込み上げてきました。 17黙ってはいられず、会堂へ行き、ユダヤ人や敬虔な外国人たちと議論する一方、毎日広場で、そこに居合わせた人たちと論じ合いました。
アテネでの混乱
18パウロはまた、エピクロス派やストア派（二つとも当時の代表的ギリシャ哲学）の哲学者たちとも議論を戦わせました。ところが、イエスのことやその復活のことに話がおよぶと、「彼は夢を見ているのだろう」とあざ笑う者もいれば、「おおかた外国の宗教でも押しつけるつもりだろう」と言う者もいました。 19彼らは、アレオパゴス（アレスの丘の広場）にパウロを連れて行き、言いました。「その新しい宗教のことをもっとくわしくお聞かせ願えないでしょうか。 20何やら珍しいことをおっしゃっているようで、とても興味があるのです。」 21アテネに住む人たちは、生粋のアテネ人も、寄留している外国人もみな、新しもの好きで、いつでも何か目新しいことを論じ合っては、日を過ごしていたのです。
22アレオパゴスに立ったパウロは、大ぜいの人を前にして、演説を始めました。「アテネの皆さん。あなたがたは宗教にたいへん関心をお持ちのようです。 23町を歩けば、必ず多くの祭壇が目にとまります。ところで、その中に、『知られない神に』と刻まれたものがありました。あなたがたは、この神様がどういうお方かも知らずに拝んでいるわけですが、私は今、この方のことをお話ししたいと思います。
24この方は、世界と、その中のすべてのものをお造りになった天地の主です。ですから、人の造った神殿にはお住みになりません。 25また人は、この方の必要を満たすこともできません。第一、この方には、必要なものなど何もありません。かえって、すべての人にいのちを与え、必要なものは何でも、十分に与えてくださるのです。 26神様は全人類を、一人の人間アダムから造り、すべての国民を全世界に散らされました。あらかじめ、どの国が興り、どの国が滅びるか、いつそうなるか、何もかも決め、国々の境界をもお定めになったのです。
27これもみな、人々が神を求め、神を探し出すためでした。事実、神様は私たちから遠く離れておられるのではありません。 28私たちは神の中に生き、動き、存在しているのです。あなたがたの詩人の一人が、『私たちは、神の子孫だ』と言ったとおりです。 29もしこのとおりなら、神を、金や銀、あるいは石のかけらなどで人間が造った偶像のようなものと考えるべきではありません。 30今まで、神様はこうした無知を見過ごしてこられました。しかし今は、すべての人に、偶像を捨てて神に立ち返るようにと命じておられるのです。 31神の任命なさった方が正しいさばきを行う日が、決まっているからです。神様はその方を復活させ、そのことの動かぬ証拠とされたのです。」
32死者の復活にまで話がおよぶと、ある者たちは笑って相手にしなくなり、ある者たちは、「くわしいことはまたいつか聞くことにしよう」と言いました。 33こうして議論は終わりましたが、 34数名の者がパウロの側につき、クリスチャンになりました。アレオパゴスの裁判官デオヌシオや、ダマリスという婦人なども、その中に含まれていました。
