In Iconium
1At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed. 2But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. 3So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders. 4The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles. 5There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them. 6But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, 7where they continued to preach the gospel.
In Lystra and Derbe
8In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. 9He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed 10and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.
11When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” 12Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. 13The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.
14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15“Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. 16In the past, he let all nations go their own way. 17Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” 18Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.
19Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.
The Return to Antioch in Syria
21They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, 22strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. 23Paul and Barnabas appointed elders14:23 Or Barnabas ordained elders; or Barnabas had elders elected for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. 24After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia, 25and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
26From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. 27On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. 28And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.
Paulus och Barnabas i Ikonion
1I Ikonion hände samma sak. Paulus och Barnabas gick till judarnas synagoga och talade till människorna med sådan kraft att många, både judar och greker, kom till tro. 2Men de judar som inte ville tro hetsade upp de andra så att de vände sig mot bröderna. 3Trots det stannade de där en längre tid och talade öppet och frimodigt om Herren eftersom de litade på honom. Herren bekräftade sitt budskap om nåd genom tecken och under. 4Men folket i staden delade sig i två grupper: några höll med judarna och andra med apostlarna.
5Hedningar och judar gjorde tillsammans med sina ledare upp en plan att misshandla och stena dem. 6De fick reda på det och flydde därför till städerna Lystra och Derbe i Lykaonien och till trakterna omkring 7och fortsatte att förkunna evangeliet där.
Paulus och Barnabas i Lystra och Derbe
8I Lystra fanns en man som hade varit handikappad sedan födseln och aldrig kunnat gå. 9Mannen satt och lyssnade när Paulus talade och då Paulus tittade på honom, såg han att mannen hade tro så att han kunde bli frisk. 10Därför ropade Paulus till honom: ”Res dig upp och stå på benen!” Och genast hoppade mannen upp och började gå.
11Men när folket såg vad Paulus hade gjort, ropade de högt på lykaoniska: ”Gudarna har blivit människor och kommit ner till oss!” 12De kallade Barnabas för Zeus och Paulus för Hermes eftersom det var han som var den främste talaren. 13Prästen i zeustemplet som låg i utkanten av staden kom sedan med tjurar och blomsterkransar som han och folket skulle offra till dem framför stadsporten.
14Men när det gick upp för apostlarna Barnabas och Paulus vad som höll på att hända, rev de sönder sina mantlar och rusade rakt in i folkhopen och ropade: 15”Män, vad tar ni er till? Vi är vanliga människor precis som ni! Vi har kommit till er med evangeliet om att ni ska vända er från dessa hjälplösa gudar till den levande Guden som har gjort himlen och jorden och haven och allt som finns i dem.14:15 Se Ps 146:6. 16Fram till nu har Gud låtit folken gå sina egna vägar, 17men han har ständigt gett dem bevis på att han finns genom allt det goda han gör. Det är han som ger er regn från himlen och goda skördar, han som ger er mat och fyller era hjärtan med glädje.” 18Och genom att säga detta lyckades Paulus och Barnabas hindra folket från att offra åt dem.
19Men sedan kom några judar från Antiochia och Ikonion och lyckades vända folket mot Paulus och Barnabas. De stenade Paulus och när de trodde att han var död, släpade de ut honom ur staden. 20Men när lärjungarna samlades runt honom, reste han sig upp och gick tillbaka in i staden. Nästa dag gick han sedan vidare till Derbe tillsammans med Barnabas.
Paulus och Barnabas återvänder till Antiochia i Syrien
21Även i Derbe förkunnade Paulus och Barnabas evangelium och fick många nya lärjungar. Sedan återvände de till Lystra, Ikonion och Antiochia 22och stöttade lärjungarna och uppmuntrade dem att hålla fast vid sin tro. De sa: ”Det är genom många svårigheter som vi ska gå in i Guds rike.” 23Paulus och Barnabas utsåg också ledare för varje församling och de fastade och bad och anförtrodde dem åt Herren som de nyss börjat tro på.
24Sedan reste de genom Pisidien och Pamfylien, 25predikade i Perge och fortsatte till Attaleia 26och där tog de en båt över till Antiochia. Det var där man hade överlämnat dem åt Guds nåd inför det uppdrag som de nu hade avslutat. 27När de hade anlänt, kallade de ihop hela församlingen och berättade allt som Gud hade gjort genom dem och hur han hade gett även hedningar möjligheten att börja tro. 28De stannade sedan en ganska lång tid hos lärjungarna där.
