1Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
On Cyprus
4The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. 5When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.
6They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, 7who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. 9Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 10“You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? 11Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”
Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.
In Pisidian Antioch
13From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem. 14From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. 15After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”
16Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country; 18for about forty years he endured their conduct13:18 Some manuscripts he cared for them in the wilderness; 19and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan, giving their land to his people as their inheritance. 20All this took about 450 years.
“After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. 21Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. 22After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’
23“From this man’s descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. 24Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. 25As John was completing his work, he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’
26“Fellow children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. 30But God raised him from the dead, 31and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.
32“We tell you the good news: What God promised our ancestors 33he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm:
“ ‘You are my son;
today I have become your father.’13:33 Psalm 2:7
34God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,
“ ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’13:34 Isaiah 55:3
35So it is also stated elsewhere:
“ ‘You will not let your holy one see decay.’13:35 Psalm 16:10 (see Septuagint)
36“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed. 37But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.
38“Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. 40Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:
41“ ‘Look, you scoffers,
wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
that you would never believe,
even if someone told you.’13:41 Hab. 1:5”
42As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.
44On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him.
46Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47For this is what the Lord has commanded us:
“ ‘I have made you13:47 The Greek is singular. a light for the Gentiles,
that you13:47 The Greek is singular. may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’13:47 Isaiah 49:6”
48When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
49The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. 50But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 51So they shook the dust off their feet as a warning to them and went to Iconium. 52And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
1Nella chiesa di Antiochia cʼerano profeti ed esperti, erano: Barnaba, Simone, soprannominato «il Moro», Lucio di Cirene, Manaen, fratello di latte del re Erode, e Saulo. 2Un giorno, mentre questi uomini stavano adorando il Signore e digiunavano, lo Spirito Santo disse loro: «Mettetemi a disposizione Barnaba e Saulo per una missione speciale, che ho in serbo per loro». 3Allora, dopo aver ancora digiunato e pregato, posero le mani sui due uomini e li fecero partire.
4Mandati dallo Spirito Santo, Saulo e Barnaba giunsero nella città di Selèucia, da dove salparono per Cipro. 5Giunti a Salamina, si misero a predicare la Parola di Dio nelle sinagoghe dei Giudei; Giovanni soprannominato Marco li seguiva come assistente.
6-7Poi attraversarono tutta lʼisola, predicando di città in città, finché giunsero nella città di Pafo. Fu lì che incontrarono un mago, un falso profeta giudeo di nome Bar-Gesù. Questo tipo stava col proconsole Sergio Paolo, uomo di una certa saggezza e intelligenza. Il proconsole invitò Barnaba e Saulo, perché voleva ascoltare la Parola di Dio. 8Ma Elìma, che in greco vuol dire «mago» sʼintromise, cercando di distogliere il proconsole dalle parole di Saulo e Barnaba, per impedirgli di credere nel Signore.
9Allora Saulo detto anche Paolo, pieno di Spirito Santo, lo fissò bene in faccia e gli disse: 10«Figlio del diavolo, pieno di ogni sorta di inganno e di malizia, nemico di tutto ciò che è giusto, non la smetterai mai dʼopporti al Signore?! 11Ma ecco che il Signore ti punisce: per un certo tempo resterai cieco!»
Improvvisamente il mago non vide più niente e cominciò a brancolare, cercando qualcuno che lo portasse per mano. 12Quando il governatore vide quello che era successo, credette, profondamente scosso dalla potenza del messaggio di Dio.
Paolo parte per la provincia dʼAsia
13Paolo e i suoi compagni sʼimbarcarono a Pafo e arrivarono a Pergia, città della Panfilia. Qui Giovanni si separò da loro e ritornò a Gerusalemme. 14Ma Paolo e Barnaba continuarono verso Antiochia, capitale della Pisidia.
Un sabato entrarono nella sinagoga durante il culto, e si misero a sedere. 15Dopo la lettura di alcuni brani dei libri di Mosè e dei profeti, i capi della sinagoga mandarono a dire loro: «Fratelli, se avete qualche parola di esortazione per il popolo, venite e parlate!»
16Allora Paolo si alzò, li salutò e cominciò a parlare: «Israeliti», disse, «e voi tutti che temete Dio, (permettete che cominci il mio discorso con un cenno storico).
17Il Dio dʼIsraele scelse i nostri antenati e fece sì che questo popolo diventasse numeroso mentre era in esilio in Egitto; poi, col suo braccio potente, lo liberò dalla schiavitù. 18Per circa quarantʼanni ne ebbe cura e lo sfamò nel deserto. 19-20Poi, dopo aver distrutto sette nazioni nel paese di Canaan, diede le loro terre in eredità ad Israele. Dopo di ciò, per circa quattrocentocinquantʼanni, il Signore diede a Israele dei giudici, fino ai tempi del profeta Samuele.
21Fu allora che il popolo chiese un re e Dio gli diede Saul, figlio di Chis, della tribù di Beniamino. Saul regnò quarantʼanni. 22Ma Dio lo rimosse dal regno e, al suo posto, scelse per il suo popolo un altro re: Davide, di cui Dio stesso disse: “Davide figlio di Iesse, è un uomo secondo il mio cuore, che mi ubbidirà in tutto e per tutto”. 23Dio è fedele alle sue promesse, ed è proprio dalla discendenza di Davide che ha fatto nascere il Salvatore di Israele: Gesù.
24Prima che Gesù venisse, Giovanni Battista aveva predicato al popolo dʼIsraele, invitando tutti a pentirsi e convertirsi a Dio. 25Verso la fine della sua missione, Giovanni diceva: “Per chi mi avete preso? Per il Cristo, forse? No, non sono io. Ma egli verrà dopo di me ed io, al suo confronto, sono meno di niente!”
26Fratelli, discendenti di Abramo, e voi tutti, che siete qui ad adorare Dio: questa salvezza è per tutti noi! 27Gli abitanti di Gerusalemme e i loro capi non hanno capito che Gesù era il Salvatore e, uccidendolo, fecero in modo che si adempissero le profezie… Infatti, non avevano capito che si riferivano proprio a lui le parole dei profeti, che si leggono ogni sabato! 28Benché non trovassero alcun motivo per condannarlo chiesero a Pilato che fosse ucciso ad ogni costo. 29Poi, quandʼebbero finito di fargli tutto quello che era stato scritto nei libri delle profezie, lo tolsero dalla croce e lo misero in una tomba.
30Ma Dio lo resuscitò dalla morte! 31E Gesù apparve molte volte, nei giorni seguenti, a quelli che lo avevano accompagnato a Gerusalemme dalla Galilea. Questi uomini, ora sono i suoi testimoni davanti al popolo.
32-33Io e Barnaba siamo qui per portarvi questa buona notizia, e cioè che la promessa fatta ai nostri antenati è stata mantenuta da Dio nel nostro tempo, resuscitando Gesù. A questo si riferisce il secondo Salmo, quando dice, parlando di Gesù: “Tu sei mio Figlio, oggi ti ho generato”.
34Dio ha resuscitato Gesù, liberandolo una volta per tutte dalla morte. Anche questo era già stato detto nelle Scritture: “Io manterrò fedelmente le sacre promesse fatte a Davide”. 35Ecco perché in un altro Salmo il Signore stesso dice: “Dio non permetterà che il suo Santo imputridisca nella tomba”. 36Queste parole non si riferivano a Davide, perché dopo che egli ebbe servito il suo popolo, secondo la volontà di Dio, morì e fu sepolto; e il suo corpo imputridì. 37No, fratelli, queste parole si riferivano ad un altro, a qualcuno che Dio resuscitò senza essere nemmeno sfiorato dai segni della morte.
38Fratelli, ascoltate! In questo Gesù cʼè il perdono dei vostri peccati! 39Chiunque crede in lui è libero, cosa questa che la legge di Mosè non potrebbe mai fare. 40Badate che non capiti anche a voi ciò che hanno detto i profeti, e cioè: 41“Voi, gente abituata a disprezzare, state a vedere! Guardate, e sparite per sempre! Perché ai vostri giorni farò una cosa, una cosa talmente straordinaria, a cui non credereste, se qualcuno ve lo raccontasse!”».
42Quel giorno la gente che usciva dalla sinagoga chiese a Paolo e a Barnaba di tornare a parlare sul medesimo argomento la settimana seguente. 43Molti Giudei e nuovi convertiti alla religione ebraica, che erano alla sinagoga, seguirono per strada Paolo e Barnaba, ed essi li persuasero a perseverare nella grazia di Dio. 44La settimana seguente, quasi tutta la città si riunì per sentirli predicare la Parola di Dio.
45Ma, quando i capi giudei videro tutta quella gente, ne furono gelosi e, coprendolo dʼinsulti, cercavano di contraddire tutto ciò che Paolo diceva.
46Allora Paolo e Barnaba parlarono senza peli sulla lingua: «Questo Vangelo di Dio doveva essere annunciato, prima che a tutti gli altri, a voi Giudei. Ma dato che lo avete rifiutato e dimostrate che non vi importa niente della vita eterna, ebbene, noi lo offriamo ai pagani! 47Perché questo è lʼordine che il Signore ci ha dato quando disse: “Ho fatto di voi una luce per i pagani; perché portiate la salvezza in tutto il mondo”».
48A queste parole, i pagani erano fuori di sé dalla gioia e si misero a lodare Dio; e tutti quelli disposti ad accettare la vita eterna, credettero. 49E così la parola del Signore si diffondeva in lungo e in largo per tutto il paese.
50Allora i capi giudei sobillarono le donne religiose dellʼalta società e i cittadini più in vista, e tanto fecero che riuscirono a scatenare una persecuzione contro Paolo e Barnaba, che furono cacciati dalla zona. 51I due, dopo aver scosso la polvere dai piedi contro quella città, se ne andarono ad Iconio. 52Intanto i nuovi convertiti di Antiochia erano pieni di gioia e di Spirito Santo.
