Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven

1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized with1:5 Or in water, but in a few days you will be baptized with1:5 Or in the Holy Spirit.”

6Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

7He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

12Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk1:12 That is, about 5/8 mile or about 1 kilometer from the city. 13When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

15In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16and said, “Brothers and sisters,1:16 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in 6:3; 11:29; 12:17; 16:40; 18:18, 27; 21:7, 17; 28:14, 15. the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.”

18(With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20“For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:

“ ‘May his place be deserted;

let there be no one to dwell in it,’1:20 Psalm 69:25

and,

“ ‘May another take his place of leadership.’1:20 Psalm 109:8

21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

23So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

1-2親愛なる、神を愛する友へ。

この前の書(ルカの福音書)では、イエスの生涯とその教えについて書き、イエスが、ご自分のお選びになった使徒たちに聖霊によって指示を与え、天に帰られたところまでお伝えしました。

3十字架刑のあと、四十日にわたって、イエスは何度も使徒たちに姿を現されました。自分がまぎれもなく、生きているイエスそのものであることを、さまざまな方法で示されたのです。またそのつど、神の国のこともお話しになりました。

イエスの昇天

4そんなある時のことです。イエスは使徒たちに、こうお命じになりました。「エルサレムから離れてはいけません。前にも言ったように、父が約束を果たしてくださるまで、待っていなさい。 5バプテスマのヨハネは水でバプテスマ(洗礼)を授けましたが、もうすぐ、あなたがたは聖霊によるバプテスマを受けるからです。」

6そこで、またイエスが姿を現された時、使徒たちは心躍らせながら、「主よ。今こそイスラエルを解放し、独立国として再興なさるのですか」と尋ねました。

7「それがいつかは、父がお決めになります。あなたがたが、あれこれ言うことはできません。 8しかし、聖霊があなたがたに下る時、あなたがたは大きな力を受け、エルサレムからユダヤ全土、そしてサマリヤから地の果てまで、わたしの死と復活を伝える証人となります。」

9こうお答えになると、イエスは、見守る使徒たちの目の前で天に上げられ、たちまち雲の中に姿を消されました。 10彼らがなおも目をこらして見上げていると、突然、白い衣を着た人が二人、そばに立って言いました。

11「ガリラヤの人たちよ。なぜ空ばかり見上げているのですか。イエスは天にのぼりましたが、いつかまた、今と同じようにして地上へ帰って来られるのです。」

12このことが起こったのはオリーブ山でした。そこから一キロほど歩いてエルサレムに戻るとすぐ、 13-14使徒たちは、泊まっていた家の二階で祈り会を始めました。そこにいたのは次の人たちです。ペテロ、ヨハネ、ヤコブ、アンデレ、ピリポ、トマス、バルトロマイ、マタイ、ヤコブ〔アルパヨの息子〕、シモン〔「熱心党」という反体制グループのメンバー〕、ユダ〔ヤコブの息子〕、イエスの母、イエスの兄弟たち、何人かの婦人たち。

15この祈り会は数日間続きました。ある日、百二十人ほどが集まっていた時、ペテロが立ち上がり、次のように提案しました。 16「皆さん。イエスを捕らえた暴徒どもの手引きをしたユダには、聖書のことばどおりのことが起こりました。そうならなければならなかったのです。ずっと昔、聖霊によって、ダビデ王が預言したことだからです。 17ユダは、使徒にも選ばれた、私たちの仲間でした。 18ところが彼は、裏切りで得た金で畑を手に入れたものの、まっさかさまに落ちて体が裂け、はらわたがみな飛び出すという無残な死に方をしたのです。 19この出来事は、あっという間にエルサレム中に広まり、人々はその場所を『血の畑』と呼ぶようになりました。 20実は、ダビデ王が聖書の詩篇の中で、『彼の家は荒れ果て、だれも住まなくなれ』『彼の仕事を、ほかの人に与えよ』と預言しているのです。

21-22だから今、ユダの代わりにほかの人を、イエスの復活の証人に選ばなければなりません。選ばれる者の資格ですが、何と言っても、初めから私たちと行動を共にしてきた人でなければいけません。そう、イエス様がヨハネからバプテスマを受けて以来、別れを告げて天にのぼられるまでの間、ずっと私たちといっしょにいた人です。」

23一同は二名の候補者を立てました。ユストというヨセフ〔別名バルサバ〕と、マッテヤです。

24-25それから、ふさわしい人が選ばれるように、みな一心に祈りました。「ああ、主よ。あなたはすべての人の心をご存じです。どうぞ、ユダの代わりに、二人のうちどちらを使徒にお選びになるかお示しください。ユダは当然行くべき所に行ってしまいましたから。」

26くじを引き、当たったのはマッテヤでした。こうして、ほかの十一人に、彼が使徒として加わることになりました。
