The Man of Lawlessness
1Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. 3Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness2:3 Some manuscripts sin is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
5Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
Stand Firm
13But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits2:13 Some manuscripts because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings2:15 Or traditions we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
A segunda vinda de Cristo
1Agora, irmãos, voltando ao assunto do regresso do nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo e da nossa reunião com ele, vos rogamos 2que não se deixem influenciar tão facilmente no vosso entendimento nem perturbarem-se, quer por pretensas revelações espirituais, quer por mensagens ou cartas que vos digam terem sido enviadas por nós, e que têm como objetivo levar-vos a acreditar que o dia de Cristo já terá acontecido. 3Que ninguém de forma alguma vos engane; pois isso não acontecerá sem que antes ocorra uma grande revolta contra Deus e se revele aquele homem que encarnará em si mesmo a iniquidade, o filho da perdição. 4Ele se oporá e levantará acima de tudo quanto se chame divino e digno de adoração. E pretenderá, mesmo, tomar o lugar de Deus no próprio templo de Deus, fazendo-se passar por Deus.
5Não se lembram de que vos falei de tudo isto quando ainda me encontrava convosco? 6Também sabem o que, de momento, impede esse homem maligno de aparecer. 7É verdade que essa força de iniquidade já vai atuando, mas há um que o impede até que seja retirado. 8Só nessa altura se revelará aquele ser mau que o Senhor desfará pelo sopro da sua boca e que será destruído pelo esplendor com que Cristo aparecerá. 9Esse homem de pecado atuará segundo o poder de Satanás, através de manifestações de força, milagres e prodígios, com o fim de darem apoio às suas mentiras. 10Ele usará todo o poder da injustiça para enganar aqueles que estão no caminho da perdição, porque se recusam a acreditar na verdade que os conduziria à salvação. 11Por isso, Deus permitirá que neles atue uma influência de engano que os levará a crer na mentira. 12E assim serão julgados todos os que não creram na verdade e ficaram satisfeitos com a maldade.
Fiquem firmes
13Contudo, devemos sem cessar agradecer a Deus por vós, queridos irmãos, a quem o Senhor ama, por vos ter escolhido desde o princípio, para obterem a salvação, purificando-vos da ação do pecado, pelo Espírito Santo e pela vossa fé na verdade. 14Ele chamou-vos à salvação, por intermédio do evangelho que levámos ao vosso conhecimento, para que participassem da glória de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.
15Sendo assim, irmãos, permaneçam firmes e bem apegados aos ensinamentos que sempre vos temos dado, seja de viva voz, seja por carta.
16Que o Senhor Jesus Cristo e o nosso Deus e Pai, que nos amou sem que o tenhamos merecido, e que sempre nos consola e nos enche de boa esperança, 17encoraje os vossos corações e renove as vossas forças em tudo o que fizerem, seja por boas palavras, seja por bons atos.
