David Hears of Saul’s Death
1After the death of Saul, David returned from striking down the Amalekites and stayed in Ziklag two days. 2On the third day a man arrived from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him honor.
3“Where have you come from?” David asked him.
He answered, “I have escaped from the Israelite camp.”
4“What happened?” David asked. “Tell me.”
“The men fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”
5Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”
6“I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,” the young man said, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit. 7When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, ‘What can I do?’
8“He asked me, ‘Who are you?’
“ ‘An Amalekite,’ I answered.
9“Then he said to me, ‘Stand here by me and kill me! I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.’
10“So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.”
11Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them. 12They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13David said to the young man who brought him the report, “Where are you from?”
“I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,” he answered.
14David asked him, “Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”
15Then David called one of his men and said, “Go, strike him down!” So he struck him down, and he died. 16For David had said to him, “Your blood be on your own head. Your own mouth testified against you when you said, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’ ”
David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan
17David took up this lament concerning Saul and his son Jonathan, 18and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jashar):
19“A gazelle1:19 Gazelle here symbolizes a human dignitary. lies slain on your heights, Israel.
How the mighty have fallen!
20“Tell it not in Gath,
proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
lest the daughters of the Philistines be glad,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.
21“Mountains of Gilboa,
may you have neither dew nor rain,
may no showers fall on your terraced fields.1:21 Or / nor fields that yield grain for offerings
For there the shield of the mighty was despised,
the shield of Saul—no longer rubbed with oil.
22“From the blood of the slain,
from the flesh of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.
23Saul and Jonathan—
in life they were loved and admired,
and in death they were not parted.
They were swifter than eagles,
they were stronger than lions.
24“Daughters of Israel,
weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet and finery,
who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.
25“How the mighty have fallen in battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother;
you were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,
more wonderful than that of women.
27“How the mighty have fallen!
The weapons of war have perished!”
داوود از مرگ شائول باخبر می‌شود
1-2پس از كشته شدن شائول، داوود عماليقی‌ها را سركوب كرد و به شهر صقلغ بازگشت. سه روز از اقامت داوود در صقلغ می‌گذشت كه از لشكر شائول يک نفر با لباس پاره، در حالی که روی سرش خاک ريخته بود، به صقلغ آمد و در حضور داوود تعظيم نموده، به خاک افتاد.
3داوود از او پرسيد: «از كجا آمده‌ای؟»
جواب داد: «از لشكر اسرائيل فرار كرده‌ام.»
4داوود پرسيد: «به من بگو چه اتفاقی افتاده است؟»
جواب داد: «تمام سربازان ما فرار كرده‌اند. عدهٔ زيادی از افراد ما كشته و مجروح شده‌اند. شائول و پسرش يوناتان هم كشته شده‌اند!»
5داوود از او پرسيد: «از كجا می‌دانی كه شائول و پسرش يوناتان مرده‌اند؟»
6گفت: «برحسب تصادف، در كوه جلبوع بودم كه ديدم شائول به نيزهٔ خود تكيه داده بود و عرابه‌ها و سواران دشمن هر لحظه به او نزديكتر می‌شدند. 7وقتی شائول چشمش به من افتاد مرا صدا زد. گفتم: بله آقا. 8پرسيد كه كی هستم. گفتم: يک عماليقی. 9آنگاه التماس كرد: بيا و مرا بكش چون به سختی مجروح شده‌ام و می‌خواهم زودتر راحت شوم. 10پس من هم او را كشتم، چون می‌دانستم كه زنده نمی‌ماند،1:10 اين شخص دروغ می‌گفت. برای روشن شدن اصل قضيه، به اول سموئيل 31:3و4 رجوع شود. احتمالاً او جسد شائول را در صحرا ديده بود و به خيال خودش اگر به داوود می‌گفت که خودش شائول را کشته، داوود به او پاداش می‌داد. بعد تاج و بازوبندش را گرفتم و نزد آقای خويش آوردم.»
11داوود و افرادش وقتی اين خبر را شنيدند از شدت ناراحتی لباسهای خود را پاره كردند. 12آنها برای شائول و پسرش يوناتان و قوم خداوند و به خاطر سربازان شهيد اسرائيلی، تمام روز روزه گرفته، گريه كردند و به سوگواری پرداختند.
13آنگاه داوود به جوانی كه اين خبر را آورده بود گفت: «تو اهل كجا هستی؟»
او جواب داد: «من يک عماليقی هستم ولی در سرزمين شما زندگی می‌كنم.»
14داوود به او گفت: «چطور جرأت كردی پادشاه برگزيدهٔ خداوند را بكشی؟» 15سپس به يكی از افرادش دستور داد او را بكشد و آن مرد او را كشت.
16داوود گفت: «تو خودت باعث مرگت شدی، چون با زبان خودت اعتراف كردی كه پادشاه برگزيدهٔ خداوند را كشته‌ای.»
مرثيهٔ داوود برای شائول و يوناتان
17-18آنگاه داوود اين مرثيه را برای شائول و يوناتان نوشت و بعد دستور داد در سراسر اسرائيل خوانده شود. (كلمات اين مرثيه در كتاب ياشر نوشته شده است.)
19«ای اسرائيل، جلال تو بر فراز تپه‌ها از بين رفت.
دلاوران تو به خاک افتاده‌اند!
20اين را به فلسطينی‌ها نگوييد، مبادا شادی كنند.
اين را از شهرهای جت و اشقلون مخفی بداريد،
مبادا دختران خدانشناس فلسطين وجد نمايند.
21«ای كوه جلبوع، كاش ديگر شبنم و باران بر تو نبارد،
كاش ديگر محصول غله در دامنت نرويد،
زيرا در آنجا شائول و دلاوران اسرائيل مرده‌اند،
از اين پس، سپر شائول را روغن نخواهند ماليد.
22«شائول و يوناتان، هر دو دشمنان نيرومند خود را كشتند
و دست خالی از جنگ برنگشتند.
23شائول و يوناتان چقدر محبوب و نازنين بودند!
در زندگی و در مرگ از هم جدا نشدند!
از عقابها سريعتر و از شيرها تواناتر بودند!
24«ای زنان اسرائيل، برای شائول گريه كنيد.
او شما را با لباسهای زيبا و گرانبها می‌پوشانْد و با زر و زيور می‌آراست.
25«يوناتان بر فراز تپه‌ها كشته شده است.
دلاوران در ميدان جنگ افتاده‌اند.
26«ای برادر من يوناتان، برای تو بسيار دلتنگم.
چقدر تو را دوست داشتم!
محبت تو برای من، عمیقتر از محبت زنان بود!
27«دلاوران به خاک افتاده و مرده‌اند.
اسلحه آنها را به غنيمت برده‌اند.»
