The Widow’s Olive Oil
1The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”
2Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”
“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”
3Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”
5She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”
But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
7She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”
The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life
8One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. 9She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. 10Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.”
11One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. 12He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.” So he called her, and she stood before him. 13Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’ ”
She replied, “I have a home among my own people.”
14“What can be done for her?” Elisha asked.
Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”
15Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. 16“About this time next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”
“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”
17But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.
18The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers. 19He said to his father, “My head! My head!”
His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.
22She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”
23“Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.”
“That’s all right,” she said.
24She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.” 25So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.
When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! 26Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’ ”
“Everything is all right,” she said.
27When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”
28“Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”
29Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
30But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.
31Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”
32When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. 33He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord. 34Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
36Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.” 37She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.
Death in the Pot
38Elisha returned to Gilgal and there was a famine in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these prophets.”
39One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were. 40The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.
41Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.
Feeding of a Hundred
42A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing the man of God twenty loaves of barley bread baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said.
43“How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.
But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’ ” 44Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.
Înmulțirea uleiului văduvei

– Ce aș putea face pentru tine? Spune‑mi ce ai în casa ta?
Ea a răspuns:
– Roaba ta nu mai are nimic în casă, decât un vas cu ulei.
3Elisei a zis:
– Du‑te și cere vase de la toți vecinii tăi. Cere vase goale, și să nu fie puține. 4Când te vei întoarce, încuie ușa după tine și după fiii tăi. Apoi toarnă ulei în fiecare din aceste vase și, când vor fi pline, pune‑le deoparte.
5Atunci a plecat și a încuiat ușa după ea și după fiii săi. Ei apropiau vasele și ea turna ulei în ele.
6Când vasele au fost pline, ea i‑a zis fiului său:
– Mai adu‑mi un vas.
El i‑a răspuns:
– Nu mai este niciunul.
Atunci uleiul a încetat să mai curgă.
7După aceea s‑a dus și i‑a spus omului lui Dumnezeu lucrul acesta. El i‑a zis: „Du‑te, vinde uleiul și plătește‑ți datoria, iar cu ce va rămâne vei putea trăi tu și fiii tăi.“
Învierea fiului șunamitei
8Într‑o zi, Elisei trecea prin Șunem. Acolo era o femeie bogată care a stăruit ca el să mănânce la ea. Și ori de câte ori trecea pe acolo, Elisei se oprea la ea ca să mănânce. 9Ea i‑a zis soțului ei: „Iată, știu că omul acesta, care trece adesea pe la noi, este un om sfânt al lui Dumnezeu. 10Să facem, te rog, pe acoperiș o mică odaie cu pereți și să punem în ea un pat pentru el, o masă, un scaun și un sfeșnic, pentru ca oricând va veni la noi, să poată sta acolo.“
11Într‑o zi, când Elisei s‑a întors, a intrat în odaia de sus și s‑a culcat acolo. 12Apoi i‑a zis slujitorului său, Ghehazi: „Cheam‑o pe șunamita aceasta!“ Ghehazi a chemat‑o și ea a stat înaintea lui. 13Elisei i‑a zis lui Ghehazi: „Spune‑i, te rog: «Iată că tu te‑ai deranjat făcând toate aceste lucruri pentru noi. Cu ce am putea să‑ți răsplătim? Să vorbim pentru tine regelui sau conducătorului oștirii?»“ Ea a răspuns: „Eu locuiesc în mijlocul poporului meu.“13 Cu referire la clanul și familia din care făcea parte; cu alte cuvinte: Este cine să aibă grijă de mine.
14Elisei a zis:
– Ce putem face pentru ea?
Ghehazi a răspuns:
– Ei bine, ea nu are niciun fiu, iar soțul ei este bătrân.
15Elisei a zis:
– Cheam‑o!
El a chemat‑o, iar ea s‑a oprit în prag.
16Elisei a zis:
– La anul, pe vremea aceasta, vei ține în brațe un fiu.
Ea a zis:
– Nu, stăpânul meu! Să n‑o minți pe roaba ta, omule al lui Dumnezeu!
17Femeia a rămas însărcinată și a născut un fiu chiar pe vremea aceea, în anul următor, așa cum i‑a zis Elisei.
18Și copilul s‑a făcut mare. Într‑o zi, când se dusese la tatăl său, la secerători, 19copilul i‑a zis tatălui său: „Capul meu! Capul meu!“ Atunci tatăl i‑a zis unui slujitor: „Du‑l la mama lui!“ 20Acesta l‑a ridicat și l‑a dus la mama lui. Copilul a stat pe genunchii ei până la amiază, și apoi a murit. 21Atunci ea s‑a suit și l‑a culcat pe patul omului lui Dumnezeu. Apoi a închis ușa după ea și a ieșit.
22L‑a chemat pe soțul său și i‑a zis:
– Trimite‑mi, te rog, pe unul din slujitori și o măgăriță ca să mă duc repede până la omul lui Dumnezeu și să mă întorc.
23Dar el a întrebat‑o:
– De ce te duci astăzi la el? Nu este nici lună nouă23 Vezi Num. 28:11-15., și nici Sabat.
Ea a răspuns:
– Fii pe pace!
24Și după ce a înșeuat măgărița, a zis slujitorului ei: „Mână și pleacă! Să nu te oprești pentru mine decât atunci când îți voi spune!“ 25Ea a plecat și a ajuns la omul lui Dumnezeu, pe muntele Carmel. Când a văzut‑o de la depărtare, omul lui Dumnezeu i‑a zis slujitorului său, Ghehazi: „Iată! Aceasta‑i șunamita! 26Acum, aleargă, te rog, ca s‑o întâmpini și întreab‑o dacă toate sunt bune cu ea, cu soțul ei și cu copilul ei.“ Ea i‑a răspuns: „Totul este bine!“
27După ce a ajuns la omul lui Dumnezeu pe munte, i‑a îmbrățișat picioarele. Atunci Ghehazi s‑a apropiat ca s‑o îndepărteze, dar omul lui Dumnezeu i‑a zis: „Las‑o, căci sufletul îi este amărât. Domnul mi‑a ascuns lucrul acesta și nu mi‑a spus.“ 28Ea a zis: „Am cerut eu oare un fiu stăpânului meu? Nu ți‑am spus eu să nu mă amăgești?“
29Elisei i‑a zis lui Ghehazi: „Încinge‑ți coapsele, ia toiagul meu în mână și fugi. Dacă te vei întâlni cu cineva să nu‑l saluți și, dacă te va saluta cineva, să nu‑i răspunzi. Să așezi toiagul meu pe fața băiatului.“ 30Dar mama băiatului a zis: „Viu este Domnul și viu este sufletul tău că nu te voi părăsi!“ El s‑a ridicat și a urmat‑o.
31Ghehazi s‑a dus înainte, a așezat toiagul pe fața băiatului, dar el n‑a scos niciun sunet și n‑a dat niciun semn de viață. Apoi Ghehazi s‑a întors să‑l întâlnească pe Elisei și i‑a zis: „Băiatul nu s‑a trezit.“
32Când a ajuns Elisei în casă, iată că băiatul era mort, culcat pe patul lui. 33Elisei a intrat, a închis ușa după ei amândoi și s‑a rugat Domnului. 34Apoi a urcat în camera de sus și s‑a culcat peste copil, punându‑și gura lui pe gura acestuia, ochii lui pe ochii acestuia și mâinile lui pe mâinile acestuia. S‑a întins peste el, și trupul copilului s‑a încălzit. 35Elisei s‑a întors și s‑a plimbat prin casă, încoace și încolo, apoi a urcat din nou și s‑a întins peste copil. Atunci băiatul a strănutat de șapte ori și și‑a deschis ochii. 36Elisei l‑a chemat pe Ghehazi și i‑a zis: „Cheam‑o pe șunamită!“ Și el a chemat‑o. Când a ajuns la el, Elisei i‑a zis: „Ridică‑ți fiul!“ 37Ea a intrat și a căzut la picioarele lui, plecându‑se până la pământ. Apoi și‑a ridicat fiul și a ieșit.
Dregerea mâncării otrăvite
38Elisei s‑a întors la Ghilgal. În țară era foamete. În timp ce fiii profeților ședeau în fața lui, el i‑a zis slujitorului său: „Pune oala cea mare și fierbe ciorbă pentru profeți“. 39Unul din ei a ieșit în câmp pentru a aduna ierburi și a găsit o viță sălbatică. A cules din ea dovleci sălbatici, până și‑a umplut poala. Când s‑a întors, i‑a tăiat și i‑a pus în oala cu ciorbă, căci nu știa ce sunt. 40Apoi au dat oamenilor să le mănânce.
Dar când au început să mănânce din ciorbă, au strigat și au zis:
– Omule al lui Dumnezeu, moartea este în oală!
Și n‑au putut să mănânce din ea.
41Elisei a zis:
– Aduceți făină.
El a aruncat făină în oală și a zis:
– Turnați ciorbă pentru oameni ca să mănânce.
Și n‑a mai fost nimic otrăvitor în oală.
Înmulțirea pâinii
42A venit un om din Baal-Șalișa, aducând omului lui Dumnezeu douăzeci de pâini de orz, din cele dintâi roade și spice proaspete într‑un sac. Elisei a zis:
– Dă‑le oamenilor să mănânce.
43Dar slujitorul său a zis:
– Cum pot să împart acestea la o sută de oameni?
Elisei a zis:
– Dă‑le oamenilor să mănânce, căci așa vorbește Domnul: „Vor mânca și va mai și rămâne!“
44Atunci le‑a pus pâine înainte, iar ei au mâncat și le‑a mai și rămas, după Cuvântul Domnului.
