Hezekiah’s Illness
1In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”
2Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3“Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
4Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: 5“Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. 6I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.’ ”
7Then Isaiah said, “Prepare a poultice of figs.” They did so and applied it to the boil, and he recovered.
8Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord on the third day from now?”
9Isaiah answered, “This is the Lord’s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?”
10“It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps,” said Hezekiah. “Rather, have it go back ten steps.”
11Then the prophet Isaiah called on the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.
Envoys From Babylon
12At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of Hezekiah’s illness. 13Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine olive oil—his armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
14Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did those men say, and where did they come from?”
“From a distant land,” Hezekiah replied. “They came from Babylon.”
15The prophet asked, “What did they see in your palace?”
“They saw everything in my palace,” Hezekiah said. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
16Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord: 17The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. 18And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”
19“The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,” Hezekiah replied. For he thought, “Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?”
20As for the other events of Hezekiah’s reign, all his achievements and how he made the pool and the tunnel by which he brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 21Hezekiah rested with his ancestors. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.

1În acele zile, Ezechia s‑a îmbolnăvit și era aproape de moarte. Profetul Isaia, fiul lui Amoț, a venit la el și i‑a zis: „Așa vorbește Domnul: «Pune‑ți casa în rânduială căci vei muri. Nu vei mai trăi.»“
2Atunci Ezechia s‑a întors cu fața spre perete și s‑a rugat Domnului, zicând: 3„Oh, Doamne, adu‑Ți aminte, Te rog, că am umblat înaintea Ta cu credincioșie și din toată inima și am făcut ce este bine în ochii Tăi.“ Și Ezechia a plâns cu amar.
4Isaia nu ieșise încă din curtea din mijloc, când, Cuvântul Domnului i‑a vorbit, zicând: 5„Întoarce‑te și spune‑i lui Ezechia, conducătorul poporului Meu, astfel: «Așa vorbește Domnul, Dumnezeul tatălui tău David: ‘Ți‑am auzit rugăciunea și ți‑am văzut lacrimile. Iată că te voi vindeca. În a treia zi te vei sui la Casa Domnului. 6Voi adăuga la zilele tale încă cincisprezece ani, te voi izbăvi, pe tine și cetatea aceasta, din mâna împăratului Asiriei și voi apăra această cetate de dragul Meu și de dragul lui David, robul Meu.’»“
7Apoi Isaia a zis: „Aduceți o turtă de smochine!“ Ei au adus‑o și au pus‑o pe bubă, și el a trăit.
8Ezechia îl întrebase pe Isaia:
– După ce semn voi ști că Domnul mă va vindeca și mă voi sui la Casa Domnului a treia zi?
9Isaia îi răspunsese:
– Acesta este semnul din partea Domnului pentru tine, prin care vei cunoaște că Domnul va împlini cuvântul pe care l‑a rostit: „Să treacă umbra zece trepte înainte sau înapoi?“
10Ezechia răspunsese:
– E ceva neînsemnat ca umbra să treacă zece trepte înainte. Mai bine să treacă zece trepte înapoi.
11Atunci profetul Isaia L‑a chemat pe Domnul și El a făcut ca umbra să treacă înapoi zece trepte pe cadranul lui Ahaz.
Solia babiloniană la Ierusalim
(2 Cron. 32:1; Is. 39:1-8)
12În acea perioadă, Merodak-Baladan, fiul lui Baladan, rege al Babilonului12 Rege al Babilonului (721–710 î.Cr.; 703–702 î.Cr.). În anul 705 î.Cr. profită de moartea lui Sargon II (721–705 î.Cr.) și caută să încheie alianțe militare prin care să‑și recâștige tronul., i‑a trimis lui Ezechia scrisori și un dar, fiindcă auzise că Ezechia fusese bolnav. 13Ezechia i‑a ascultat și le‑a arătat tot ce era în vistieria sa: argintul, aurul, mirodeniile și uleiul cel scump, armamentul lui și tot ce se afla în magaziile lui. Nu a rămas nimic în palatul sau în regatul său, pe care Ezechia să nu li‑l fi arătat.
14Atunci profetul Isaia a venit la regele Ezechia și l‑a întrebat:
– Ce au zis oamenii aceia și de unde au venit?
Ezechia i‑a răspuns:
– Au venit dintr‑o țară îndepărtată, din Babilon.
15Profetul l‑a întrebat:
– Ce‑au văzut în palatul tău?
Ezechia a răspuns:
– Au văzut tot ceea ce este în palatul meu și n‑a rămas nimic în magaziile mele pe care să nu li‑l fi arătat.
16Atunci Isaia i‑a zis lui Ezechia:
– Ascultă Cuvântul Domnului: 17„Iată, vin zile când tot ce este în palatul tău și tot ce au agonisit părinții tăi până în ziua aceasta, va fi dus în Babilon. Nu va mai fi lăsat nimic, zice Domnul. 18Unii dintre propriii tăi fii, care ți s‑au născut, îți vor fi luați și vor fi făcuți eunuci în palatul împăratului Babilonului.“
19Ezechia i‑a zis lui Isaia:
– Cuvântul Domnului pe care l‑ai rostit este bun.
„De ce nu“, se gândea19 Sau: spunea. el, „atâta vreme cât în timpul vieții mele va fi pace și siguranță?“
20Celelalte fapte ale lui Ezechia, toate isprăvile lui, cum a făcut iazul și canalul prin care a adus apă în cetate, nu sunt scrise oare în „Cartea cronicilor regilor lui Iuda“? 21Ezechia a adormit alături de părinții săi, iar în locul lui a domnit fiul său Manase.
