The Dedication of the Temple
1When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. 2The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled it. 3When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying,
“He is good;
his love endures forever.”
4Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the Lord. 5And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand head of cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the people dedicated the temple of God. 6The priests took their positions, as did the Levites with the Lord’s musical instruments, which King David had made for praising the Lord and which were used when he gave thanks, saying, “His love endures forever.” Opposite the Levites, the priests blew their trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.
7Solomon consecrated the middle part of the courtyard in front of the temple of the Lord, and there he offered burnt offerings and the fat of the fellowship offerings, because the bronze altar he had made could not hold the burnt offerings, the grain offerings and the fat portions.
8So Solomon observed the festival at that time for seven days, and all Israel with him—a vast assembly, people from Lebo Hamath to the Wadi of Egypt. 9On the eighth day they held an assembly, for they had celebrated the dedication of the altar for seven days and the festival for seven days more. 10On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their homes, joyful and glad in heart for the good things the Lord had done for David and Solomon and for his people Israel.
The Lord Appears to Solomon
11When Solomon had finished the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, and had succeeded in carrying out all he had in mind to do in the temple of the Lord and in his own palace, 12the Lord appeared to him at night and said:
“I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices.
13“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. 16I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.
17“As for you, if you walk before me faithfully as David your father did, and do all I command, and observe my decrees and laws, 18I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor to rule over Israel.’
19“But if you7:19 The Hebrew is plural. turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you7:19 The Hebrew is plural. and go off to serve other gods and worship them, 20then I will uproot Israel from my land, which I have given them, and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. I will make it a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples. 21This temple will become a heap of rubble. All7:21 See some Septuagint manuscripts, Old Latin, Syriac, Arabic and Targum; Hebrew And though this temple is now so imposing, all who pass by will be appalled and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’ 22People will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why he brought all this disaster on them.’ ”
La gloire de l’Eternel remplit le Temple
(1 R 8.62-66)
1Lorsque Salomon eut terminé sa prière, le feu tomba du ciel et consuma l’holocauste ainsi que les sacrifices, et la gloire de l’Eternel remplit le Temple7.1 Voir Lv 9.23-24.. 2Les prêtres ne pouvaient pénétrer dans le temple de l’Eternel, car la gloire de l’Eternel avait rempli l’édifice. 3Tous les Israélites virent descendre le feu et la gloire de l’Eternel sur le Temple ; ils s’inclinèrent le visage contre terre sur le dallage du parvis, se prosternèrent et se mirent à louer l’Eternel en disant : « Oui il est bon, oui son amour est éternel ! »
4Le roi et tout le peuple offrirent des sacrifices devant l’Eternel. 5Le roi Salomon offrit en sacrifice 22 000 bœufs et 120 000 moutons. C’est de cette manière que le roi et tout le peuple inaugurèrent le temple de Dieu. 6Les prêtres se tenaient à leur poste, les lévites prirent position avec les instruments de musique de l’Eternel que le roi David avait conçus pour louer l’Eternel en chantant : « Oui, son amour dure à toujours » ; c’est David qui les avait chargés de jouer de ces instruments pour louer l’Eternel. Quant aux prêtres, ils faisaient retentir les trompettes vis-à-vis d’eux et tout Israël se tenait debout.
7Salomon consacra l’intérieur de la cour qui s’étend devant le temple de l’Eternel pour y offrir les holocaustes et les graisses des sacrifices de communion, car l’autel de bronze que Salomon avait fait fabriquer ne pouvait recevoir tous les holocaustes, les offrandes et les graisses. 8Salomon et tout Israël célébrèrent la fête7.8 Il s’agit de la fête des Cabanes (voir 5.3). pendant sept jours. Un très grand nombre de gens étaient venus depuis la région de Hamath jusqu’au torrent d’Egypte7.8 C’est-à-dire de l’extrême nord à l’extrême sud du pays. Le torrent d’Egypte est sans doute le Wadi el-Arish qui a son embouchure à quelque 80 kilomètres au sud de Gaza.. 9Le huitième jour eut lieu une réunion cultuelle. Ainsi, on avait fait la dédicace de l’autel pendant sept jours, et l’on avait célébré la fête durant sept autres jours7.9 La fête de la Dédicace avait duré du 8e au 14e jour du mois, la fête des Cabanes du 15e au 22e jour.. 10Le vingt-troisième jour du septième mois, Salomon renvoya le peuple chacun chez soi. Tous étaient joyeux et avaient le cœur content à cause des bienfaits que l’Eternel avait accordés à David, à Salomon et à Israël, son peuple.
La réponse de l’Eternel à Salomon
(1 R 9.1-9)
11Salomon acheva ainsi le temple de l’Eternel et le palais royal. Il réussit à réaliser tout ce qu’il s’était proposé de faire pour ces deux édifices. 12Alors l’Eternel apparut à Salomon pendant la nuit et lui dit : J’ai exaucé ta prière et je choisis cet endroit comme lieu de sacrifices pour moi. 13Lorsque je fermerai le ciel et qu’il n’y aura pas de pluie, lorsque j’ordonnerai aux sauterelles de ravager le pays ou que j’enverrai la peste contre mon peuple, 14si alors mon peuple qui est appelé de mon nom s’humilie, prie et recherche ma grâce, s’il se détourne de sa mauvaise conduite, moi, je l’écouterai du ciel, je lui pardonnerai ses péchés et je guérirai son pays. 15Désormais, j’écouterai attentivement et je considérerai favorablement la prière faite en ce lieu. 16A présent, je choisis cet édifice et j’en fais un lieu saint pour y être à jamais présent. Je veillerai toujours sur lui et j’y aurai mon cœur. 17Quant à toi, si tu te conduis devant moi comme ton père David, si tu fais tout ce que je t’ai ordonné et si tu obéis aux ordonnances et aux lois que je t’ai données, 18je rendrai stable pour toujours ton trône royal selon l’alliance que j’ai conclue avec ton père David lorsque je lui ai dit : « Il y aura toujours l’un de tes descendants qui gouvernera Israël7.18 Voir 1 R 2.4.. » 19Mais si vous vous détournez, si vous négligez mes ordonnances et mes lois que j’ai établies pour vous, et si vous allez rendre un culte à d’autres dieux et vous prosterner devant eux, 20alors je vous arracherai de mon pays que je vous ai donné, je rejetterai loin de ma vue ce temple que j’ai consacré pour y être présent, et je ferai en sorte que tous les peuples s’en moquent et ricanent à son sujet. 21Et ce temple qui aura été si glorieux, tous ceux qui passeront à proximité seront consternés et s’exclameront : « Pourquoi l’Eternel a-t-il traité ainsi ce pays et ce temple7.21 Voir 2 Ch 36.19. ? » 22Et l’on répondra : « C’est parce qu’ils ont abandonné l’Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres, qui les avait fait sortir d’Egypte, parce qu’ils se sont attachés à d’autres dieux, qu’ils se sont prosternés devant eux et les ont adorés. Voilà pourquoi il leur a infligé tout ce malheur. »
