Hannah’s Prayer
1Then Hannah prayed and said:
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn2:1 Horn here symbolizes strength; also in verse 10. is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance.
2“There is no one holy like the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
3“Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
and by him deeds are weighed.
4“The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
5Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry are hungry no more.
She who was barren has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.
6“The Lord brings death and makes alive;
he brings down to the grave and raises up.
7The Lord sends poverty and wealth;
he humbles and he exalts.
8He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.
“For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
9He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.
“It is not by strength that one prevails;
10those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
“He will give strength to his king
and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
11Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the Lord under Eli the priest.
Eli’s Wicked Sons
12Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord. 13Now it was the practice of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat was being boiled 14and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
16If the person said to him, “Let the fat be burned first, and then take whatever you want,” the servant would answer, “No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.”
17This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they2:17 Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint; Masoretic Text people were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.
18But Samuel was ministering before the Lord—a boy wearing a linen ephod. 19Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. 20Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to2:20 Dead Sea Scrolls; Masoretic Text and asked from the Lord.” Then they would go home. 21And the Lord was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.
22Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25If one person sins against another, God2:25 Or the judges may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will intercede for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.
26And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.
Prophecy Against the House of Eli
27Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28I chose your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings presented by the Israelites. 29Why do you2:29 The Hebrew is plural. scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’
30“Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained. 31The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age, 32and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age. 33Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life.
34“ ‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you—they will both die on the same day. 35I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed one always. 36Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead, “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.” ’ ”
한나의 기도
1한나는 이렇게 기도하였다.
“여호와께서 내 마음을
기쁨으로 채우셨습니다.
여호와께서 나를 축복하시고
높여 주셨으므로 내가 원수들에게
뽐낼 수 있게 되었습니다.
주께서 나를 구해 주셨으니
나는 정말 기쁩니다.
2여호와처럼 거룩하신 이는
아무도 없습니다.
주밖에는 다른 신이 없고,
우리 하나님 같은
2:2 또는 ‘반석’보호자도 없습니다.
3“교만한 자들아,
너무 잘난 체하지 말아라.
거만한 자들아,
너무 우쭐대지 말아라.
여호와는 모든 것을
다 아시는 하나님이시다.
그가 너희 행위를 판단하시리라.
4용사의 활이 꺾이고
연약한 자가 강해졌구나.
5한때 배불리 먹던 자들은
이제 굶주리게 되었고,
지금까지 굶주리던 자들은
이제 주리지 않게 되었다.
자식을 낳지 못하던 자는
일곱을 낳았고
자녀를 많이 둔 자는
자식 없는 신세가 되었네.
6여호와는 죽이기도 하시고
살리기도 하시며,
사람을 2:6 또는 ‘음부’저 세상에 보내기도 하시고
다시 돌아오게도 하신다.
7여호와는 가난하게도 하시고
부하게도 하시며,
낮추기도 하시고 높이기도 하신다.
8그는 가난한 자를
티끌 가운데서 일으키시고
잿더미 가운데서도 일으켜
그들을 귀족처럼 대우하시고
영광의 자리에 앉게 하시는구나.
땅의 기초는 여호와의 것이다.
여호와께서
세계를 그 위에 세우셨네.
9“여호와는 성도들의 발걸음을
지키실 것이나,
악인은 어둠 속에서
말없이 사라지게 하시리라.
사람이 자기 힘만으로는
승리하지 못하는 법.
10여호와를 대적하는 자는
산산이 깨어질 것이니
그가 하늘의 벼락으로
그들을 치시리라.
여호와는 온 세계를 심판하시고
자기가 택한 왕에게 힘을 주시며
2:10 또는 ‘자기의 기름 부음을 받은 자의 뿔을 높이시리로다’기름 부어 세운 자에게
큰 영광을 주시리라.”
11그 후에 엘가나는 라마의 자기 집으로 돌아가고 어린 사무엘은 실로에 머물러 제사장 엘리 밑에서 여호와를 섬겼다.
엘리의 악한 아들들
12엘리의 아들들은 불량배였다. 그들은 여호와를 두렵게 여기지 않았고
13제사법에 관한 규정도 무시하였다. 사람들이 제사를 드리고 고기를 삶으면 그들은 하인을 보내 세 발 달린 쇠갈고리로
14고기 삶는 솥이나 냄비나 가마에 마구 찔러 넣어 갈고리에 걸려 나오는 것은 무엇이든지 가져오게 하였다. 그들은 실로에 제사 드리러 오는 모든 이스라엘 사람들에게 이런 무례한 짓을 하였다.
15이뿐 아니라 그 하인은 단에 제물의 기름을 태우기도 전에 와서 제사장은 삶은 고기를 원치 않는다고 하면서 제사장이 구워 먹을 날고기를 달라고 강요하였다.
16이때 만일 제사 드리는 사람이 “아직 기름을 단에 태우지도 않았는데 그럴 수는 없소. 기름을 태우고 나면 마음대로 가져가도록 하시오” 하면 그 하인은 “안 된다. 지금 당장 내놓아라. 그렇지 않으면 강제로 빼앗아 가겠다” 하고 으름장을 놓기가 일쑤였다.
17엘리의 아들들이 짓는 이 죄가 여호와께서 보시기에 매우 컸던 것은 그들이 여호와께 드리는 백성들의 제사를 멸시하였기 때문이었다.
실로에서 섬기는 사무엘
18사무엘은 아직 어렸지만 제사장처럼 고운 모시 2:18 앞판과뒷판으로된앞치마비슷한제사장의예복.에봇을 입고 여호와를 섬겼다.
19해마다 그의 어머니는 자기 남편과 함께 제사를 드리러 올 때 작은 겉옷을 만들어 가지고 와서 사무엘에게 입혀 주었다.
20그들이 집으로 돌아가기 전에 언제나 엘리는 엘가나와 한나에게 축복하고 그들이 여호와께 바친 이 아이를 대신할 다른 자녀를 그들에게 주도록 하나님께 기도하였다.
21그래서 여호와께서는 한나에게 복을 내리셔서 세 아들과 두 딸을 더 주셨으며 한편 사무엘도 여호와 앞에서 무럭무럭 자라고 있었다.
엘리 집안에 대한 예언
22이제 엘리는 나이가 많아 늙은 노인이 되었다. 그가 자기 주변에서 일어나는 모든 일과 자기 아들들이 성막 입구에서 일을 돕고 있는 젊은 여자들을 유혹하여 그들과 잠자리를 같이했다는 소문을 듣고
23자기 아들들을 불러 그들에게 말하였다. “너희가 어째서 이런 짓을 하였느냐? 나는 너희 악한 소행에 대해서 다 듣고 있다.
24내 아들들아, 너희가 이래서 되겠느냐? 내게 들리는 소문이 좋지 않다.
25사람이 사람에게 범죄하면 2:25 또는 ‘재판관’하나님이 그를 위해 중재하시지만 사람이 여호와께 범죄하면 누가 그를 위해 중재하겠느냐?” 그러나 그들은 자기 아버지의 권면을 듣고도 그 말에 귀를 기울이지 않았다. 이것은 여호와께서 이미 그들을 죽이기로 작정하셨기 때문이었다.
26어린 사무엘은 점점 자라면서 여호와와 사람들에게 더욱 총애를 받았다.
27어느 날 한 예언자가 엘리에게 와서 다음과 같은 여호와의 말씀을 전해 주었다. “너희 조상들이 이집트에서 노예 생활을 할 때 내가 그들에게 나타나지 않았느냐?
28내가 이스라엘 모든 지파 중에서 특별히 너의 조상 아론을 택하여 나의 제사장으로 삼고 그로 내 단에 제물을 드리게 하며 향을 피우게 하고 나를 섬길 때에 에봇을 입게 하지 않았느냐? 그리고 내가 그 희생의 제물을 너희 제사장들에게 주어 먹게 하였다.
29그런데 어째서 너희는 나에게 가져오는 다른 제물까지 그렇게 탐하느냐? 어째서 너는 나보다 너의 아들들을 더 소중히 여기느냐? 너희가 내 백성이 드리는 제물 중에서 가장 좋은 것으로 자신을 살찌게 하는구나!
30그러므로 이스라엘의 하나님 나 여호와가 말한다. 내가 전에 레위 자손인 너의 집안이 언제나 제사장으로 나를 섬기게 하겠다고 약속하였으나 이제 나는 절대로 그렇게 하지 않겠다. 나는 누구든지 나를 소중히 여기는 자를 소중히 여기고 나를 멸시하는 자를 멸시할 것이다.
31이제 내가 너의 가정과 집안의 젊은 사람들을 쳐서 제 명대로 살지 못하게 하고 네 집안에 노인이 하나도 없게 하겠다.
32내가 이스라엘 백성에게 준 복을 보고 너와 너의 가족은 부러워할 것이며 너희는 환난을 당하고 네 집안에는 영영 노인이 없을 것이다.
33또 살아 남는 자가 있어도 그가 네 눈을 멀게 하고 네 마음을 슬프게 할 것이며 너의 모든 자손들은 젊어서 죽게 될 것이다.
34그리고 홉니와 비느하스가 한날에 죽는 것을 보면 너는 내가 말한 것이 사실임을 알게 될 것이다.
35나는 나를 섬기고 내가 원하는 것을 행하는 충실한 제사장을 세울 것이다. 나는 그의 후손들을 축복할 것이며 그들은 내가 세운 왕 앞에서 항상 제사장으로 섬길 것이다.
36그때 네 후손 중에 살아 남은 자들은 그에게 찾아가서 돈과 먹을 것을 구걸하며 엎드려 ‘나에게도 제사장의 직분을 맡겨 먹는 것이라도 충분히 먹게 해 주십시오’ 하고 말할 것이다.”
