Samuel Anoints David
1The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”
2But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”
4Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”
5Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
David in Saul’s Service
14Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil16:14 Or and a harmful; similarly in verses 15, 16 and 23 spirit from the Lord tormented him.
15Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”
17So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.”
18One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with him.”
19Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” 20So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.
21David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. 22Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
23Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.
David, uns drept rege al lui Israel
1Domnul i‑a zis lui Samuel:
– Până când vei mai boci pentru Saul, de vreme ce Eu l‑am respins, ca să nu mai domnească peste Israel? Umple‑ți cornul cu untdelemn și du‑te acolo unde te trimit: la Ișai, betleemitul, pentru că pe unul din fiii săi Mi l‑am ales ca rege.
2Dar Samuel I‑a zis:
– Cum aș putea să plec? Saul va auzi lucrul acesta și mă va ucide.
Domnul i‑a răspuns:
– Să iei o juncană cu tine și să zici: „Am venit să aduc Domnului o jertfă.“ 3Invită la aducerea jertfei și pe Ișai, iar eu îți voi arăta ce să faci. Vei unge pentru Mine pe acela pe care ți‑l voi arăta.
4Samuel a făcut ceea ce‑i spusese Domnul și a venit la Betleem. Bătrânilor cetății le era frică să se întâlnească cu el.
Ei au întrebat:
– Vii cu pace?
5El a răspuns:
– Da, cu pace. Vin ca să aduc o jertfă Domnului. Sfințiți‑vă5 Vezi nota de la 7:1. și veniți cu mine la aducerea jertfei.
Samuel l‑a sfințit pe Ișai și pe fiii săi și i‑a invitat la aducerea jertfei. 6Când aceștia au sosit, Samuel l‑a văzut pe Eliab și s‑a gândit: „Cu siguranță unsul Domnului se află aici, înaintea Lui.“ 7Însă Domnul i‑a zis: „Nu te uita la înfățișarea sau la înălțimea staturii lui, pentru că l‑am respins, căci Domnul nu Se uită la ceea ce se uită omul. Omul se uită la înfățișare, pe când Domnul Se uită la inimă.“
8Atunci Ișai l‑a chemat pe Abinadab și l‑a pus să treacă prin fața lui Samuel.
El i‑a zis:
– Nici pe acesta nu l‑a ales Domnul.
9Apoi Ișai l‑a pus pe Șama să‑i treacă prin față, dar Samuel a zis:
– Nici pe acesta nu l‑a ales Domnul.
10Așa i‑a pus Ișai pe șapte din fiii săi să treacă prin fața lui Samuel, însă Samuel i‑a zis lui Ișai:
– Domnul nu i‑a ales nici pe aceștia.
11Apoi Samuel i‑a zis lui Ișai:
– Aceștia sunt toți fiii pe care îi ai?
Ișai i‑a răspuns:
– A mai rămas cel mai tânăr, dar iată că el paște turmele.
Samuel i‑a zis lui Ișai:
– Trimite după el și adu‑l, căci nu ne vom aduna în jurul mesei până nu vine aici.
12Ișai a trimis după el și a fost adus. El era roșcovan, cu ochi frumoși și plăcut la chip. Domnul i‑a zis lui Samuel: „Ridică‑te și unge‑l, căci el este!“
13Samuel a luat cornul cu untdelemn și l‑a uns în mijlocul fraților lui, iar Duhul Domnului a venit peste David, începând din ziua aceea. După toate acestea, Samuel s‑a ridicat și a plecat la Rama.
David, la curtea lui Saul
14Duhul Domnului S‑a îndepărtat de la Saul, și un duh rău14-16, 23 Sau: vătămător. de la Domnul îl chinuia.
15Slujitorii lui Saul i‑au zis:
– Iată că un duh rău de la Dumnezeu te chinuie. 16Să poruncească stăpânul nostru slujitorilor tăi, care stau înaintea ta, să caute un om care știe să cânte la liră. Atunci când duhul cel rău de la Dumnezeu va veni peste tine, el va cânta cu mâna lui și te vei simți mai bine.
17Saul le‑a zis slujitorilor săi:
– Găsiți‑mi un om care știe să cânte bine și aduceți‑l la mine.
18Atunci unul dintre tinerii slujitori a zis:
– Iată, l‑am văzut pe unul dintre fiii lui Ișai din Betleem, care este iscusit la cântat. Este un războinic viteaz, priceput la vorbire și cu o înfățișare plăcută, iar Domnul este cu el.
19Saul a trimis mesageri la Ișai, zicând:
– Trimite‑mi‑l pe David, fiul tău, cel care este cu turmele.
20Ișai a luat un măgar încărcat cu pâine, un burduf de vin și un ied pe care le‑a trimis lui Saul prin fiul său David. 21David a venit la Saul și s‑a înfățișat înaintea lui. Lui Saul i‑a plăcut foarte mult de David și l‑a luat să‑i poarte armele.
22Saul a trimis la Ișai să‑i spună:
– Dă‑i voie lui David să rămână în slujba mea, pentru că a găsit bunăvoință înaintea mea.22 Lit.: în ochii mei.
23Ori de câte ori venea duhul de la Dumnezeu asupra lui Saul, David lua lira și cânta. Atunci Saul avea parte de alinare, se simțea mai bine, iar duhul cel rău pleca de la el.
