Ben-Hadad Attacks Samaria
1Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it. 2He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: 3‘Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine.’ ”
4The king of Israel answered, “Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours.”
5The messengers came again and said, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: ‘I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children. 6But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.’ ”
7The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them, “See how this man is looking for trouble! When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him.”
8The elders and the people all answered, “Don’t listen to him or agree to his demands.”
9So he replied to Ben-Hadad’s messengers, “Tell my lord the king, ‘Your servant will do all you demanded the first time, but this demand I cannot meet.’ ” They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.
10Then Ben-Hadad sent another message to Ahab: “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful.”
11The king of Israel answered, “Tell him: ‘One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.’ ”
12Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking in their tents,20:12 Or in Sukkoth; also in verse 16 and he ordered his men: “Prepare to attack.” So they prepared to attack the city.
Ahab Defeats Ben-Hadad
13Meanwhile a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ”
14“But who will do this?” asked Ahab.
The prophet replied, “This is what the Lord says: ‘The junior officers under the provincial commanders will do it.’ ”
“And who will start the battle?” he asked.
The prophet answered, “You will.”
15So Ahab summoned the 232 junior officers under the provincial commanders. Then he assembled the rest of the Israelites, 7,000 in all. 16They set out at noon while Ben-Hadad and the 32 kings allied with him were in their tents getting drunk. 17The junior officers under the provincial commanders went out first.
Now Ben-Hadad had dispatched scouts, who reported, “Men are advancing from Samaria.”
18He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
19The junior officers under the provincial commanders marched out of the city with the army behind them 20and each one struck down his opponent. At that, the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-Hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with some of his horsemen. 21The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.
22Afterward, the prophet came to the king of Israel and said, “Strengthen your position and see what must be done, because next spring the king of Aram will attack you again.”
23Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they. 24Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers. 25You must also raise an army like the one you lost—horse for horse and chariot for chariot—so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they.” He agreed with them and acted accordingly.
26The next spring Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel. 27When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.
28The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Arameans think the Lord is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the Lord.’ ”
29For seven days they camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. The Israelites inflicted a hundred thousand casualties on the Aramean foot soldiers in one day. 30The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek, where the wall collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid in an inner room.
31His officials said to him, “Look, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.”
32Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says: ‘Please let me live.’ ”
The king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
33The men took this as a good sign and were quick to pick up his word. “Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!” they said.
“Go and get him,” the king said. When Ben-Hadad came out, Ahab had him come up into his chariot.
34“I will return the cities my father took from your father,” Ben-Hadad offered. “You may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.”
Ahab said, “On the basis of a treaty I will set you free.” So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.
A Prophet Condemns Ahab
35By the word of the Lord one of the company of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me with your weapon,” but he refused.
36So the prophet said, “Because you have not obeyed the Lord, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you.” And after the man went away, a lion found him and killed him.
37The prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him and wounded him. 38Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes. 39As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, “Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, ‘Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent20:39 That is, about 75 pounds or about 34 kilograms of silver.’ 40While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”
“That is your sentence,” the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”
41Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42He said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have set free a man I had determined should die.20:42 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them. Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people.’ ” 43Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

7Regele lui Israel i‑a chemat pe toți bătrânii7 Vezi nota de la 8:1. țării și le‑a zis:
– Să știți și să vedeți că acesta caută răul! Căci a trimis după soțiile mele, după fiii mei, după argintul meu și după aurul meu, și nu l‑am refuzat!
8Toți bătrânii și tot poporul i‑au răspuns:
– Nu‑l asculta și nu încuviința.
9Atunci Ahab le‑a zis mesagerilor lui Ben‑Hadad: „Spuneți‑i stăpânului meu, regele: «Voi face tot ceea ce i‑ai cerut robului tău prima dată, dar acest lucru nu‑l pot face!»“ Mesagerii au plecat și i‑au dat regelui Ben‑Hadad răspunsul lui Ahab. 10Ben‑Hadad i‑a trimis un alt mesaj lui Ahab și i‑a zis: „Dumnezeii să se poarte cu mine cu toată asprimea10 Formulă tipică de jurământ (lit.: Așa să‑mi facă dumnezeii și chiar mai mult). dacă praful Samariei va fi suficient să umple mâna întregului popor care mă urmează!“ 11Regele lui Israel a răspuns: „Spuneți‑i: «Cine încinge armele să nu se laude precum cel care le pune jos!»“11 Proverbul echivalent românesc ar fi: Să nu vinzi pielea ursului din pădure. 12Ben‑Hadad a primit acest mesaj în timp ce stătea la băut împreună cu regii, în tabără12 Sau: în Sucot., și le‑a spus slujitorilor săi: „Pregătiți‑vă!“ Și ei s‑au pregătit de atac împotriva cetății.
13Dar iată că un profet s‑a apropiat de Ahab, regele lui Israel, și i‑a zis:
– Așa vorbește Domnul: „Vezi toată această mulțime mare? Astăzi o voi da în mâinile tale și vei ști că Eu sunt Domnul!“
14Ahab a întrebat:
– Prin cine?
El a răspuns:
– Așa vorbește Domnul: „Prin slujitorii conducătorilor de provincii!“
Ahab a întrebat:
– Și cine va începe lupta?
El a răspuns:
– Tu!
15Ahab i‑a numărat pe slujitorii conducătorilor de provincii. Aceștia erau două sute treizeci și doi. Apoi a numărat tot poporul, pe toți fiii lui Israel. Aceștia erau șapte mii. 16Ei au ieșit pe la amiază, în timp ce Ben‑Hadad se îmbăta în tabără împreună cu cei treizeci și doi de regi care‑l ajutau. 17Mai întâi au ieșit slujitorii conducătorilor de provincii.
Ben‑Hadad a trimis niște oameni care l‑au înștiințat, zicând:
– Au ieșit niște bărbați din Samaria!
18El a zis:
– Dacă au ieșit pentru pace, prindeți‑i vii, iar dacă au ieșit pentru război, prindeți‑i tot vii!
19Slujitorii conducătorilor de provincii au ieșit din cetate împreună cu armata care‑i urma 20și fiecare și‑a lovit omul dinaintea lui. Arameii au luat‑o la fugă, iar Israel i‑a urmărit. Însă Ben‑Hadad a scăpat pe un cal împreună cu niște călăreți. 21Regele lui Israel a ieșit și a atacat caii și carele, provocându‑le arameilor o mare înfrângere.
Confruntarea dintre Israel și Aram: a doua victorie a lui Ahab
22Apoi, profetul s‑a apropiat de regele lui Israel și i‑a zis: „Du‑te și întărește‑te! Cercetează și vezi ce trebuie să faci, pentru că regele Aramului se va sui din nou împotriva ta în primăvara viitoare!“
23Slujitorii regelui Aramului i‑au spus acestuia: „Dumnezeul lor este un Dumnezeu al munților. De aceea au fost mai tari decât noi. Dar dacă ne vom lupta cu ei în podiș, cu siguranță vom fi mai tari decât ei. 24Fă lucrul acesta: îndepărtează pe fiecare din regi de la locul lor și pune căpetenii în locul acestora. 25Pregătește‑ți o armată la fel ca armata pe care ai pierdut‑o, cu tot atâția cai și tot atâtea care, și să ne luptăm cu ei în podiș. Atunci cu siguranță vom fi mai tari decât ei!“ El a ascultat de glasul lor și a făcut așa.
26Primăvara următoare, Ben‑Hadad i‑a strâns pe aramei și s‑a suit la Afek, ca să lupte împotriva lui Israel. 27Fiii lui Israel au fost mobilizați, au primit provizii și au mărșăluit ca să‑i întâmpine. Fiii lui Israel și‑au așezat tabăra în fața lor, ca două turme mici de capre, în vreme ce arameii umpleau țara.
28Un om al lui Dumnezeu s‑a apropiat de regele lui Israel și i‑a zis: „Așa vorbește Domnul: «Pentru că arameii au spus că Domnul este un Dumnezeu al munților, nu și un Dumnezeu al văilor, voi da toată această mulțime mare în mâinile tale și veți ști că Eu sunt Domnul!»“
29Timp de șapte zile au rămas în taberele lor unii în fața altora, iar în ziua a șaptea au început lupta. Fiii lui Israel au omorât o sută de mii de pedestrași aramei într‑o singură zi. 30Ceilalți au fugit în cetatea Afek, unde zidul s‑a prăbușit peste douăzeci și șapte de mii dintre ei. Ben‑Hadad a fugit în cetate și s‑a ascuns într‑o odaie interioară.
31Slujitorii săi i‑au zis: „Iată, am auzit că regii Casei lui Israel sunt îndurători. Dă‑ne voie să ne punem saci pe coapse, să ne legăm cu funii la cap și să ieșim la regele lui Israel! Poate că te va lăsa în viață.“
32Ei și‑au înfășurat saci pe coapse și s‑au legat cu funii la cap, după care s‑au dus la regele lui Israel și i‑au zis:
– Robul tău Ben‑Hadad zice: „Te rog, lasă‑mă în viață!“
Ahab a zis:
– Mai este încă în viață? Atunci este fratele meu!
33Bărbații au luat de bun augur răspunsul și s‑au grăbit să accepte, zicând:
– Da, fratele tău Ben‑Hadad!
Ahab a zis:
– Duceți‑vă și aduceți‑l.
Ben‑Hadad a venit la el, iar Ahab l‑a urcat în carul lui.
34Ben‑Hadad i‑a spus:
– Îți voi înapoia cetățile pe care tatăl meu le‑a luat de la tatăl tău și vei putea să‑ți faci piețe în Damasc, așa cum a făcut tatăl meu în Samaria.
Ahab a zis:
– Iar eu îți voi da drumul, încheind un legământ cu tine.
Astfel, după ce a încheiat un legământ cu el, Ahab i‑a dat drumul.
35Unul din fiii profeților35 Prin fiu se înțelege calitatea de membru al grupului profeților, grup care avea probabil și anumiți mentori, cum au fost Samuel, Ilie, Elisei. i‑a spus confratelui său prin Cuvântul Domnului: „Lovește‑mă, te rog!“ Dar acesta n‑a vrut să‑l lovească. 36„Pentru că n‑ai ascultat de Cuvântul Domnului, i‑a zis profetul, când vei pleca de la mine, te va omorî un leu.“ După ce a plecat de la el, a întâlnit un leu care l‑a omorât. 37Profetul a găsit un alt om și i‑a spus: „Lovește‑mă, te rog!“ Acel om l‑a lovit și l‑a rănit. 38Apoi profetul s‑a dus și l‑a așteptat pe rege lângă drum. El s‑a deghizat acoperindu‑și ochii cu un bandaj.
39Când regele a trecut pe acolo, el a strigat și i‑a spus regelui:
– În timp ce robul tău era în toiul bătăliei, un bărbat a venit și mi‑a adus un captiv, zicându‑mi: „Păzește‑l pe acest om. Dacă va scăpa, vei răspunde cu viața pentru el sau vei plăti un talant39 Aproximativ 30 kg. de argint!“ 40Dar pe când robul tău făcea câte ceva încoace și încolo, el a dispărut.
Regele lui Israel i‑a răspuns:
– Aceasta îți este condamnarea. Tu însuți ai rostit‑o.
41Îndată profetul și‑a dat jos bandajul de pe ochi, iar regele lui Israel l‑a recunoscut că era dintre profeți.
42El i‑a zis regelui:
– Așa vorbește Domnul: „Fiindcă i‑ai dat drumul omului pe care îl hotărâsem pentru nimicire42 Vezi nota de la 9:21., vei răspunde cu viața ta pentru viața lui și cu poporul tău pentru poporul lui.“
43Regele lui Israel s‑a dus și a intrat supărat și mâniat în palatul său din Samaria.
