Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols
1Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3But whoever loves God is known by God.8:2,3 An early manuscript and another ancient witness think they have knowledge do not yet know as they ought to know. 3 But whoever loves truly knows.
4So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
7But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
9Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.
Offer till avgudar
1När det sedan gäller kött som har offrats till avgudar, vet vi att vi alla har kunskap. Men kunskap ger högfärd, medan kärleken bygger upp. 2Den som anser sig veta något, vet ändå inte vad han borde veta. 3Men den som älskar Gud är känd av honom.
4När det gäller frågan om man får äta kött som har offrats till avgudar, så vet vi att en avgud inte är något i världen, och att det bara finns en enda Gud.8:4 Paulus verkar dels citera, dels kommentera vissa korinthiers uttryck om avgudar. 5Även om det finns så kallade gudar, i himlen eller på jorden – och det finns ett stort antal av dessa gudar och herrar – 6så finns det för oss bara en Gud, Fadern, som är upphovet till allting och i vilken vi lever, och bara en Herre, Jesus Kristus, genom vilken allting och vi själva är till.
7Men alla har inte denna kunskap. Några är fortfarande så vana vid avgudar att de äter kött som om det hade offrats till avgudar och orenar så sina egna svaga samveten. 8Maten för oss inte närmare Gud. Vi blir inte sämre om vi låter bli att äta, och inte heller bättre om vi äter. 9Men se till att den frihet ni anser er ha inte får en osäker troende att vackla. 10Om någon med osäkert samvete ser dig, som har kunskapen, äta kött i ett avgudatempel,8:10 Man kunde bli inbjuden av sina vänner till en vanlig måltid i templet. Men köttet var alltså offrat till avgudar innan. kan han ju bli styrkt så att han äter offerkött. 11Genom din kunskap går då en svag troende förlorad, din egen bror eller syster som Kristus har dött för! 12När ni på det sättet syndar mot era trossyskon och lurar dem att gå emot sina egna osäkra samveten, syndar ni mot Kristus själv. 13Alltså: Om min mat får min bror eller syster att falla, så avstår jag hellre för evigt från att äta kött, för att inte orsaka någons fall.
