Boaz Marries Ruth
1Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there. Right then, the family protector he had talked about came by. Then Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend. Sit down.” So the man went over and sat down.
2Boaz brought ten of the elders of the town together. He said, “Sit down here.” So they did. 3Then he spoke to the family protector. He said, “Naomi has come back from Moab. She’s selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek. 4I thought I should bring the matter to your attention. I suggest that you buy the land. Buy it while those sitting here and the elders of my people are looking on as witnesses. If you are willing to buy it back, do it. But if you aren’t, tell me. Then I’ll know. No one has the right to buy it back except you. And I’m next in line.”
“I’ll buy it,” he said.
5Then Boaz said, “When you buy the property from Naomi, you must also marry Ruth. She is from Moab and is the dead man’s widow. So you must marry her. That’s because his property must continue to belong to his family.”
6When the family protector heard that, he said, “Then I can’t buy the land. If I did, I might put my own property in danger. So you buy it. I can’t do it.”
7In earlier times in Israel, there was a certain practice. It was used when family land was bought back and changed owners. The practice made the sale final. One person would take his sandal off and give it to the other. That was how people in Israel showed that a business matter had been settled.
8So the family protector said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he took his sandal off.
9Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses. You have seen that I have bought land from Naomi. I have bought all the property that had belonged to Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. 10I’ve also taken Ruth, who is from Moab, to become my wife. She is Mahlon’s widow. I’ve decided to marry her so the dead man’s name will stay with his property. Now his name won’t disappear from his family line or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses!”
11Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, “We are witnesses. The woman is coming into your home. May the Lord make her like Rachel and Leah. Together they built up the family of Israel. May you be an important person in Ephrathah. May you be famous in Bethlehem. 12The Lord will give you children through this young woman. May your family be like the family of Perez. He was the son Tamar had by Judah.”
Naomi Gains a Son
13So Boaz married Ruth. Then he slept with her. The Lord blessed her so that she became pregnant. And she had a son. 14The women said to Naomi, “We praise the Lord. Today he has provided a family protector for you. May this child become famous all over Israel! 15He will make your life new again. He’ll take care of you when you are old. He’s the son of your very own daughter-in-law. She loves you. She is better to you than seven sons.”
16Then Naomi took the child in her arms and took care of him. 17The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse. Jesse was the father of David.
18Here is the family line of Perez.
Perez was the father of Hezron.
19Hezron was the father of Ram.
Ram was the father of Amminadab.
20Amminadab was the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
21Salmon was the father of Boaz.
Boaz was the father of Obed.
22Obed was the father of Jesse.
And Jesse was the father of David.
Boaz se căsătorește cu Rut
1Boaz s‑a suit la poarta cetății și s‑a așezat acolo. Tocmai atunci trecea cel ce avea drept de răscumpărare, cel despre care vorbise Boaz.
Boaz i‑a zis:
– Prietene, întoarce‑te și așază‑te aici!
Acesta s‑a întors și s‑a așezat.
2Boaz a adus și zece bărbați dintre bătrânii2 Șefi de familii și de clanuri, recunoscuți ca autoritate la toate popoarele orientale. Ei aveau rol de (1) judecători în cadrul comunității locale (Deut. 19:12; 21:1-9, 18-21; 22:13-21; 25:5-10) sau de (2) lideri militari (Ios. 8:10). Ca instituție, Sfatul Bătrânilor este atestat în special în perioada monarhiei, cu rol de consiliu (2 Sam. 3:17; 5:3; 17:4; 1 Regi 20:7). cetății și a zis:
– Așezați‑vă aici.
Ei s‑au așezat.
3Apoi i‑a zis celui cu drept de răscumpărare:
– Naomi, care s‑a întors din câmpiile Moabului, a scos la vânzare parcela de pământ care era a fratelui nostru, Elimelek. 4M‑am gândit să te anunț și să‑ți spun: cumpăr‑o acum de față cu locuitorii și de față cu bătrânii poporului meu. Dacă vrei deci s‑o răscumperi, răscumpăr‑o, dar dacă nu vrei s‑o răscumperi, atunci spune‑mi, ca să știu, căci nu este nimeni înaintea ta cu drept de răscumpărare, iar după tine urmez eu.
Acesta a răspuns:
– O voi răscumpăra eu.
5Boaz a zis:
– În ziua în care vei cumpăra parcela de la Naomi, va trebui s‑o răscumperi și pe moabita Rut5 Sau: va trebui să răscumperi și parcela moabitei Rut., soția celui ce a murit, ca să păstrezi numele mortului în cadrul moștenirii lui.
6Atunci cel ce avea drept de răscumpărare i‑a răspuns:
– Nu pot s‑o răscumpăr pentru mine, ca nu cumva să‑mi ruinez propria moștenire. Răscumpăr‑o tu. Poți lua tu dreptul meu de răscumpărare, căci eu nu pot s‑o răscumpăr.
7Pe vremuri, în Israel, pentru a întări toate rânduielile privitoare la răscumpărare și la schimbarea dreptului de răscumpărare, unul își scotea sandaua și i‑o dădea celuilalt. Aceasta slujea drept mărturie în Israel.
8Deci cel ce avea drept de răscumpărare i‑a zis lui Boaz:
– Cumpăr‑o tu.
Apoi și‑a scos sandaua.
9Atunci Boaz le‑a zis bătrânilor și întregului popor:
– Astăzi sunteți martori că am cumpărat de la Naomi tot ce a aparținut lui Elimelek, lui Chilion și lui Mahlon. 10De asemenea, pe moabita Rut, văduva lui Mahlon, am cumpărat‑o de soție, ca să păstrez numele mortului în cadrul moștenirii lui, astfel încât să nu se șteargă numele acestuia dintre frații lui și din cetatea sa. Voi sunteți martori astăzi!
11Tot poporul care era la poartă și bătrânii i‑au răspuns:
– Suntem martori. S‑o facă Domnul pe femeia care intră în casa ta ca pe Rahela și ca pe Lea care, împreună, au zidit Casa lui Israel. Să‑ți sporească puterea în Efrata și să‑ți faci un nume în Betleem! 12Fie familia ta, prin sămânța pe care ți‑o va da Domnul din această tânără, ca familia lui Pereț care i s‑a născut lui Iuda din Tamar.

13Boaz a luat‑o pe Rut și ea a devenit soția lui. El a intrat la ea13 Eufemism ebraic cu sensul de a avea relații sexuale. și Domnul a dat rod pântecului ei, astfel că aceasta a născut un fiu. 14Femeile i‑au zis lui Naomi: „Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Cel Ce nu te‑a lăsat astăzi fără un răscumpărător. Fie ca numele lui să ajungă vestit în Israel! 15El îți va fi o înviorare pentru suflet și un sprijin la bătrânețe, căci l‑a născut nora ta care te iubește și care prețuiește pentru tine mai mult decât șapte fii.“
16Naomi a luat copilul, l‑a pus în poală și i‑a fost acestuia ca o doică. 17Vecinele i‑au pus numele Obed, zicând: „I s‑a născut un fiu lui Naomi.“ El a fost tatăl lui Ișai, tatăl lui David.
18Aceștia sunt descendenții lui Pereț:
din Pereț s‑a născut Hețron,
19din Hețron s‑a născut Ram,
din Ram s‑a născut Aminadab,
20din Aminadab s‑a născut Nahșon,
din Nahșon s‑a născut Salmon,
21din Salmon s‑a născut Boaz,
din Boaz s‑a născut Obed,
22din Obed s‑a născut Ișai,
iar din Ișai s‑a născut David.
