Ruth Meets Boaz in the Grain Field
1Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side of the family. The relative’s name was Boaz. He was a very important man from the family of Elimelek.
2Ruth, who was from Moab, spoke to Naomi. Ruth said, “Let me go out to the fields. I’ll pick up the grain that has been left. I’ll do it behind anyone who is pleased with me.”
Naomi said to her, “My daughter, go ahead.” 3So Ruth went out to a field and began to pick up grain. She worked behind those cutting and gathering the grain. As it turned out, she was working in a field that belonged to Boaz. He was from the family of Elimelek.
4Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem. He greeted those cutting and gathering the grain. He said, “May the Lord be with you!”
“And may the Lord bless you!” they replied.
5Boaz spoke to the man in charge of his workers. He asked, “Who does that young woman belong to?”
6The man replied, “She’s from Moab. She came back from there with Naomi. 7The young woman said, ‘Please let me walk behind the workers. Let me pick up the grain that is left.’ She came into the field. She has kept on working here from morning until now. She took only one short rest in the shade.”
8So Boaz said to Ruth, “Dear woman, listen to me. Don’t pick up grain in any other field. Don’t go anywhere else. Stay here with the women who work for me. 9Keep your eye on the field where the men are cutting grain. Walk behind the women who are gathering it. Pick up the grain that is left. I’ve told the men not to bother you. When you are thirsty, go and get a drink. Take water from the jars the men have filled.”
10When Ruth heard that, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, “Why are you being so kind to me? In fact, why are you even noticing me? I’m from another country.”
11Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about you. I’ve heard about everything you have done for your mother-in-law since your husband died. I know that you left your father and mother. I know that you left your country. You came to live with people you didn’t know before. 12May the Lord reward you for what you have done. May the Lord, the God of Israel, bless you richly. You have come to him to find safety under his care.”
13“Sir, I hope you will continue to be kind to me,” Ruth said. “You have made me feel safe. You have spoken kindly to me. And I’m not even as important as one of your servants!”
14When it was time to eat, Boaz spoke to Ruth again. “Come over here,” he said. “Have some bread. Dip it in the wine vinegar.”
She sat down with the workers. Then Boaz offered her some grain that had been cooked. She ate all she wanted. She even had some left over. 15Ruth got up to pick up more grain. Then Boaz gave orders to his men. He said, “Let her take some stalks from what the women have tied up. Don’t tell her she can’t. 16Even pull out some stalks for her. Leave them for her to pick up. Don’t tell her she shouldn’t do it.”
17So Ruth picked up grain in the field until evening. Then she separated the barley from the straw. The barley weighed 30 pounds. 18She carried it back to town. Her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out the food left over from the lunch Boaz had given her. She gave it to Naomi.
19Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you pick up grain today? Where did you work? May the man who noticed you be blessed!”
Then Ruth told her about the man whose field she had worked in. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said.
20“May the Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “The Lord is still being kind to those who are living and those who are dead.” She continued, “That man is a close relative of ours. He’s one of our family protectors.”
21Then Ruth, who was from Moab, said, “He told me more. He even said, ‘Stay with my workers until they have finished bringing in all my grain.’ ”
22Naomi replied to her daughter-in-law Ruth. She said, “That will be good for you, my daughter. Go with the women who work for him. You might be harmed if you go to someone else’s field.”
23So Ruth stayed close to the women who worked for Boaz as she picked up grain. She worked until the time when all the barley and wheat had been harvested. And she lived with her mother-in-law.
Rut îl întâlnește pe Boaz

2Moabita Rut i‑a zis lui Naomi:

Ea i‑a răspuns:
– Du‑te, fiica mea.
3Ea s‑a dus și, ajungând pe un ogor, a început să culeagă spicele rămase în urma secerătorilor. S‑a nimerit ca ogorul acela să fie tocmai al lui Boaz, din clanul lui Elimelek.
4Chiar atunci Boaz a sosit din Betleem și le‑a zis secerătorilor:
– Domnul să fie cu voi!
Ei i‑au răspuns:
– Domnul să te binecuvânteze.
5Apoi l‑a întrebat pe slujitorul care supraveghea secerătorii:
– A cui este tânăra aceasta?
6Slujitorul care supraveghea secerătorii i‑a răspuns:
– Aceasta este tânăra moabită care s‑a întors cu Naomi din câmpiile Moabului. 7Ea mi‑a zis: „Te rog, dă‑mi voie să culeg și să strâng dintre snopi spicele rămase în urma secerătorilor!“ Și de azi dimineață, de când a venit, a stat în picioare până acum și nu s‑a odihnit decât pentru puțin timp, în adăpost.7 Lit.: în casă.
8Boaz i‑a zis lui Rut:
– Ascultă‑mă, fiică! Să nu mergi la cules pe un alt ogor și să nu pleci de aici. Ține‑te după slujnicele mele. 9Uită‑te unde vor secera pe ogor și du‑te după ele. Voi porunci slujitorilor să nu se atingă de tine. Iar când ți‑e sete, poți să mergi la vase și să bei din ceea ce au scos slujitorii.
10Atunci ea s‑a aruncat cu fața la pământ, s‑a închinat și i‑a zis:
– Cum de am găsit bunăvoință înaintea ta10, 13 Lit.: în ochii tăi., ca să mă iei în seamă pe mine, o străină10 Sau: una care nu sunt de băgat în seamă.?
11Boaz a răspuns:
– Mi s‑a spus tot ce‑ai făcut pentru soacra ta după moartea soțului tău, cum ai părăsit pe tatăl tău și pe mama ta și țara în care te‑ai născut, ca să vii la un popor pe care nu‑l cunoșteai dinainte. 12Domnul să‑ți răsplătească fapta și răsplata să‑ți fie deplină din partea Domnului, Dumnezeul lui Israel, sub aripile Căruia ai venit să te adăpostești!
13Ea a zis:
– Să găsesc bunăvoință înaintea ta și pe mai departe, stăpânul meu, căci tu m‑ai mângâiat și i‑ai vorbit roabei tale pe placul inimii ei, deși eu nu sunt nici măcar ca una dintre roabele tale.
14La ora mesei, Boaz i‑a zis lui Rut:
– Apropie‑te, mănâncă din pâine și înmoaie‑ți bucata în oțet.
Ea s‑a așezat lângă secerători, iar el a servit‑o cu boabe prăjite. Ea a mâncat, s‑a săturat și i‑a mai și rămas.
15Apoi, când ea s‑a ridicat să mai culeagă, Boaz le‑a poruncit slujitorilor săi, zicând:
– Lăsați‑o să culeagă chiar și dintre snopi, fără s‑o umiliți. 16Ba chiar scoateți‑i spice din snopi și aruncați‑i‑le pe jos, ca să le poată culege și n‑o dojeniți.
17Rut a cules spice de pe ogor până seara, a bătut ce a cules și a strâns17 Lit.: și a fost. aproape o efă17 O efă măsura aproximativ 22 l. de orz. 18A luat ceea ce strânsese și s‑a dus în cetate, iar soacra sa a văzut cât culesese. Ea i‑a dat lui Naomi și ceea ce‑i rămăsese după ce se săturase la masă.
19Atunci soacra ei a întrebat‑o:
– Unde ai cules astăzi și unde ai lucrat? Binecuvântat să fie cel ce te‑a luat în seamă!
Rut i‑a istorisit soacrei sale la cine a lucrat și i‑a zis:
– Numele bărbatului la care am lucrat astăzi este Boaz.
20Naomi i‑a zis nurorii sale:
– Binecuvântat să fie el de Domnul, Cel Care20 Din punct de vedere gramatical referentul poate fi și Boaz. nu Și‑a părăsit îndurarea20 Vezi nota de la 1:8. față de noi, cei vii, și față de cei ce au murit!
Apoi Naomi i‑a zis:
– Bărbatul acesta este ruda noastră, dintre cei cu drept de răscumpărare20 Ebr.: goel (rudă cu drept de răscumpărare). Ruda cu drept de răscumpărare avea obligația, prin Lege, de a‑și proteja rudele aflate în nevoie: (1) de a ridica un urmaș fratelui său, dacă acesta a murit fără a lăsa urmași – primul fiu născut moștenea numele și averea fratelui defunct (Deut. 25:5-10); (2) de a răscumpăra pământul pe care o rudă mai săracă l‑a vândut în afara familiei (Lev. 25:25-28); (3) de a răscumpăra o rudă care s‑a vândut ca sclavă, din cauza sărăciei (Lev. 25:47-49); (4) de a răzbuna uciderea unei rude (Num. 35:19-21). asupra noastră.
21Moabita Rut i‑a zis:
– El mi‑a spus: „Stai aproape de slujitorii mei până vor termina tot ce au de secerat.“
22Naomi i‑a răspuns nurorii sale Rut:
– Este bine, fiica mea, să lucrezi cu slujnicele lui și să nu dea alții peste tine pe un alt ogor.
23Astfel, Rut a stat aproape de slujnicele lui Boaz și a cules până când s‑a încheiat seceratul orzului și al grâului. Ea locuia împreună cu soacra ei.
