Peace and Hope
1We have been made right with God because of our faith. Now we have peace with him because of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Through faith in Jesus we have received God’s grace. In that grace we stand. We are full of joy because we expect to share in God’s glory. 3And that’s not all. We are full of joy even when we suffer. We know that our suffering gives us the strength to go on. 4The strength to go on produces character. Character produces hope. 5And hope will never bring us shame. That’s because God’s love has been poured into our hearts. This happened through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
6At just the right time Christ died for ungodly people. He died for us when we had no power of our own. 7It is unusual for anyone to die for a godly person. Maybe someone would be willing to die for a good person. 8But here is how God has shown his love for us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9The blood of Christ has made us right with God. So we are even more sure that Jesus will save us from God’s anger. 10Once we were God’s enemies. But we have been brought back to him because his Son has died for us. Now that God has brought us back, we are even more secure. We know that we will be saved because Christ lives. 11And that is not all. We are full of joy in God because of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of him, God has brought us back to himself.
Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ
12Sin entered the world because one man sinned. And death came because of sin. Everyone sinned, so death came to all people.
13Before the law was given, sin was in the world. This is certainly true. But people are not judged for sin when there is no law. 14Death ruled from the time of Adam to the time of Moses. Death ruled even over those who did not sin as Adam did. He broke God’s command. But Adam also became a pattern of the Messiah. The Messiah was the one who was going to come.
15God’s gift can’t be compared with Adam’s sin. Many people died because of the sin of that one man. But it was even more sure that God’s grace would also come through one man. That man is Jesus Christ. God’s gift of grace was more than enough for the whole world. 16The result of God’s gift is different from the result of Adam’s sin. That one sin brought God’s judgment. But after many sins, God’s gift made people right with him. 17One man sinned, and death ruled over all people because of his sin. What will happen is even more sure than this. Those who receive the rich supply of God’s grace will rule with Christ. They will rule in his kingdom. They have received God’s gift and have been made right with him. This will happen because of what the one man, Jesus Christ, has done.
18So one man’s sin brought guilt to all people. In the same way, one right act made people right with God. That one right act gave life to all people. 19Many people were made sinners because one man did not obey. But one man did obey. That is why many people will be made right with God.
20The law was given so that sin would increase. But where sin increased, God’s grace increased even more. 21Sin ruled and brought death. But grace rules in the lives of those who are right with God. The grace of God brings eternal life. That’s because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done.
1그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다는 인정을 받아 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통해 하나님과 5:1 어떤 사본에는 ‘화평을 누리자’화목하게 되었습니다.
2그리고 우리는 그분을 통해 오늘날 우리가 누리고 있는 이런 은혜를 믿음으로 경험하게 되었습니다. 그래서 우리는 하나님의 영광에 참여할 희망 가운데서 기뻐하고 있습니다.
3이것뿐만 아니라 우리가 고난 중에서도 기뻐하는 것은 고난은 인내를,
4인내는 연단된 인격을, 연단된 인격은 희망을 갖게 한다는 것을 알기 때문입니다.
5이 희망은 우리에게 실망을 주지 않습니다. 그것은 하나님이 우리에게 주신 성령으로 우리 마음에 그분의 사랑을 부어 주셨기 때문입니다.
6우리가 아직 무력한 상태에 있을 때에 그리스도께서 우리 죄인들을 위해 죽으셨습니다.
7혹시 선한 사람을 위해 죽겠다고 나서는 사람은 있을는지 몰라도 의로운 사람을 위해 죽는 사람은 거의 없습니다.
8그러나 우리가 아직 죄인이었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위해 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 사랑을 나타내셨습니다.
9이제 우리가 그리스도의 피로 의롭다는 인정을 받았으니 틀림없이 그분을 통해 하나님의 5:9 원문에는 ‘진노’무서운 형벌에서 구원을 받을 것입니다.
10우리가 하나님과 원수 되었을 때 그리스도의 죽으심으로 하나님과 화목하게 되었다면 화목을 이룬 우리가 그의 살으심으로 구원받게 될 것은 뻔한 일입니다.
11그러나 이것이 전부가 아닙니다. 우리를 하나님과 화목하게 하신 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통해 우리는 하나님 안에서 기쁨도 누리고 있는 것입니다.
아담과 그리스도와의 대조
12한 사람을 통해 죄가 이 세상에 들어왔고 죄를 통해 죽음이 온 것처럼 모든 사람이 죄를 지었기 때문에 온 인류에게 죽음이 퍼지게 되었습니다.
13율법이 있기 전에도 세상에 죄가 있었으나 그 때는 율법이 없어서 죄를 죄로 여기지 않았습니다.
14그럼에도 불구하고 죽음은 아담으로부터 모세에 이르기까지 아담이 지은 죄를 짓지 않은 사람들까지 지배하였습니다. 아담은 5:14 또는 ‘오실 자의 표상’오실 그리스도의 모형이었습니다.
15그러나 하나님이 거저 주시는 선물은 아담이 지은 죄와 같지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 아담 한 사람이 지은 죄로 많은 사람이 죽었지만 하나님의 은혜와 한 사람 예수 그리스도의 은혜의 선물은 더 많은 사람에게 넘쳤기 때문입니다.
16또 거저 주시는 이 선물은 한 사람의 범죄로 인해 생긴 결과와 같지 않습니다. 한 사람이 지은 죄로 모든 사람이 죄인이라는 심판을 받게 되었으나 하나님이 거저 주시는 은혜의 선물로 많은 죄인들이 의롭다는 인정을 받게 되었기 때문입니다.
17한 사람이 지은 죄로 죽음이 사람을 지배하였으나 하나님의 풍성한 은혜와 의의 선물을 받는 모든 사람들은 한 분 예수 그리스도를 통해 생명을 얻게 되었습니다.
18그래서 한 사람의 범죄로 모든 사람이 죄인이라는 판정을 받게 된 것처럼 5:18 또는 ‘한 의로운 행동’한 사람의 의로운 행동으로 모든 사람이 의롭다는 인정을 받아 생명을 누리게 되었습니다.
19한 사람이 순종치 않으므로 많은 사람이 죄인이 된 것같이 한 사람의 순종으로 많은 사람이 의롭게 될 것입니다.
20율법이 들어와서 범죄가 늘어나게 되었으나 죄가 늘어난 곳에는 은혜도 더욱 풍성하였습니다.
21그래서 죄가 죽음이란 수단으로 군림하게 된 것처럼 하나님의 은혜는 의로 군림하여 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통해 우리를 영원한 생명으로 인도하게 되었습니다.
