Psalm 14
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1Foolish people say in their hearts,
“There is no God.”
They do all kinds of horrible and evil things.
No one does anything good.
2The Lord looks down from heaven
on all people.
He wants to see if there are any who understand.
He wants to see if there are any who trust in God.
3All of them have turned away.
They have all become evil.
No one does anything good,
no one at all.
4Do all these people who do evil know nothing?
They eat up my people as if they were eating bread.
They never call out to the Lord.
5But just look at them! They are filled with terror
because God is among those who do right.
6You who do evil keep poor people from succeeding.
But the Lord is their place of safety.
7How I pray that the God who saves Israel will come out of Zion!
Then the Lord will bless his people with great success again.
So let the people of Jacob be filled with joy! Let Israel be glad!
1Een psalm van David voor de koordirigent.
Een dwaas zegt bij zichzelf:
‘Er bestaat helemaal geen God.’
De mensen begaan de ergste misdaden.
Niemand doet wat goed is.
2Vanuit de hemel kijkt de Here
op de mensen neer.
Hij zoekt
of er nog één verstandig mens bij is,
iemand die Hem zoekt.
3Maar alle mensen
zijn van Hem afgedwaald,
met elkaar zijn zij het spoor bijster.
Er is er zelfs niet één
die doet wat goed is.
4Weten zij het dan niet,
al die zondaars,
al die mensen die van anderen niets heel laten?
Geen van hen zoekt de Here.
5Opeens krijgen zij de schrik te pakken,
paniek overvalt hun:
het blijkt dat God de zijnen terzijde staat.
6Uiteindelijk kunnen zij tegen de arme mensen toch niet op,
omdat de Here hen beschermt.
7Als Israël nu eens werd gered vanuit Jeruzalem!
Dat zal ook gebeuren:
wanneer eens de Here het volk redt,
zal Jakob juichen
en heel Israël van vreugde zingen.
