Zelophehad’s Daughters
1The daughters of Zelophehad belonged to the family groups of Manasseh. Zelophehad was the son of Hepher. Hepher was the son of Gilead. Gilead was the son of Makir. Makir was the son of Manasseh. And Manasseh was the son of Joseph. The names of Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They approached 2the entrance to the tent of meeting. There they stood in front of Moses and Eleazar the priest. The leaders and the whole community were there too. Zelophehad’s daughters said, 3“Our father died in the Sinai Desert. But he wasn’t one of the men who followed Korah. He wasn’t one of those who joined together against the Lord. Our father died because of his own sin. He didn’t leave any sons. 4Why should our father’s name disappear from his family just because he didn’t have a son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
5So Moses brought their case to the Lord. 6The Lord said to him, 7“What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property. Give them a share among their father’s relatives. Give their father’s property to them.
8“Say to the Israelites, ‘Suppose a man dies who doesn’t have a son. Then give his property to his daughter. 9Suppose the man doesn’t have a daughter. Then give his property to his brothers. 10Suppose the man doesn’t have any brothers. Then give his property to his father’s brothers. 11Suppose his father doesn’t have any brothers. Then give his property to the nearest male relative in his family group. It will belong to him. That is what the law will require of the Israelites. It is just as the Lord commanded me.’ ”
Joshua Becomes Israel’s New Leader
12Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range. See the land I have given the Israelites. 13After you have seen it, you too will join the members of your family who have already died. You will die, just as your brother Aaron did. 14The community refused to obey me at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the Desert of Zin. At that time, you and Aaron did not obey my command. You did not honor me in front of them as the holy God.”
15Moses spoke to the Lord. He said, 16“Lord, you are the God who gives life and breath to all living things. Please put someone in charge of this community. 17Have that person lead them and take care of them. Then your people won’t be like sheep without a shepherd.”
18So the Lord said to Moses, “Joshua, the son of Nun, has the ability to be a wise leader. Get him and place your hand on him. 19Have him stand in front of Eleazar the priest and the whole community. Put him in charge while everyone is watching. 20Give him some of your authority. Then the whole community of Israel will obey him. 21Joshua will stand in front of Eleazar the priest. Eleazar will help him make decisions. Eleazar will get help from me by using the Urim. Joshua and the whole community of Israel must not make any move at all unless I command them to.”
22Moses did just as the Lord commanded him. He got Joshua and had him stand in front of Eleazar the priest and the whole community. 23Then Moses placed his hands on Joshua. And he put him in charge of the people. He did just as the Lord had directed through Moses.
Las hijas de Zelofejad
27:1-11 – Nm 36:1-12
1Majlá, Noa, Joglá, Milca y Tirsá pertenecían a los clanes de Manasés hijo de José, pues eran hijas de Zelofejad hijo de Héfer, hijo de Galaad, hijo de Maquir, hijo de Manasés. Las cinco se acercaron 2a la entrada de la Tienda de reunión, para hablar con Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar, y con los jefes de toda la comunidad. Les dijeron: 3«Nuestro padre murió sin dejar hijos, pero no por haber participado en la rebelión de Coré contra el Señor. Murió en el desierto por su propio pecado. 4¿Será borrado de su clan el nombre de nuestro padre por el solo hecho de no haber dejado hijos varones? Nosotras somos sus hijas. ¡Danos una heredad entre los parientes de nuestro padre!»
5Moisés le presentó al Señor el caso de ellas, 6y el Señor le respondió: 7«Lo que piden las hijas de Zelofejad es algo justo, así que debes darles una propiedad entre los parientes de su padre. Traspásales a ellas la heredad de su padre.
8»Además, diles a los israelitas: “Cuando un hombre muera sin dejar hijos, su heredad será traspasada a su hija. 9Si no tiene hija, sus hermanos recibirán la herencia. 10Si no tiene hermanos, se entregará la herencia a los hermanos de su padre. 11Si su padre no tiene hermanos, se entregará la herencia al pariente más cercano de su clan, para que tome posesión de ella. Este será el procedimiento legal que seguirán los israelitas, tal como yo se lo ordené a Moisés”».
Anuncio de la muerte de Moisés
12El Señor le dijo a Moisés:
―Sube al monte Abarín y contempla desde allí la tierra que les he dado a los israelitas. 13Después de que la hayas contemplado, partirás de este mundo para reunirte con tus antepasados, como tu hermano Aarón. 14En el desierto de Zin, cuando la comunidad se puso a reclamar, vosotros dos me desobedecisteis, pues al sacar agua de la roca no reconocisteis ante el pueblo mi santidad.
Esas aguas de Meribá están en Cades, en el desierto de Zin.
Moisés pide un líder para Israel
15Moisés le respondió al Señor:
16―Dígnate, Señor, Dios de toda la humanidad,27:16 toda la humanidad. Lit. los espíritus de toda carne. nombrar un jefe sobre esta comunidad, 17uno que los dirija en sus campañas, que los lleve a la guerra y los traiga de vuelta a casa. Así el pueblo del Señor no se quedará como rebaño sin pastor.
18El Señor le dijo a Moisés:
―Toma a Josué hijo de Nun, que es un hombre de gran espíritu.27:18 de gran espíritu. Alt. en quien mora el Espíritu. Pon tus manos sobre él, 19y haz que se presente ante el sacerdote Eleazar y ante toda la comunidad. En presencia de ellos le entregarás el mando. 20Lo investirás con algunas de tus atribuciones, para que toda la comunidad israelita le obedezca. 21Se presentará ante el sacerdote Eleazar, quien mediante el urim consultará al Señor. Cuando Josué ordene ir a la guerra, la comunidad entera saldrá con él y, cuando le ordene volver, volverá.
22Moisés hizo lo que el Señor le ordenó. Tomó a Josué y lo puso delante del sacerdote Eleazar y de toda la comunidad. 23Luego le impuso las manos y le entregó el cargo, tal como el Señor lo había mandado.
