Balak Sends For Balaam
1Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab. They camped along the Jordan River across from Jericho.
2Balak saw everything that Israel had done to the Amorites. Balak was the son of Zippor. 3The Moabites were terrified because there were so many Israelites. In fact, the Moabites were filled with panic because of the Israelites.
4The Moabites spoke to the elders of Midian. They said, “This huge mob is going to destroy everything around us. They’ll lick it up as an ox licks up all the grass in the fields.”
Balak, the son of Zippor, was the king of Moab at that time. 5He sent messengers to get Balaam. Balaam was the son of Beor. Balaam was at the city of Pethor near the Euphrates River. Pethor was in the land where Balaam had been born. Balak told the messengers to say to Balaam,
“A nation has come out of Egypt. They are covering the face of the land. They’ve set up camp next to me. 6So come and put a curse on these people. They are too powerful for me. Maybe I’ll be able to win the battle over them. Maybe I’ll be able to drive them out of the land. I know that whoever you bless is blessed. And I know that whoever you cursed is cursed.”
7The elders of Moab and Midian left. They took with them the money they knew Balaam would ask for. They wanted him to use evil magic to figure things out for them. They came to where Balaam was. And they told him what Balak had said.
8“Spend the night here,” Balaam said to them. “I’ll report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me.” So the Moabite officials stayed with him.
9God came to Balaam. He asked, “Who are these men with you?”
10Balaam said to God, “Balak king of Moab, the son of Zippor, sent me a message. 11He said, ‘A nation has come out of Egypt. They are covering the whole surface of the land. So come and put a curse on them for me. Maybe I’ll be able to fight them. Maybe I’ll be able to drive them away.’ ”
12But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people. I have blessed them.”
13The next morning Balaam got up. He said to Balak’s officials, “Go back to your own country. The Lord won’t let me go with you.”
14So the Moabite officials returned to Balak. They said, “Balaam wouldn’t come with us.”
15Then Balak sent other officials. They were more important than the first ones. And there were more of them. 16They came to Balaam. They said,
“Balak, the son of Zippor, says, ‘Don’t let anything keep you from coming to me. 17I’ll make you very rich. I’ll do anything you say. So come and put a curse on those people for me.’ ”
18But Balaam gave them his answer. He said, “Balak could give me all the silver and gold in his palace. Even then, I still couldn’t do anything at all that goes beyond what the Lord my God commands. 19Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.”
20That night God came to Balaam. He said, “These men have come to get you. So go with them. But do only what I tell you to do.”
Balaam’s Donkey
21Balaam got up in the morning. He put a saddle on his donkey. Then he went with the Moabite officials. 22But God was very angry when Balaam went. So the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey. His two servants were with him. 23The donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road. The angel was holding a sword. He was ready for battle. So the donkey left the road and went into a field. Balaam hit the donkey. He wanted to get it back on the road.
24Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path. The path went through the vineyards. There were walls on both sides. 25The donkey saw the angel of the Lord. So it moved close to the wall. It crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So he hit the donkey again.
26Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead. He stood in a narrow place. There was no room to turn, either right or left. 27The donkey saw the angel of the Lord. So it lay down under Balaam. That made him angry. He hit the donkey with his walking stick. 28Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth. It said to Balaam, “What have I done to you? Why did you hit me these three times?”
29Balaam answered the donkey. He said, “You have made me look foolish! I wish I had a sword in my hand. If I did, I’d kill you right now.”
30The donkey said to Balaam, “I’m your own donkey. I’m the one you have always ridden. Haven’t you been riding me to this very day? Have I ever made you look foolish before?”
“No,” he said.
31Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes. He saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road. He saw that the angel was holding a sword. The angel was ready for battle. So Balaam bowed down. He fell with his face to the ground.
32The angel of the Lord spoke to him. He asked him, “Why have you hit your donkey three times? I have come here to oppose you. What you are doing is foolish. 33The donkey saw me. It turned away from me three times. Suppose it had not turned away. Then I would certainly have killed you by now. But I would have spared the donkey.”
34Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned. I didn’t realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Tell me whether you are pleased with me. If you aren’t, I’ll go back.”
35The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men. But say only what I tell you to say.” So Balaam went with Balak’s officials.
36Balak heard that Balaam was coming. So he went out to meet him. They met at a Moabite town near the Arnon River. The town was on the border of Balak’s territory. 37Balak said to Balaam, “Didn’t I send messengers to you? I wanted you to come quickly. So why didn’t you come? I can make you very rich.”
38“Well, I’ve come to you now,” Balaam replied. “But I can’t say whatever I please. I can only speak the words God puts in my mouth.”
39Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep. He gave some to Balaam. He also gave some to the officials with him. 41The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal. From there he could see the outer edges of the Israelite camp.
Balak trimite după Balaam
1Fiii lui Israel au plecat și apoi și‑au așezat tabăra în câmpiile Moabului, dincolo de Iordan, în fața Ierihonului.
2Balak, fiul lui Țipor, a văzut tot ce le făcuse Israel amoriților, 3iar Moab s‑a îngrozit la vederea unui popor așa de mare; Moab s‑a scârbit de fiii lui Israel. 4Atunci moabiții le‑au zis bătrânilor Midianului: „Mulțimea aceasta va înghiți tot ce se află în jurul nostru, așa cum mănâncă boul verdeața câmpului.“
Balak, fiul lui Țipor, rege al Moabului în vremea aceea, 5a trimis mesageri să‑l cheme pe Balaam, fiul lui Beor, care locuia la Petor, lângă râu5 Eufrat., în țara fiilor poporului său. Balak a zis: „Iată, un popor a ieșit din Egipt, a acoperit fața5, 11 Lit.: ochiul. pământului și s‑a așezat înaintea mea. 6Acum, vino, te rog, și blestemă acest popor pentru mine, căci este mai puternic decât mine! Poate că astfel îl voi putea învinge și alunga din țară, căci știu că pe cine binecuvântezi tu este binecuvântat, și pe cine blestemi tu este blestemat.“
7Bătrânii Moabului și bătrânii Midianului au plecat, luând cu ei daruri pentru prezicător. Când au ajuns la Balaam, i‑au spus cuvintele lui Balak. 8Balaam le‑a spus: „Rămâneți peste noapte aici și vă voi aduce cuvântul pe care mi‑l va spune Domnul.“ Astfel, conducătorii Moabului au rămas la Balaam.
9Dumnezeu a venit la Balaam și i‑a zis:
– Cine sunt oamenii aceștia care au venit la tine?
10Balaam I‑a răspuns lui Dumnezeu:
– Balak, fiul lui Țipor, regele Moabului, i‑a trimis la mine să‑mi spună: 11„Iată, un popor a ieșit din Egipt și a acoperit fața pământului. Vino acum și blestemă‑l! Poate că astfel îl voi putea învinge și alunga.“
12Dumnezeu i‑a zis lui Balaam:
– Să nu mergi cu ei și să nu blestemi acest popor, căci el este binecuvântat.
13Balaam s‑a sculat dimineața și le‑a zis conducătorilor lui Balak:
– Duceți‑vă în țara voastră căci Domnul nu‑mi dă voie să vin cu voi.
14Conducătorii Moabului s‑au ridicat, s‑au întors la Balak și i‑au zis: „Balaam a refuzat să vină cu noi.“
15Atunci Balak a trimis alți conducători, mai numeroși și mai cu vază decât primii.
16Aceștia au mers la Balaam și i‑au zis:
– Așa îți vorbește Balak, fiul lui Țipor: „Te rog, nu lăsa pe nimeni să te împiedice să vii la mine, 17căci te voi umple de slavă și voi face tot ce‑mi vei spune. Vino, te rog, și blestemă acest popor pentru mine!“
18Balaam le‑a răspuns slujitorilor lui Balak, zicând:
– Chiar dacă Balak mi‑ar da palatul lui plin cu argint și aur, tot n‑aș putea să fac niciun lucru, oricât de mic sau mare, peste porunca Domnului, Dumnezeul meu. 19Acum, vă rog, rămâneți și voi aici peste noapte ca să aflu ce‑mi va mai spune Domnul.
20În noaptea aceea, Dumnezeu a venit la Balaam și i‑a zis: „Dacă oamenii aceștia au venit să te cheme ca să mergi cu ei, ridică‑te și mergi cu ei, dar să faci doar ce‑ți voi porunci Eu.“
Măgărița lui Balaam
21Dimineața, Balaam s‑a sculat, a pus șaua pe măgărița sa și a plecat împreună cu conducătorii Moabului. 22Atunci Dumnezeu S‑a aprins de mânie pentru că plecase. Îngerul Domnului S‑a așezat în drum ca să i Se împotrivească. Balaam era călare pe măgărița lui, iar împreună cu el erau cei doi slujitori ai lui. 23Măgărița L‑a văzut pe Îngerul Domnului stând în drum cu sabia în mână și a părăsit drumul, luând‑o pe câmp. Balaam a lovit măgărița ca s‑o aducă din nou pe drum.
24Atunci Îngerul Domnului S‑a așezat pe un drum îngust, între două vii unde erau ziduri de o parte și de alta. 25Când măgărița L‑a văzut pe Îngerul Domnului, s‑a înghesuit lângă perete, strângând piciorul lui Balaam. Atunci el a lovit‑o din nou.
26Îngerul Domnului S‑a mutat într‑un loc strâmt, unde nu era loc să te întorci nici la dreapta, nici la stânga. 27Când măgărița L‑a văzut pe Îngerul Domnului, s‑a culcat la pământ sub Balaam. Balaam s‑a aprins de mânie și a început s‑o lovească cu un băț.
28Atunci Domnul a deschis gura măgăriței și ea i‑a zis lui Balaam:
– Ce ți‑am făcut de m‑ai lovit de trei ori?
29Balaam i‑a răspuns măgăriței:
– Pentru că ți‑ai bătut joc de mine! Dacă aș avea o sabie în mână, te‑aș ucide chiar acum.
30Măgărița i‑a răspuns:
– Nu sunt eu măgărița ta, pe care ai călărit din zilele tinereții tale până astăzi? Am eu obiceiul să mă port astfel?
El a răspuns:
– Nu.
31Atunci Domnul i‑a deschis ochii lui Balaam, și el L‑a văzut pe Îngerul Domnului stând în drum cu sabia scoasă. El s‑a închinat cu fața la pământ.
32Îngerul Domnului l‑a întrebat:
– De ce ți‑ai lovit măgărița de trei ori? Iată, am ieșit ca să‑ți stau împotrivă, deoarece calea ta este una nechibzuită înaintea Mea. 33Măgărița M‑a văzut și s‑a abătut de trei ori dinaintea Mea. Dacă nu s‑ar fi abătut, te‑aș fi ucis cu siguranță, dar pe ea aș fi lăsat‑o să trăiască.
34Balaam I‑a răspuns Îngerului Domnului:
– Am păcătuit, căci n‑am știut că stăteai împotriva mea în drum. Dacă ceea ce fac este un lucru rău în ochii Tăi, mă voi întoarce.
35Îngerul Domnului i‑a zis lui Balaam:
– Du‑te cu oamenii aceștia, dar să le spui doar cuvântul pe care ți‑l voi zice Eu.
Astfel, Balaam s‑a dus împreună cu conducătorii lui Balak. 36Când Balak a auzit că vine Balaam, i‑a ieșit în întâmpinare în cetatea moabită de la hotarul Arnonului, la marginea teritoriului său.
37Balak i‑a zis lui Balaam:
– N‑am trimis eu oare să te cheme la mine? De ce nu ai venit? Oare nu sunt eu în stare să te umplu de slavă?
38Balaam i‑a răspuns lui Balak:
– Iată, am venit la tine. Acum, oare chiar voi putea eu să vorbesc ceva? Trebuie să spun doar cuvântul pe care mi‑l va pune Dumnezeu în gură.
39Balaam a mers cu Balak și au intrat în cetatea Chiriat-Huțot. 40Balak a înjunghiat vite și oi, și a trimis din ele atât lui Balaam, cât și conducătorilor care erau cu el. 41A doua zi, Balak l‑a luat pe Balaam și l‑a urcat pe Bamot-Baal41 Bamot-Baal înseamnă Înălțimile lui Baal., de unde se putea vedea o parte din popor.
