Numbers 1:1-54

The Men of Israel Are Counted

1The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting. It happened in the Desert of Sinai. The Lord spoke to him on the first day of the second month. It was the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. The Lord said, 2“Count all the men of Israel. Make a list of them by their tribes and families. List every man by name. List them one by one. 3Count all the men able to serve in the army. They must be 20 years old or more. I want you and Aaron to make a list of them group by group. 4One man from each tribe must help you. Those who help must be the heads of their families.

5“Here are the names of the men who must help you.

“From the tribe of Reuben will come Elizur, the son of Shedeur.

6From the tribe of Simeon will come Shelumiel, the son of Zurishaddai.

7From the tribe of Judah will come Nahshon, the son of Amminadab.

8From the tribe of Issachar will come Nethanel, the son of Zuar.

9From the tribe of Zebulun will come Eliab, the son of Helon.

10From the tribe of Ephraim will come Elishama, the son of Ammihud.

From the tribe of Manasseh will come Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur.

Ephraim and Manasseh are Joseph’s two sons.

11From the tribe of Benjamin will come Abidan, the son of Gideoni.

12From the tribe of Dan will come Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai.

13From the tribe of Asher will come Pagiel, the son of Okran.

14From the tribe of Gad will come Eliasaph, the son of Deuel.

15From the tribe of Naphtali will come Ahira, the son of Enan.”

16These were the men appointed from the community. They were the leaders of the tribes of their people. They were the heads of the major families in Israel.

17Moses and Aaron went and got the men whose names had been given to them. 18Then Moses and Aaron gathered all the men of Israel together. It was the first day of the second month. The people wrote down the tribe and family they belonged to. The men 20 years old or more were listed by name. They were listed one by one. 19Everything was done just as the Lord had commanded Moses. So Moses counted them in the Desert of Sinai.

20Here is the number of men from the tribe of Reuben. He is Israel’s oldest son.

All the men able to serve in the army were counted. They were 20 years old or more. They were listed by name. They were listed one by one. They were listed according to the records of their tribes and families. 21The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500.

22Here is the number of men from the tribe of Simeon.

24Here is the number of men from the tribe of Gad.

26Here is the number of men from the tribe of Judah.

28Here is the number of men from the tribe of Issachar.

All the men able to serve in the army were counted. They were 20 years old or more. They were listed by name. They were listed according to the records of their tribes and families. 29The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400.

30Here is the number of men from the tribe of Zebulun.

32Here is the number of men from the tribe of Ephraim. He is the son of Joseph.

38Here is the number of men from the tribe of Dan.

40Here is the number of men from the tribe of Asher.

All the men able to serve in the army were counted. They were 20 years old or more. They were listed by name. They were listed according to the records of their tribes and families. 41The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500.

42Here is the number of men from the tribe of Naphtali.

All the men able to serve in the army were counted. They were 20 years old or more. They were listed by name. They were listed according to the records of their tribes and families. 43The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400.

44These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron. The 12 leaders of Israel helped them. There was one leader from each tribe. 45The men who were counted were able to serve in Israel’s army. All of them were 20 years old or more. They were counted family by family. 46The total number of men was 603,550.

47But the families of the tribe of Levi were not counted along with the others. 48The Lord had spoken to Moses. He had said, 49“You must not count the men from the tribe of Levi. Do not include them when you list the other men of Israel. 50Instead, put the Levites in charge of the holy tent. That is where the tablets of the covenant law are kept. The Levites will be in charge of everything that belongs to the holy tent. They must carry the tent and everything that belongs to it. They must take care of it. They must set up camp around it. 51When the holy tent must be moved, the Levites must take it down. And when the tent must be set up, the Levites must do it. Anyone else who approaches it must be put to death. 52The Israelites must set up their tents by military groups. All of them must be in their own camps under their own flags. 53But the Levites must set up their tents around the holy tent. That’s where the tablets of the covenant law are kept. Then I will not be angry with the community of Israel. The Levites will be responsible for taking care of the tent.”

54The Israelites did everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Censo de las tribus de Israel

1El Señor le habló a Moisés en el desierto de Sinaí, en la Tienda de reunión, el día primero del mes segundo, en el segundo año después de que los israelitas salieron de Egipto. Le dijo: 2«Hagan un censo de toda la comunidad de Israel por clanes y por familias patriarcales, anotando uno por uno los nombres de todos los varones. 3Tú y Aarón reclutarán por escuadrones a todos los varones israelitas mayores de veinte años que sean aptos para el servicio militar. 4Para esto contarán con la colaboración de un hombre de cada tribu, que sea jefe de una familia patriarcal.

5»Estos son los nombres de quienes habrán de ayudarles:

»por la tribu de Rubén, Elisur hijo de Sedeúr;

6por la de Simeón, Selumiel hijo de Zurisaday;

7por la de Judá, Naasón hijo de Aminadab;

8por la de Isacar, Natanael hijo de Zuar;

9por la de Zabulón, Eliab hijo de Helón;

10por las tribus de los hijos de José: Elisama hijo de Amiud por la tribu de Efraín, y Gamaliel hijo de Pedasur por la de Manasés;

11por la tribu de Benjamín, Abidán hijo de Gedeoni;

12por la de Dan, Ajiezer hijo de Amisaday;

13por la de Aser, Paguiel hijo de Ocrán;

14por la de Gad, Eliasaf hijo de Deuel;

15por la de Neftalí, Ajirá hijo de Enán».

16A estos la comunidad los nombró jefes de las tribus patriarcales y comandantes de los escuadrones de Israel.

El censo y sus resultados

17Moisés y Aarón tomaron consigo a los hombres que habían sido designados por nombre, 18y el día primero del mes segundo reunieron a toda la comunidad. Uno por uno fueron empadronados por clanes y por familias patriarcales. De este modo quedaron anotados los nombres de todos los varones mayores de veinte años, 19tal como el Señor se lo había mandado a Moisés. Este censo lo hizo Moisés en el desierto de Sinaí.

20Los descendientes de Rubén, primogénito de Israel, quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales, según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 21El número de la tribu de Rubén llegó a cuarenta y seis mil quinientos hombres.

22Los descendientes de Simeón quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 23El número de la tribu de Simeón llegó a cincuenta y nueve mil trescientos hombres.

24Los descendientes de Gad quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 25El número de la tribu de Gad llegó a cuarenta y cinco mil seiscientos cincuenta hombres.

26Los descendientes de Judá quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 27El número de la tribu de Judá llegó a setenta y cuatro mil seiscientos hombres.

28Los descendientes de Isacar quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 29El número de la tribu de Isacar llegó a cincuenta y cuatro mil cuatrocientos hombres.

30Los descendientes de Zabulón quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 31El número de la tribu de Zabulón llegó a cincuenta y siete mil cuatrocientos hombres.

32Los descendientes de José:

Los descendientes de Efraín quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 33El número de la tribu de Efraín llegó a cuarenta mil quinientos hombres.

34Los descendientes de Manasés quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 35El número de la tribu de Manasés llegó a treinta y dos mil doscientos hombres.

36Los descendientes de Benjamín quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 37El número de la tribu de Benjamín llegó a treinta y cinco mil cuatrocientos hombres.

38Los descendientes de Dan quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 39El número de la tribu de Dan llegó a sesenta y dos mil setecientos hombres.

40Los descendientes de Aser quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 41El número de la tribu de Aser llegó a cuarenta y un mil quinientos hombres.

42Los descendientes de Neftalí quedaron registrados por clanes y por familias patriarcales según su genealogía. Uno por uno fueron empadronados todos los varones mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar. 43El número de la tribu de Neftalí llegó a cincuenta y tres mil cuatrocientos hombres.

44Este es el resultado del censo que hicieron Moisés y Aarón, con la ayuda de los doce jefes de Israel, cada uno en representación de su familia patriarcal. 45Todos los israelitas mayores de veinte años que eran aptos para el servicio militar fueron anotados, según su familia patriarcal. 46El total llegó a seiscientos tres mil quinientos cincuenta israelitas censados.

Los levitas

47Los levitas no fueron censados con los demás, 48porque el Señor le había dicho a Moisés: 49«A la tribu de Leví no la incluirás en el censo de los hijos de Israel. 50Más bien, tú mismo los pondrás a cargo del santuario del pacto, de todos sus utensilios y de todo lo relacionado con él. Los levitas transportarán el santuario y todos sus utensilios. Además, serán los ministros del santuario y acamparán a su alrededor. 51Cuando haya que trasladar el santuario, los levitas se encargarán de desarmarlo; cuando haya que instalarlo, serán ellos quienes lo armen. Pero cualquiera que se acerque al santuario y no sea sacerdote morirá. 52Todos los israelitas acamparán bajo su propio estandarte y en su propio campamento, según sus escuadrones. 53En cambio, los levitas acamparán alrededor del santuario del pacto, para evitar que Dios descargue su ira sobre la comunidad de Israel. Serán, pues, los levitas los encargados de cuidar el santuario del pacto».

54Los israelitas hicieron todo conforme a lo que el Señor le había mandado a Moisés.
