Giving to Needy People
1“Be careful not to do good deeds in front of other people. Don’t do those deeds to be seen by others. If you do, your Father in heaven will not reward you.
2“When you give to needy people, do not announce it by having trumpets blown. Do not be like those who only pretend to be holy. They announce what they do in the synagogues and on the streets. They want to be honored by other people. What I’m about to tell you is true. They have received their complete reward. 3When you give to needy people, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4Then your giving will be done secretly. Your Father will reward you, because he sees what you do secretly.
Prayer
5“When you pray, do not be like those who only pretend to be holy. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners. They want to be seen by other people. What I’m about to tell you is true. They have received their complete reward. 6When you pray, go into your room. Close the door and pray to your Father, who can’t be seen. Your Father will reward you, because he sees what you do secretly. 7When you pray, do not keep talking on and on. That is what ungodly people do. They think they will be heard because they talk a lot. 8Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need even before you ask him.
9“This is how you should pray.
“ ‘Our Father in heaven,
may your name be honored.
10May your kingdom come.
May what you want to happen be done
on earth as it is done in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12And forgive us our sins,
just as we also have forgiven those who sin against us.
13Keep us from sinning when we are tempted.
Save us from the evil one.’
14Forgive other people when they sin against you. If you do, your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive the sins of other people, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Fasting
16“When you go without eating, do not look gloomy like those who only pretend to be holy. They make their faces look very sad. They want to show people they are fasting. What I’m about to tell you is true. They have received their complete reward. 17But when you go without eating, put olive oil on your head. Wash your face. 18Then others will not know that you are fasting. Only your Father, who can’t be seen, will know it. Your Father will reward you, because he sees what you do secretly.
Gather Riches in Heaven
19“Do not gather for yourselves riches on earth. Moths and rats can destroy them. Thieves can break in and steal them. 20Instead, gather for yourselves riches in heaven. There, moths and rats do not destroy them. There, thieves do not break in and steal them. 21Your heart will be where your riches are.
22“The eye is like a lamp for the body. Suppose your eyes are healthy. Then your whole body will be full of light. 23But suppose your eyes can’t see well. Then your whole body will be full of darkness. If the light inside you is darkness, then it is very dark!
24“No one can serve two masters at the same time. You will hate one of them and love the other. Or you will be faithful to one and dislike the other. You can’t serve God and money at the same time.
Do Not Worry
25“I tell you, do not worry. Don’t worry about your life and what you will eat or drink. And don’t worry about your body and what you will wear. Isn’t there more to life than eating? Aren’t there more important things for the body than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air. They don’t plant or gather crops. They don’t put away crops in storerooms. But your Father who is in heaven feeds them. Aren’t you worth much more than they are? 27Can you add even one hour to your life by worrying?
28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the wild flowers grow. They don’t work or make clothing. 29But here is what I tell you. Not even Solomon in all his royal robes was dressed like one of these flowers. 30If that is how God dresses the wild grass, won’t he dress you even better? Your faith is so small! After all, the grass is here only today. Tomorrow it is thrown into the fire. 31So don’t worry. Don’t say, ‘What will we eat?’ Or, ‘What will we drink?’ Or, ‘What will we wear?’ 32People who are ungodly run after all those things. Your Father who is in heaven knows that you need them. 33But put God’s kingdom first. Do what he wants you to do. Then all those things will also be given to you. 34So don’t worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Despre milostenie
1Fiți atenți să nu vă îndepliniți dreptatea1 Unele mss redau: milostenia. voastră înaintea oamenilor, ca să fiți văzuți de ei! Altfel, nu aveți nicio răsplată de la Tatăl vostru Care este în ceruri!
2Astfel dar, atunci când faci milostenie, nu suna din trâmbiță înaintea ta, cum fac ipocriții în sinagogi și pe străzi, ca să fie slăviți de oameni. Adevărat vă spun că își primesc din plin răsplata! 3Tu însă, când faci milostenie, să nu știe stânga ta ce face dreapta, 4pentru ca milostenia ta sa fie făcută în ascuns, iar Tatăl tău, Care vede în ascuns, îți va răsplăti.
Despre rugăciune
(Mc. 11:25-26; Lc. 11:2-4)
5Atunci când vă rugați, să nu fiți ca ipocriții, căci lor le place să se roage stând în picioare în sinagogi și la colțurile străzilor, ca să fie văzuți de oameni. Adevărat vă spun că își primesc din plin răsplata! 6Tu însă, când te rogi, intră în odăița6 Cu referire la o încăpere izolată din casă, care nu avea de obicei nicio fereastră cu deschidere în exterior; era locul cel mai tainic din casă. Termenul mai poate avea și sensul de cămară, magazie (vezi Lc. 12:24), locul unde erau ținute lucrurile de valoare. ta, încuie ușa după tine și roagă-te Tatălui tău, Care este în ascuns, iar Tatăl tău, Care vede în ascuns, îți va răsplăti. 7Când vă rugați, să nu repetați la nesfârșit aceleași cuvinte, ca neamurile7 Sau: păgânii., care își închipuie că vor fi ascultate pentru vorbirea lor multă. 8Voi să nu fiți ca ei, pentru că Tatăl vostru știe de ce anume aveți nevoie, mai înainte ca voi să-I cereți.
9Iată deci cum trebuie să vă rugați:
«Tatăl nostru, Care ești în ceruri,
sfințească-se Numele Tău!
10Vie Împărăția Ta,
facă-se voia Ta,
precum în cer, așa și pe pământ!
11Pâinea noastră, cea de toate zilele11 Sau: pentru ziua de astăzi; sau: pentru ziua care vine.,
dă-ne-o nouă astăzi!
12Și iartă-ne datoriile noastre,
precum și noi iertăm datornicilor noștri!
13Și nu ne duce în ispită,13 Cu sensul de: nu ne lăsa să cădem în ispită, având în vedere că Dumnezeu nu ispitește pe nimeni și nici nu poate fi ispitit (vezi Iac. 1:13). Vezi și afirmația lui Isus din Mt. 26:41.
ci scapă-ne de cel rău13 Sau: de rău.!
Căci a Ta este Împărăția
și puterea, și slava, în veci. Amin!»
14Căci, dacă le iertați oamenilor nelegiuirile14-15 Gr.: paraptoma, care literal înseamnă a călca alături., vi le va ierta și vouă Tatăl vostru cel ceresc, 15dar, dacă nu le iertați oamenilor nelegiuirile, nici Tatăl vostru nu vă va ierta nelegiuirile voastre.
Despre post
16Atunci când postiți, nu fiți mohorâți ca ipocriții, căci ei își posomorăsc fețele ca să le arate oamenilor că postesc. Adevărat vă spun că își primesc din plin răsplata! 17Tu însă, când postești, unge-ți capul și spală-ți fața, 18ca să nu le arăți oamenilor că postești, ci Tatălui tău, Care este în ascuns, iar Tatăl tău, Care vede în ascuns, îți va răsplăti.
Despre adevăratele comori
(Lc. 11:34-36; 12:33-34; 16:13)
19Nu vă adunați comori pe pământ, unde le distrug moliile și rugina și unde le sapă și le fură hoții, 20ci adunați-vă comori în cer, unde nici molia, nici rugina nu le distrug, și unde hoții nu le sapă, nici nu le fură. 21Căci, acolo unde este comoara ta, acolo va fi și inima ta.
22Ochiul este candela trupului. Prin urmare, dacă ochiul tău este sănătos22 Termenul se poate referi la focalizarea atenției asupra unui singur lucru, iar în termeni spirituali și în context, la un devotament total față de Dumnezeu (vezi 1 Cron. 29:17, unde, în LXX, este folosit același termen grecesc). Sau, având în vedere contextul: Dacă ești generos., tot trupul tău va fi plin de lumină, 23dar, dacă ochiul tău este rău23 Vezi nota de la 6:22. Sau: dacă ești zgârcit., atunci tot trupul tău va fi plin de întuneric. Așadar, dacă lumina care este în tine este întuneric, mare este întunericul acesta!
24Nimeni nu poate sluji la doi stăpâni: căci ori îl va urî pe unul și-l va iubi pe celălalt, ori îi va fi devotat unuia și-l va disprețui pe celălalt. Nu puteți sluji și lui Dumnezeu și bogăției24 Gr.: mamonas, un termen aramaic care înseamnă bogăție, avere..
Despre îngrijorări
(Lc. 12:22-31)
25De aceea, vă spun: nu vă îngrijorați pentru viața25 Lit.: sufletul. voastră, gândindu-vă ce veți mânca sau ce veți bea, nici pentru trupul vostru, gândindu-vă cu ce vă veți îmbrăca! Oare nu este viața mai mult decât hrana, iar trupul mai mult decât îmbrăcămintea? 26Uitați-vă la păsările cerului: ele nici nu seamănă, nici nu seceră și nici nu adună în hambare. Și totuși, Tatăl vostru cel ceresc le hrănește. Oare nu sunteți voi cu mult mai prețioși decât ele? 27Și apoi, cine dintre voi, îngrijorându-se, poate să adauge măcar un cot la lungimea vieții lui27 Vezi și Ps. 39:5, acolo unde durata vieții este „măsurată“ cu ajutorul unui lat de palmă. Sau: măcar un cot la înălțimea lui?!?!
28Și de ce vă îngrijorați cu privire la îmbrăcăminte? Uitați-vă bine cum cresc crinii de pe câmp: ei nici nu se ostenesc, nici nu torc. 29Și totuși, vă spun că nici chiar Solomon, în toată slava lui, nu s-a îmbrăcat ca unul dintre ei! 30Iar dacă Dumnezeu îmbracă astfel iarba de pe câmp, care astăzi este, dar mâine va fi aruncată în cuptor, oare nu vă va îmbrăca El cu mult mai mult pe voi, puțin credincioșilor!? 31Așadar, să nu vă îngrijorați, zicând: «Ce vom mânca?» sau «Ce vom bea?» sau «Cu ce ne vom îmbrăca?», 32fiindcă toate aceste lucruri neamurile le caută. Căci Tatăl vostru cel ceresc știe că aveți nevoie de toate acestea. 33Căutați mai întâi Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și dreptatea Lui, și vi se vor da și toate acestea. 34Nu vă îngrijorați deci de ziua de mâine, căci ziua de mâine se va îngrijora de ea însăși. Îi este de ajuns zilei necazul ei.
