Jesus Teaches the Disciples and Crowds
1Jesus saw the crowds. So he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him. 2Then he began to teach them.
Jesus Gives Blessings
He said,
3“Blessed are those who are spiritually needy.
The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
4Blessed are those who are sad.
They will be comforted.
5Blessed are those who are humble.
They will be given the earth.
6Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty for what is right.
They will be filled.
7Blessed are those who show mercy.
They will be shown mercy.
8Blessed are those whose hearts are pure.
They will see God.
9Blessed are those who make peace.
They will be called children of God.
10Blessed are those who suffer for doing what is right.
The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
11“Blessed are you when people make fun of you and hurt you because of me. You are also blessed when they tell all kinds of evil lies about you because of me. 12Be joyful and glad. Your reward in heaven is great. In the same way, people hurt the prophets who lived long ago.
Salt and Light
13“You are the salt of the earth. But suppose the salt loses its saltiness. How can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything. It will be thrown out. People will walk all over it.
14“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can’t be hidden. 15Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Jesus Fulfills the Law
17“Do not think I have come to get rid of what is written in the Law or in the Prophets. I have not come to do this. Instead, I have come to fulfill what is written. 18What I’m about to tell you is true. Heaven and earth will disappear before the smallest letter disappears from the Law. Not even the smallest mark of a pen will disappear from the Law until everything is completed. 19Do not ignore even one of the least important commands. And do not teach others to ignore them. If you do, you will be called the least important person in the kingdom of heaven. Instead, practice and teach these commands. Then you will be called important in the kingdom of heaven. 20Here is what I tell you. You must be more godly than the Pharisees and the teachers of the law. If you are not, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Murder
21“You have heard what was said to people who lived long ago. They were told, ‘Do not commit murder. (Exodus 20:13) Anyone who murders will be judged for it.’ 22But here is what I tell you. Do not be angry with a brother or sister. Anyone who is angry with them will be judged. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ must stand trial in court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire in hell.
23“Suppose you are offering your gift at the altar. And you remember that your brother or sister has something against you. 24Leave your gift in front of the altar. First go and make peace with them. Then come back and offer your gift.
25“Suppose someone has a claim against you and is taking you to court. Settle the matter quickly. Do this while you are still together on the way. If you don’t, you may be handed over to the judge. The judge may hand you over to the officer to be thrown into prison. 26What I’m about to tell you is true. You will not get out until you have paid the very last penny!
Adultery
27“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ (Exodus 20:14) 28But here is what I tell you. Do not even look at a woman in the wrong way. Anyone who does has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, poke it out and throw it away. Your eye is only one part of your body. It is better to lose an eye than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. Your hand is only one part of your body. It is better to lose a hand than for your whole body to go into hell.
Divorce
31“It has been said, ‘Suppose a man divorces his wife. If he does, he must give her a letter of divorce.’ (Deuteronomy 24:1) 32But here is what I tell you. Anyone who divorces his wife makes her a victim of adultery. And anyone who gets married to the divorced woman commits adultery. A man may divorce his wife only if she has not been faithful to him.
Promises
33“Again, you have heard what was said to your people long ago. They were told, ‘Do not break the promises you make to the Lord. Keep your promises to the Lord that you have made.’ 34But here is what I tell you. Do not make any promises like that at all. Do not make them in the name of heaven. That is God’s throne. 35Do not make them in the name of the earth. That is the stool for God’s feet. Do not make them in the name of Jerusalem. That is the city of the Great King. 36And do not make a promise in your own name. You can’t make even one hair of your head white or black. 37All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ Anything more than this comes from the evil one.
Be Kind to Others
38“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye must be put out for an eye. A tooth must be knocked out for a tooth.’ (Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:21) 39But here is what I tell you. Do not fight against an evil person. Suppose someone slaps you on your right cheek. Turn your other cheek to them also. 40Suppose someone takes you to court to get your shirt. Let them have your coat also. 41Suppose someone forces you to go one mile. Go two miles with them. 42Give to the one who asks you for something. Don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow something from you.
Love Your Enemies
43“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor. (Leviticus 19:18) Hate your enemy.’ 44But here is what I tell you. Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you. 45Then you will be children of your Father who is in heaven. He causes his sun to shine on evil people and good people. He sends rain on those who do right and those who don’t. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Even the tax collectors do that. 47If you greet only your own people, what more are you doing than others? Even people who are ungodly do that. 48So be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
산상 설교
1예수님은 많은 사람들이 모여드는 것을 보시고 산에 올라가 앉으셨다. 그러자 제자들이 그분에게 나아왔다.
2그래서 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 가르치셨다.
3“마음이 가난한 사람들은 행복하다. 하늘 나라가 그들의 것이다.
4슬퍼하는 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 위로를 받을 것이다.
5유순한 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 땅을 물려받을 것이다.
6의를 위해 굶주리고 목마른 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 5:6 또는 ‘배부를 것임이요’원하는 것을 다 얻을 것이다.
7남을 불쌍히 여기는 사람들은 행복하다. 하나님도 그들을 불쌍히 여기실 것이다.
8마음이 깨끗한 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 하나님을 볼 것이다.
9화평을 이루는 사람들은 행복하다. 그들은 하나님의 아들이라 불릴 것이다.
10의를 위해 핍박을 받는 사람들은 행복하다. 하늘 나라가 그들의 것이다.
11“나 때문에 사람들이 너희를 욕하고 핍박하고 거짓말로 온갖 악담을 할 때에 너희는 행복하다.
12하늘에서 큰 상이 너희를 기다리고 있다. 기뻐하고 즐거워하여라. 이전의 예언자들도 이런 핍박을 받았다.
13“너희는 세상의 소금이다. 그런데 소금이 그 맛을 잃으면 어떻게 다시 짜게 할 수 있겠느냐? 그런 것은 아무 쓸모가 없어 밖에 버려져 사람들에게 짓밟힐 뿐이다.
14너희는 세상의 빛이다. 산 위에 있는 마을은 잘 보이기 마련이다.
15등불을 켜서 그릇으로 덮어 둘 사람은 아무도 없다. 오히려 그것을 등잔대 위에 올려놓아 집 안에 있는 모든 사람에게 비치게 하지 않겠느냐?
16이와 같이 너희 빛을 사람들 앞에 비추게 하라. 그래서 사람들이 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지를 찬양하게 하라.
17“내가 율법이나 예언자들을 없애러 왔다고 생각하지 말아라. 없애러 온 것이 아니라 완전하게 하러 왔다.
18내가 분명히 말해 둔다. 하늘과 땅이 없어지기 전에는 율법의 5:18 헬 ‘한 이오타’ (헬라어 알파벳 중 제일 작은 문자)한 점이나 한 획도 결코 없어지지 않고 다 이루어질 것이다.
19누구든지 이 계명 가운데 가장 작은 것 하나라도 어기거나 다른 사람에게 그렇게 하라고 가르치면 하늘 나라에서 가장 작은 사람이 될 것이다. 그러나 누구든지 계명을 실천하고 가르치면 하늘 나라에서 위대한 사람이 될 것이다.
20내가 너희에게 말해 두지만 너희 생활이 율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들보다 의롭지 못하면 너희가 절대로 하늘 나라에 들어가지 못할 것이다.
21“5:21 원문에는 ‘옛 사람에게 말한 바’모세의 법에는 5:21 출20:13‘살인하지 말아라. 살인하면 누구든지 재판을 받게 된다’ 라고 쓰여 있다.
22그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 누구든지 형제에게 이유 없이 화내는 사람은 재판을 받고, 자기 형제를 5:22 아람어 ‘라가.’ ‘미련한’, ‘어리석은’ 이란 뜻.어리석다고 욕하는 사람은 5:22 헬 ‘수네드리온’ (공회)법정에 끌려가게 될 것이며, ‘이 미련한 놈아!’ 하고 말하는 사람은 5:22 헬 ‘게엔나’지옥 불에 들어갈 것이다.
23그러므로 제단에 예물을 드리다가 형제에게 원망 들을 만한 일이 생각나거든
24예물을 제단 앞에 두고 먼저 가서 네 형제와 화해하라. 그리고 와서 예물을 드려라.
25너를 고소하려는 사람과 함께 법정으로 갈 때 너는 도중에 그와 재빨리 타협하라. 그렇지 않고 재판을 받는 날이면 유치장 신세를 져야 할 것이다.
26그렇게 되면 네가 5:26 또는 ‘호리’마지막 한푼까지 다 갚기 전에는 절대로 거기서 나오지 못할 것이다.
27“또 율법에는 5:27 출20:14, 신5:18‘간음하지 말아라’ 고 쓰여 있다.
28그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 누구든지 정욕의 눈으로 여자를 바라보는 사람은 이미 마음으로 그녀와 간음하였다.
29오른눈이 너를 죄 짓게 하거든 빼어 버려라. 몸의 한 부분을 잃을지라도 온 몸이 지옥에 던져지지 않는 것이 더 낫다.
30또 오른손이 너를 죄 짓게 하면 그 손을 잘라 버려라. 몸의 한 부분을 잃을지라도 온 몸이 지옥에 떨어지지 않는 것이 더 낫다.
31“또 율법에 5:31 신24:1‘자기 아내와 이혼하는 사람은 누구든지 그녀에게 이혼 증서를 써 주어야 한다’ 라고 쓰여 있다.
32그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 누구든지 음행한 일도 없는데 자기 아내와 이혼하는 사람은 아내로 간음하게 하는 자이며 이혼한 여자와 결혼하는 사람도 간음하는 자이다.
33“또 옛 사람들에게 ‘거짓 맹세를 하지 말고 주님께 맹세한 것은 다 지켜라’ 고 한 말을 들어서 알 것이다.
34그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 절대로 맹세하지 말아라. 하늘을 두고도 맹세하지 말아라. 하늘은 하나님의 보좌이다.
35땅을 두고도 맹세하지 말아라. 땅은 하나님의 발판이다. 예루살렘을 두고도 맹세하지 말아라. 예루살렘은 위대한 왕의 도시이다.
36네 머리를 두고도 맹세하지 말아라. 너는 머리카락 하나도 희거나 검게 할 수가 없다.
37너희는 그저 ‘예’ 할 것은 ‘예’ 하고 ‘아니오’ 할 것은 ‘아니오’ 라고만 말하여라. 그 이상의 말은 악에서 나오는 것이다.
38“또 5:38 출21:24, 레24:20, 신19:21‘눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로 갚아라’ 한 말을 듣지 않았느냐?
39그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 악한 사람을 대적하지 말아라. 누가 네 오른뺨을 때리거든 왼뺨도 돌려 대어라.
40너를 고소하여 속옷을 빼앗고자 하는 사람에게는 겉옷까지 주어라.
41누가 네게 억지로 오 리를 가자 하거든 십 리를 가 주어라.
42네게 요구하는 사람에게 주고 꾸어 달라는 사람에게 거절하지 말아라.
43“5:43 레19:18‘네 이웃을 사랑하고 원수를 미워하여라’ 는 말씀을 듣지 않았느냐?
44그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 원수를 사랑하고 너희를 핍박하는 사람들을 위해 기도하라.
45그렇게 하는 것이 하나님 아버지의 자녀 된 도리이다. 하나님은 해가 악한 사람과 선한 사람에게 다 같이 비치게 하시고 의로운 사람과 의롭지 못한 사람에게 비를 똑같이 내려 주신다.
46너희를 사랑하는 사람들만 사랑한다면 너희가 무슨 상을 받겠느냐? 세무원들도 그만큼은 하지 않느냐?
47또 너희가 너희 형제들에게만 인사한다면 남보다 나을 것이 무엇이겠느냐? 5:47 원문에는 ‘이방인들’믿지 않는 사람들도 그렇게 하지 않느냐?
48그러므로 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께서 완전하심과 같이 너희도 완전하여라.”
