Jesus’ Appearance Is Changed
1After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John the brother of James with him. He led them up a high mountain. They were all alone. 2There in front of them his appearance was changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes became as white as the light. 3Just then Moses and Elijah appeared in front of them. Moses and Elijah were talking with Jesus.
4Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters. One will be for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them. A voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him. Listen to him!”
6When the disciples heard this, they were terrified. They fell with their faces to the ground. 7But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9They came down the mountain. On the way down, Jesus told them what to do. “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen,” he said. “Wait until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
10The disciples asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah has to come first?”
11Jesus replied, “That’s right. Elijah is supposed to come and make all things new again. 12But I tell you, Elijah has already come. People didn’t recognize him. They have done to him everything they wanted to do. In the same way, they are going to make the Son of Man suffer.” 13Then the disciples understood that Jesus was talking to them about John the Baptist.
Jesus Heals a Boy Who Is Controlled by a Demon
14When they came near the crowd, a man approached Jesus. He got on his knees in front of him. 15“Lord,” he said, “have mercy on my son. He shakes wildly and suffers a great deal. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16I brought him to your disciples. But they couldn’t heal him.”
17“You unbelieving and evil people!” Jesus replied. “How long do I have to stay with you? How long do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18Jesus ordered the demon to leave the boy, and it came out of him. He was healed at that moment.
19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private. They asked, “Why couldn’t we drive out the demon?”
20-21He replied, “Because your faith is much too small. What I’m about to tell you is true. If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, it is enough. You can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there.’ And it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Jesus Speaks a Second Time About His Coming Death
22They came together in Galilee. Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be handed over to men. 23They will kill him. On the third day he will rise from the dead.” Then the disciples were filled with deep sadness.
Jesus Pays the Temple Tax
24Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum. There the people who collect the temple tax came to Peter. They asked him, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”
25“Yes, he does,” he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus spoke first. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “Who do the kings of the earth collect taxes and fees from? Do they collect them from their own children or from others?”
26“From others,” Peter answered.
“Then the children don’t have to pay,” Jesus said to him. 27“But we don’t want to make them angry. So go to the lake and throw out your fishing line. Take the first fish you catch. Open its mouth. There you will find the exact coin you need. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

1Seis días después, Jesús tomó consigo a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, el hermano de Santiago, y los llevó aparte, a una montaña alta. 2Allí se transfiguró en presencia de ellos; su rostro resplandeció como el sol y su ropa se volvió blanca como la luz. 3En esto, se aparecieron Moisés y Elías conversando con Jesús. 4Pedro dijo a Jesús:
—Señor, ¡qué bien que estemos aquí! Si quieres, levantaré tres albergues: uno para ti, otro para Moisés y otro para Elías.
5Mientras estaba aún hablando, apareció una nube luminosa que los envolvió y de la cual salió una voz que dijo: «Este es mi Hijo amado; estoy muy complacido con él. ¡Escúchenlo!».
6Al oír esto, los discípulos se postraron sobre su rostro, aterrorizados. 7Pero Jesús se acercó a ellos y los tocó.
—Levántense —dijo—. No tengan miedo.
8Cuando alzaron la vista, no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús.
9Mientras bajaban de la montaña, Jesús les encargó:
—No cuenten a nadie lo que han visto hasta que el Hijo del hombre se levante de entre los muertos.
10Entonces los discípulos preguntaron a Jesús:
—¿Por qué dicen los maestros de la Ley que Elías tiene que venir primero?
11—Sin duda Elías vendrá y restaurará todas las cosas —respondió Jesús—. 12Pero les digo que Elías ya vino y no lo reconocieron, sino que hicieron con él todo lo que quisieron. De la misma manera, va a sufrir el Hijo del hombre a manos de ellos.
13Entonces entendieron los discípulos que les estaba hablando de Juan el Bautista.
Jesús sana a un muchacho endemoniado

14Cuando llegaron a la multitud, un hombre se acercó a Jesús y se arrodilló delante de él. 15Y dijo:
—Señor, ten compasión de mi hijo. Le dan ataques y sufre terriblemente. Muchas veces cae en el fuego o en el agua. 16Se lo traje a tus discípulos, pero no pudieron sanarlo.
17—¡Ah, generación incrédula y malvada! —respondió Jesús—. ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que estar con ustedes? ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que soportarlos? Tráiganme acá al muchacho.
18Jesús reprendió al demonio, el cual salió del muchacho, y este quedó sano desde aquel momento.
19Después los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y, en privado, preguntaron:
—¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos expulsarlo?
20—Por la poca fe que tienen —respondió—. Les aseguro que si tuvieran fe tan pequeña como una semilla de mostaza, podrían decirle a esta montaña: “Trasládate de aquí para allá” y se trasladaría. Para ustedes nada sería imposible. 2117:21 Algunos manuscritos agregan lo siguiente: Pero esta clase no sale sino con oración y ayuno. Véase Mr 9:29.
22Estando reunidos en Galilea, Jesús les dijo: «El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los hombres. 23Lo matarán, pero al tercer día resucitará». Y los discípulos se entristecieron mucho.
El impuesto del Templo
24Cuando Jesús y sus discípulos llegaron a Capernaúm, los que cobraban el impuesto del Templo17:24 el impuesto del Templo. Lit. las dos dracmas. se acercaron a Pedro y preguntaron:
—¿Su maestro no paga el impuesto del Templo?
25—Sí, lo paga —respondió Pedro.
Al entrar Pedro en la casa, se adelantó Jesús a preguntarle:
—¿Tú qué opinas, Simón? Los reyes de la tierra, ¿a quiénes cobran tributos e impuestos: a los suyos o a los demás?
26—A los demás —contestó Pedro.
—Entonces los suyos están exentos —dijo Jesús—. 27Pero para no escandalizar a esta gente, vete al lago y echa el anzuelo. Saca el primer pez que pique; ábrele la boca y encontrarás una moneda.17:27 una moneda. Lit. un estatero (moneda que equivale a cuatro dracmas). Tómala y dásela a ellos por mi impuesto y por el tuyo.
