Jesus Heals a Man Controlled by Demons
1They went across the Sea of Galilee to the area of the Gerasenes. 2Jesus got out of the boat. A man controlled by an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3The man lived in the tombs. No one could keep him tied up anymore. Not even a chain could hold him. 4His hands and feet had often been chained. But he tore the chains apart. And he broke the iron cuffs on his ankles. No one was strong enough to control him. 5Night and day he screamed among the tombs and in the hills. He cut himself with stones.
6When he saw Jesus a long way off, he ran to him. He fell on his knees in front of him. 7He shouted at the top of his voice, “Jesus, Son of the Most High God, what do you want with me? Swear to God that you won’t hurt me!” 8This was because Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you evil spirit!”
9Then Jesus asked the demon, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,” he replied. “There are many of us.” 10And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs. Let us go into them.” 13Jesus allowed it. The evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs. There were about 2,000 pigs in the herd. The whole herd rushed down the steep bank. They ran into the lake and drowned.
14Those who were tending the pigs ran off. They told the people in the town and countryside what had happened. The people went out to see for themselves. 15Then they came to Jesus. They saw the man who had been controlled by many demons. He was sitting there. He was now dressed and thinking clearly. All this made the people afraid. 16Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the man. They told about the pigs as well. 17Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area.
18Jesus was getting into the boat. The man who had been controlled by demons begged to go with him. 19Jesus did not let him. He said, “Go home to your own people. Tell them how much the Lord has done for you. Tell them how kind he has been to you.” 20So the man went away. In the area known as the Ten Cities, he began to tell how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
Jesus Heals a Dead Girl and a Suffering Woman
21Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee in a boat. It landed at the other side. There a large crowd gathered around him. 22Then a man named Jairus came. He was a synagogue leader. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23He begged Jesus, “Please come. My little daughter is dying. Place your hands on her to heal her. Then she will live.” 24So Jesus went with him.
A large group of people followed. They crowded around him. 25A woman was there who had a sickness that made her bleed. It had lasted for 12 years. 26She had suffered a great deal, even though she had gone to many doctors. She had spent all the money she had. But she was getting worse, not better. 27Then she heard about Jesus. She came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes. 28She thought, “I just need to touch his clothes. Then I will be healed.” 29Right away her bleeding stopped. She felt in her body that her suffering was over.
30At once Jesus knew that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd. He asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31“You see the people,” his disciples answered. “They are crowding against you. And you still ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
32But Jesus kept looking around. He wanted to see who had touched him. 33Then the woman came and fell at his feet. She knew what had happened to her. She was shaking with fear. But she told him the whole truth. 34He said to her, “Dear woman, your faith has healed you. Go in peace. You are free from your suffering.”
35While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus. He was the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36Jesus heard what they were saying. He told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.”
37He let only Peter, James, and John, the brother of James, follow him. 38They came to the home of the synagogue leader. There Jesus saw a lot of confusion. People were crying and sobbing loudly. 39He went inside. Then he said to them, “Why all this confusion and sobbing? The child is not dead. She is only sleeping.” 40But they laughed at him.
He made them all go outside. He took only the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him. And he went in where the child was. 41He took her by the hand. Then he said to her, “Talitha koum!” This means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” 42The girl was 12 years old. Right away she stood up and began to walk around. They were totally amazed at this. 43Jesus gave strict orders not to let anyone know what had happened. And he told them to give her something to eat.
Lʼindemoniato e i maiali
1Giunsero sullʼaltra riva del lago, nel paese dei Geraseni, 2Gesù era appena sceso dalla barca, che subito gli corse incontro un indemoniato che veniva da un cimitero.
3-4Il disgraziato viveva fra le tombe, ed era dotato di una tale forza che ogni volta che veniva incatenato o legato, e ciò avveniva spesso, riusciva a spezzare le catene e a scapparsene via. Nessuno era capace dʼimmobilizzarlo. 5Giorno e notte vagava fra i sepolcri e su per le colline selvagge, urlando e tagliuzzandosi il corpo con pietre affilate.
6Quando Gesù era ancora al largo, lontano dalla riva, lʼuomo lʼaveva visto e gli era subito corso incontro. Non appena gli fu davanti lʼindemoniato cadde ai suoi piedi.
7-8Allora Gesù parlò al demonio che era dentro lʼuomo: «Esci, spirito maligno!» A queste parole seguì un lungo terribile urlo del demonio: «Che cosa vuoi farmi, Gesù, figlio del Dio Altissimo? Per lʼamor di Dio, non torturarmi!»
9«Come ti chiami?» chiese Gesù; e il demonio rispose: «Legione, perché siamo in molti».
10Allora i demòni lo pregarono con insistenza di non mandarli troppo lontano da quel posto.
11Lì vicino cʼera un grosso branco di maiali che stava pascolando sulla collina sopra il lago. I demòni gli chiesero: 12«Mandaci in quei porci!»
13Gesù lo permise: gli spiriti malvagi uscirono dallʼuomo per entrare nei maiali, e tutto il branco rotolò per la china del monte, finendo nel lago, dove annegò. Erano circa duemila maiali!
14I guardiani dei porci corsero nella città e per le campagne circostanti a raccontare il fatto. Perciò la gente venne a vedere coi propri occhi che cosa era accaduto. 15Quando giunsero dovʼera Gesù e videro lʼex indemoniato seduto normalmente, rivestito e completamente sano di mente, si spaventarono. 16Intanto quelli che avevano assistito al fatto lo riferivano in giro. 17La folla, allora, cominciò a implorare Gesù di andarsene e di lasciarli in pace. 18Così Gesù risalì in barca. Lʼuomo guarito lo pregava di permettergli di andare con lui, 19ma Gesù non glielo permise: «Vai a casa dai tuoi», ordinò, «e racconta agli altri tutto ciò che Dio ha fatto per te e quanto è stato pietoso nei tuoi confronti!»
20Allora lʼuomo se ne andò e cominciò ad annunciare in tutto il territorio delle Dieci Città (la Decapoli) le grandi cose che Gesù aveva fatto per lui; e tutti ne erano profondamente meravigliati.
Guarigioni miracolose
21Quando Gesù ebbe attraversato il lago in barca e fu giunto sullʼaltra riva, una gran folla si riunì attorno a lui.
22Il capo della locale sinagoga, un certo Iairo, gli si avvicinò e si gettò ai suoi piedi, 23implorandolo di guarire la sua figlioletta.
«È già in punto di morte», disse fra i singhiozzi. «Ti prego, vieni a toccarla con le tue mani, ed ella vivrà!»
24Gesù andò con lʼuomo, mentre la folla lo seguiva e lo stringeva da tutte le parti. 25Fra la gente cʼera una donna, che da dieci anni aveva perdite di sangue. 26La poveretta aveva sofferto molto in tutto questo tempo, perché era stata curata da tanti medici, presso cui aveva speso tutti i suoi soldi, ma senza miglioramenti, anzi, stava sempre peggio. 27Questa donna aveva saputo di tutti i meravigliosi miracoli di Gesù, perciò gli si avvicinò da dietro, tra la folla, e gli toccò il vestito, 28perché pensava: «Se riesco anche solo a toccare il suo vestito, sarò guarita!» 29E fu proprio così: non appena lo toccò, la emorragia si fermò e la donna sentì di essere guarita.
30Gesù sʼaccorse che parte del suo potere di risanare era uscito da lui, perciò si rivolse alla folla, chiedendo: «Chi mi ha toccato i vestiti?»
31I discepoli gli dissero: «Con tutta questa gente che ti stringe, stai a chiedere chi ti ha toccato?»
32Ma Gesù continuava a guardarsi intorno per vedere chi era stato. 33Fu allora che la donna, impaurita e ancora tremante per lʼemozione per ciò che le era capitato, si fece avanti e cadde ai suoi piedi, spiegando che cosa aveva fatto. 34Allora Gesù le disse: «Figliuola, la tua fede ti ha salvato; vai in pace guarita!»
35Mentre Gesù stava ancora parlando, giunsero delle persone dalla casa di Iairo, con la notizia che ormai era troppo tardi: la bambina era morta e non cʼera più ragione che Gesù si scomodasse. 36Ma Gesù ignorò i loro commenti e disse a Iairo: «Non temere. Abbi soltanto fiducia in me!»
37Poi permise soltanto a Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni di accompagnarlo in casa di Iairo. 38Quando arrivarono, Gesù vide che ovunque regnava una gran confusione, tutti si lamentavano e piangevano per la morte della piccola. 39Allora entrò e disse a quella gente:
«Perché tutti questi pianti e grida? La bimba non è morta, sta soltanto dormendo!»
40Tutti lo derisero amaramente. Ma Gesù li fece uscire, prese con sé i genitori della piccola e i suoi tre discepoli, ed entrò nella stanzetta dove giaceva la bambina. 41-42La prese per la mano e le disse: «Alzati, ragazzina!» (aveva dodici anni). Ed ella si alzò in piedi e cominciò a camminare. I genitori erano fuori di sé dalla gioia.
43Gesù allora ordinò severamente di non dire a nessuno ciò che era accaduto, poi disse loro di darle qualcosa da mangiare.
