A Woman Pours Perfume on Jesus at Bethany
1The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were plotting to arrest Jesus secretly. They wanted to kill him. 2“But not during the feast,” they said. “The people may stir up trouble.”
3Jesus was in Bethany. He was at the table in the home of Simon, who had a skin disease. A woman came with a special sealed jar. It contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.
4Some of the people there became angry. They said to one another, “Why waste this perfume? 5It could have been sold for more than a year’s pay. The money could have been given to poor people.” So they found fault with the woman.
6“Leave her alone,” Jesus said. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7You will always have poor people with you. You can help them any time you want to. But you will not always have me. 8She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body to prepare me to be buried. 9What I’m about to tell you is true. What she has done will be told anywhere the good news is preached all over the world. It will be told in memory of her.”
10Judas Iscariot was one of the 12 disciples. He went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them. 11They were delighted to hear that he would do this. They promised to give Judas money. So he watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them.
The Last Supper
12It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That was the time to sacrifice the Passover lamb. Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?”
13So he sent out two of his disciples. He told them, “Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14He will enter a house. Say to its owner, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is my guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?” ’ 15He will show you a large upstairs room. It will have furniture and will be ready. Prepare for us to eat there.”
16The disciples left and went into the city. They found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal.
17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the 12 disciples. 18While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you who is eating with me will hand me over to my enemies.”
19The disciples became sad. One by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20“It is one of you,” Jesus replied. “It is the one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, “Take it. This is my body.”
23Then he took a cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. All of them drank from it.
24“This is my blood of the covenant,” he said to them. “It is poured out for many. 25What I’m about to tell you is true. I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it in God’s kingdom.”
26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Says That the Disciples Will Turn Away
27“You will all turn away,” Jesus told the disciples. “It is written,
“ ‘I will strike the shepherd down.
Then the sheep will be scattered.’ (Zechariah 13:7)
28But after I rise from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29Peter said, “All the others may turn away. But I will not.”
30“What I’m about to tell you is true,” Jesus answered. “It will happen today, in fact tonight. Before the rooster crows twice, you yourself will say three times that you don’t know me.”
31But Peter would not give in. He said, “I may have to die with you. But I will never say I don’t know you.” And all the others said the same thing.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33He took Peter, James and John along with him. He began to be very upset and troubled. 34“My soul is very sad. I feel close to death,” he said to them. “Stay here. Keep watch.”
35He went a little farther. Then he fell to the ground. He prayed that, if possible, the hour might pass by him. 36“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.”
37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
39Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him.
41Jesus returned the third time. He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look! The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners. 42Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!”
Jesus Is Arrested
43Just as Jesus was speaking, Judas appeared. He was one of the 12 disciples. A crowd was with him. They were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders had sent them.
44Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, had arranged a signal with them. “The one I kiss is the man,” he said. “Arrest him and have the guards lead him away.” 45So Judas went to Jesus at once. Judas said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed Jesus. 46The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing nearby pulled his sword out. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48“Am I leading a band of armed men against you?” asked Jesus. “Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with you. I taught in the temple courtyard, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true.” 50Then everyone left him and ran away.
51A young man was following Jesus. The man was wearing nothing but a piece of linen cloth. When the crowd grabbed him, 52he ran away naked. He left his clothing behind.
Jesus Is Taken to the Sanhedrin
53The crowd took Jesus to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the law came together. 54Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards. He warmed himself at the fire.
55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for something to use against Jesus. They wanted to put him to death. But they did not find any proof. 56Many witnesses lied about him. But their stories did not agree.
57Then some of them stood up. Here is what those false witnesses said about him. 58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made by human hands. In three days I will build another temple, not made by human hands.’ ” 59But what they said did not agree.
60Then the high priest stood up in front of them. He asked Jesus, “Aren’t you going to answer? What are these charges these men are bringing against you?” 61But Jesus remained silent. He gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah? Are you the Son of the Blessed One?”
62“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64“You have heard him say a very evil thing against God. What do you think?”
They all found him guilty and said he must die. 65Then some began to spit at him. They blindfolded him. They hit him with their fists. They said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
Peter Says He Does Not Know Jesus
66Peter was below in the courtyard. One of the high priest’s female servants came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.
“You also were with Jesus, that Nazarene,” she said.
68But Peter said he had not been with him. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said. He went out to the entrance to the courtyard.
69The servant saw him there. She said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70Again he said he was not.
After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter, “You must be one of them. You are from Galilee.”
71Then Peter began to curse. He said to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
72Right away the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had spoken to him. “The rooster will crow twice,” he had said. “Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Peter broke down and cried.
Jesus é ungido em Betânia
(Mt 26.2-16; Lc 7.37-38; 22.1-13; Jo 11.45-53; 12.1-8)
1Dois dias depois começava a festejar-se a Páscoa, celebração durante a qual não se comia pão que levasse fermento. Os principais sacerdotes e os especialistas na Lei não desistiam de procurar ocasião para prender Jesus secretamente e entregá-lo à morte. 2“Todavia, não o poderemos fazer durante a festa da Páscoa”, diziam, “para que não haja tumulto.”
3Entretanto, Jesus encontrava-se em Betânia em casa de Simão, o leproso. Durante a ceia, entrou uma mulher com um belo vaso de alabastro com um perfume muito caro feito de nardo puro, a qual, quebrando o selo, lhe derramou o perfume sobre a cabeça. 4Alguns dos que estavam à mesa ficaram zangados por aquilo a que chamavam um desperdício. 5“Mais valia tê-lo vendido por 300 moedas de prata14.5 Trezentos denários, o valor de um ano de salário. e dado o produto aos pobres!”, murmuravam, condenando-a com dureza.
6Mas Jesus respondeu: “Deixem-na em paz! Porque estão a causar-lhe problemas, se ela me fez uma boa ação? 7É que os pobres sempre os terão convosco, e quando o desejarem poderão fazer-lhes o bem. Mas a mim nem sempre me terão. 8Ela fez o que lhe foi possível e perfumou antecipadamente o meu corpo para a sepultura. 9É realmente como vos digo: onde quer que o evangelho seja pregado no mundo inteiro, este gesto será lembrado e elogiado.”
10Então Judas Iscariotes, um dos discípulos, foi ter com os principais sacerdotes, para combinar a melhor forma de lhes entregar Jesus. 11Quando esses sacerdotes souberam o motivo da sua vinda, ficaram alvoroçados e radiantes, e prometeram-lhe uma recompensa. Então começou a preparar o momento e o local certos para trair Jesus.
A ceia do Senhor
(Mt 26.17-29; Lc 22.7-23; Lc 22.17-23; 1 Co 11.23-25)
12No primeiro dia da celebração dos pães sem fermento, em que se matava o cordeiro da Páscoa, os seus discípulos perguntaram: “Onde queres que te vamos preparar a refeição da Páscoa?”
13Jesus mandou dois dos discípulos à cidade fazer os preparativos: “No caminho, passarão por um homem transportando um cântaro de água. Sigam-no. 14E na casa onde entrar digam ao dono: ‘O Mestre pergunta: “Onde fica a sala onde irei comer a refeição da Páscoa com os meus discípulos?” ’ 15Ele vos levará ao andar de cima, a uma sala grande, toda arranjada e preparada. É ali que devem preparar a nossa ceia.”
16Os discípulos partiram, entraram na cidade e, tendo encontrado tudo como Jesus tinha dito, prepararam a ceia da Páscoa.
17Ao anoitecer, Jesus chegou com os doze discípulos. 18Quando estavam sentados, a comer em volta da mesa, Jesus revelou-lhes: “É realmente como vos digo: um de vocês, um dos que está aqui a comer comigo, vai trair-me!”
19Eles começaram a ficar tristes e a perguntar-lhe um após outro: “Serei eu?”
20Ele respondeu: “É um dos doze, que está agora a molhar comigo o pão no prato. 21O Filho do Homem tem de morrer, tal como as Escrituras disseram há muito. Mas ai do homem que me vai trair! Mais valia nunca ter nascido!”
22Enquanto comiam, Jesus pegou no pão e, dando graças a Deus por ele, partiu-o e deu-o aos discípulos: “Tomem; este é o meu corpo.”
23E levantando um cálice de vinho, agradeceu a Deus por ele, distribuiu-o pelos discípulos e todos beberam dele. 24E disse-lhes:
“Isto é o meu sangue que sela a aliança e que é derramado em favor de muitos. 25É realmente como vos digo: não beberei outra vez vinho senão no dia em que o beber de novo no reino de Deus.” 26Depois de cantarem um hino, foram até ao monte das Oliveiras.
Jesus prediz a negação de Pedro
(Mt 26.30-35; Lc 22.31-34; Jo 13.37-38)
27Então Jesus disse-lhes: “Todos irão abandonar-me, porque as Escrituras dizem: ‘Ferirei o pastor e espalhar-se-ão as ovelhas.’14.27 Zc 13.7. 28Mas depois de eu ressuscitar, irei para a Galileia e lá me encontrarei convosco.”
29Pedro disse-lhe: “Façam os outros o que fizerem, nunca te abandonarei!”
30Mas Jesus disse: “A verdade é que esta mesma noite, antes que o galo cante pela segunda vez, negar-me-ás três vezes!”
31“Não!”, insistiu Pedro. “Nem que tenha de morrer contigo, nunca te negarei!” E todos garantiram o mesmo.
Getsemane
32Entretanto, chegaram ao lugar chamado Getsemane, onde disse aos discípulos: “Sentem-se aqui enquanto vou orar.”
33Levando consigo Pedro, Tiago e João, começou a encher-se de pavor e angústia. 34E disse-lhes: “A minha alma está cheia de uma tristeza mortal. Fiquem aqui e vigiem.”
35Indo um pouco mais adiante, prostrou-se na terra e orou para que, se fosse possível, não chegasse a terrível hora que o esperava: 36“Pai, a ti tudo é possível! Afasta de mim este cálice. Todavia, desejo a tua vontade e não a minha.”
37Voltando então para junto dos três discípulos, encontrou-os a dormir: “Simão! Adormeceste? Nem mesmo uma hora pudeste velar comigo? 38Vigiem e orem para não serem vencidos pela tentação, pois embora o espírito seja corajoso o corpo é fraco!”
39E retirou-se outra vez para orar, repetindo as suas súplicas. 40Voltou de novo para junto dos discípulos e encontrou-os outra vez a dormir, porque tinham os olhos pesados de sono. E não sabiam o que dizer.
41Na terceira vez que voltou a ir ter com eles, disse: “Ainda estão a dormir e a descansar? Basta! Chegou a hora! Vou ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores! 42Levantem-se, vamos andando! Olhem, já aí vem aquele que me traiu!”
Jesus é traído e preso
(Mt 26.47-56; Lc 22.47-50; Jo 18.3-11)
43Naquele momento, enquanto assim falava, Judas, um dos doze, chegou com muito povo armado de espadas e paus, enviado pelos principais sacerdotes, pelos especialistas na Lei e pelos anciãos. 44Judas tinha-lhes dito que o entregaria com um sinal: “Saberão quem é quando o cumprimentar com um beijo. Então podem prendê-lo e levá-lo em segurança.”
45Judas chegou e aproximou-se logo de Jesus, exclamando: “Mestre!” E beijou-o. 46Então prenderam Jesus, segurando-o bem.
47Alguém, contudo, puxou de uma espada e, atacando o servo do sumo sacerdote, cortou-lhe a orelha.
48Jesus perguntou-lhes: “Sou algum assaltante perigoso para que venham assim prender-me armados desta maneira com espadas e paus para me levarem preso? 49Todos os dias estava convosco a ensinar no templo e não me prenderam. Mas estas coisas estão a acontecer para que se cumpra o que está escrito a meu respeito.”
50Naquela altura, todos o abandonaram e fugiram. 51Havia, contudo, um jovem que o seguia à distância, envolvido apenas num lençol. Quando a multidão tentou agarrá-lo, 52ele escapou, largando o lençol, e fugiu nu.
O tribunal judaico
(Mt 26.57-68; Lc 22.54-55, 63-71; Jo 18.12-13, 19-24)
53Jesus foi conduzido à residência do sumo sacerdote, onde todos os principais sacerdotes, outros líderes e os especialistas na Lei já se juntavam. 54Pedro seguia-o de longe e, entrando pelo portão da casa do sumo sacerdote, sentou-se junto a uma fogueira entre os criados para se esquentar.
55Os principais sacerdotes e todo o conselho dos anciãos reuniram-se ali e em vão tentavam encontrar alguma acusação contra Jesus que bastasse para o condenar à morte. 56Apresentaram-se voluntariamente muitas falsas testemunhas, mas contradiziam-se umas às outras. 57Por fim, levantaram-se uns homens que, mentindo, afirmaram: 58“Ouvimo-lo dizer: ‘Destruirei este templo erguido por mãos humanas e em três dias construirei outro, feito sem ser por mãos humanas.’ ” 59Mesmo assim, não conseguiam fazer acertar as declarações!
60Então o sumo sacerdote levantou-se diante do tribunal e perguntou a Jesus: “Recusas responder a esta acusação? Que tens a dizer em tua defesa?” 61Jesus nada disse, pelo que o sumo sacerdote lhe perguntou: “És o Cristo, o Filho do Deus bendito?”
62Jesus respondeu: “Sou e hão de ver o Filho do Homem sentado à direita de Deus Todo-Poderoso, voltando nas nuvens do céu.”
63Então o sumo sacerdote rasgou as suas vestes e disse: “Para que precisamos nós de outras testemunhas? 64Ouviram a sua blasfémia! Qual é a vossa sentença?” A uma voz, votaram pela sentença de morte.
65Então alguns começaram a cuspir nele e, vendando-lhe os olhos, davam-lhe socos na cara. “Profetiza-nos, quem foi que te bateu agora?”, zombavam. E até os guardas o agrediam a murro enquanto o levavam para fora.
Pedro nega Jesus
(Mt 26.69-75; Lc 22.54-62; Jo 18.15-18, 25-27)
66Entretanto, Pedro continuava lá em baixo no pátio. Uma das criadas do sumo sacerdote, 67reparando nele, enquanto se aquecia na fogueira, olhou-o e exclamou: “Tu estavas com Jesus, o nazareno.”
68Mas Pedro negou: “Não entendo o que queres dizer.” E saiu para o fundo do pátio. Nesse momento, um galo cantou.
69A criada reparou de novo nele ali em pé e começou a dizer: “Lá está ele, o discípulo de Jesus!” 70Pedro tornou a negar.
Um pouco depois, outros que se encontravam em volta da fogueira começaram a dizer a Pedro: “Tu és um deles, porque vens da Galileia.”
71Ele começou a praguejar e a jurar, dizendo: “Eu nem sequer conheço esse homem de que estão a falar.” 72E imediatamente um galo cantou pela segunda vez. De súbito, Pedro lembrou-se das palavras de Jesus: “Antes que o galo cante duas vezes, três vezes me negarás.” E não aguentando mais começou a chorar.
