A Woman Pours Perfume on Jesus at Bethany
1The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were plotting to arrest Jesus secretly. They wanted to kill him. 2“But not during the feast,” they said. “The people may stir up trouble.”
3Jesus was in Bethany. He was at the table in the home of Simon, who had a skin disease. A woman came with a special sealed jar. It contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.
4Some of the people there became angry. They said to one another, “Why waste this perfume? 5It could have been sold for more than a year’s pay. The money could have been given to poor people.” So they found fault with the woman.
6“Leave her alone,” Jesus said. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7You will always have poor people with you. You can help them any time you want to. But you will not always have me. 8She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body to prepare me to be buried. 9What I’m about to tell you is true. What she has done will be told anywhere the good news is preached all over the world. It will be told in memory of her.”
10Judas Iscariot was one of the 12 disciples. He went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them. 11They were delighted to hear that he would do this. They promised to give Judas money. So he watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them.
The Last Supper
12It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That was the time to sacrifice the Passover lamb. Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?”
13So he sent out two of his disciples. He told them, “Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14He will enter a house. Say to its owner, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is my guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?” ’ 15He will show you a large upstairs room. It will have furniture and will be ready. Prepare for us to eat there.”
16The disciples left and went into the city. They found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal.
17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the 12 disciples. 18While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you who is eating with me will hand me over to my enemies.”
19The disciples became sad. One by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20“It is one of you,” Jesus replied. “It is the one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, “Take it. This is my body.”
23Then he took a cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. All of them drank from it.
24“This is my blood of the covenant,” he said to them. “It is poured out for many. 25What I’m about to tell you is true. I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it in God’s kingdom.”
26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Says That the Disciples Will Turn Away
27“You will all turn away,” Jesus told the disciples. “It is written,
“ ‘I will strike the shepherd down.
Then the sheep will be scattered.’ (Zechariah 13:7)
28But after I rise from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29Peter said, “All the others may turn away. But I will not.”
30“What I’m about to tell you is true,” Jesus answered. “It will happen today, in fact tonight. Before the rooster crows twice, you yourself will say three times that you don’t know me.”
31But Peter would not give in. He said, “I may have to die with you. But I will never say I don’t know you.” And all the others said the same thing.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33He took Peter, James and John along with him. He began to be very upset and troubled. 34“My soul is very sad. I feel close to death,” he said to them. “Stay here. Keep watch.”
35He went a little farther. Then he fell to the ground. He prayed that, if possible, the hour might pass by him. 36“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.”
37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
39Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him.
41Jesus returned the third time. He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look! The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners. 42Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!”
Jesus Is Arrested
43Just as Jesus was speaking, Judas appeared. He was one of the 12 disciples. A crowd was with him. They were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders had sent them.
44Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, had arranged a signal with them. “The one I kiss is the man,” he said. “Arrest him and have the guards lead him away.” 45So Judas went to Jesus at once. Judas said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed Jesus. 46The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing nearby pulled his sword out. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48“Am I leading a band of armed men against you?” asked Jesus. “Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with you. I taught in the temple courtyard, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true.” 50Then everyone left him and ran away.
51A young man was following Jesus. The man was wearing nothing but a piece of linen cloth. When the crowd grabbed him, 52he ran away naked. He left his clothing behind.
Jesus Is Taken to the Sanhedrin
53The crowd took Jesus to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the law came together. 54Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards. He warmed himself at the fire.
55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for something to use against Jesus. They wanted to put him to death. But they did not find any proof. 56Many witnesses lied about him. But their stories did not agree.
57Then some of them stood up. Here is what those false witnesses said about him. 58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made by human hands. In three days I will build another temple, not made by human hands.’ ” 59But what they said did not agree.
60Then the high priest stood up in front of them. He asked Jesus, “Aren’t you going to answer? What are these charges these men are bringing against you?” 61But Jesus remained silent. He gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah? Are you the Son of the Blessed One?”
62“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64“You have heard him say a very evil thing against God. What do you think?”
They all found him guilty and said he must die. 65Then some began to spit at him. They blindfolded him. They hit him with their fists. They said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
Peter Says He Does Not Know Jesus
66Peter was below in the courtyard. One of the high priest’s female servants came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.
“You also were with Jesus, that Nazarene,” she said.
68But Peter said he had not been with him. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said. He went out to the entrance to the courtyard.
69The servant saw him there. She said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70Again he said he was not.
After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter, “You must be one of them. You are from Galilee.”
71Then Peter began to curse. He said to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
72Right away the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had spoken to him. “The rooster will crow twice,” he had said. “Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Peter broke down and cried.
Una mujer unge a Jesús en Betania

1Faltaban solo dos días para la Pascua y para la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura. Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la Ley buscaban con artimañas cómo arrestar a Jesús para matarlo. 2Por eso decían: «No durante la fiesta, no sea que se amotine el pueblo».
3En Betania, mientras estaba él sentado a la mesa en casa de Simón, el que había tenido una enfermedad en la piel, llegó una mujer con un frasco de alabastro lleno de un perfume muy costoso, hecho de nardo puro. Rompió el frasco y derramó el perfume sobre la cabeza de Jesús.
4Algunos de los presentes comentaban indignados:
—¿Para qué este desperdicio de perfume? 5Podía haberse vendido por el salario de más de un año de trabajo14:5 el salario … trabajo. Lit. trescientos denarios. para dárselo a los pobres.
Y la reprendían con severidad.
6—Déjenla en paz —dijo Jesús—. ¿Por qué la molestan? Ella ha hecho una obra hermosa conmigo. 7A los pobres siempre los tendrán con ustedes, y podrán ayudarlos cuando quieran; pero a mí no me van a tener siempre. 8Ella hizo lo que pudo. Ungió mi cuerpo de antemano, preparándolo para la sepultura. 9Les aseguro que en cualquier parte del mundo donde se predique el evangelio, se contará también, en memoria de esta mujer, lo que ella hizo.
10Judas Iscariote, uno de los doce, fue a los jefes de los sacerdotes para entregarles a Jesús. 11Ellos se alegraron al oírlo y prometieron darle dinero. Así que él buscaba la ocasión propicia para entregarlo.
La Cena del Señor

12El primer día de la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura, cuando se acostumbraba a sacrificar el cordero de la Pascua, los discípulos preguntaron a Jesús:
—¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a hacer los preparativos para que comas la Pascua?
13Él envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: «Vayan a la ciudad y les saldrá al encuentro un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua. Síganlo, 14y allí donde entre díganle al dueño: “El Maestro pregunta: ¿dónde está mi sala en la que voy a comer la Pascua con mis discípulos?”». 15Él les mostrará en la planta alta una sala amplia, amueblada y arreglada. Preparen allí nuestra cena.
16Los discípulos salieron, entraron en la ciudad y encontraron todo tal y como les había dicho Jesús. Así que prepararon la Pascua.
17Al anochecer, llegó Jesús con los doce. 18Mientras estaban sentados a la mesa comiendo, dijo:
—Les aseguro que uno de ustedes, que está comiendo conmigo, me va a traicionar.
19Ellos se pusieron tristes y uno tras otro empezaron a preguntarle:
—¿Acaso seré yo?
20—Es uno de los doce —contestó—, uno que moja el pan conmigo en el plato. 21El Hijo del hombre se irá, tal como está escrito de él, pero ¡ay de aquel que lo traiciona! Más le valdría a ese hombre no haber nacido.
22Mientras comían, Jesús tomó pan y lo bendijo. Luego lo partió y se lo dio a ellos, diciéndoles:
—Tomen; esto es mi cuerpo.
23Después tomó una copa, dio gracias, se la pasó a ellos y todos bebieron de ella.
24—Esto es mi sangre del pacto14:24 del pacto. Var. del nuevo pacto (véase Lc 22:20). que es derramada por muchos —dijo—. 25Les aseguro que no volveré a beber del fruto de la vid hasta aquel día en que beba el vino nuevo en el reino de Dios.
26Después de cantar los salmos, salieron al monte de los Olivos.
Jesús predice la negación de Pedro
14:27-31 – Mt 26:31-35
27—Todos ustedes me abandonarán —dijo Jesús—, porque está escrito:
»“Heriré al pastor
y se dispersarán las ovejas”.14:27 Zac 13:7.
28Pero después de que yo resucite, iré delante de ustedes a Galilea.
29—Aunque todos te abandonen, yo no —declaró Pedro.
30—Te aseguro —le contestó Jesús— que hoy, esta misma noche, antes de que el gallo cante por segunda vez,14:30 Var. no incluye: por segunda vez. me negarás tres veces.
31—Aunque tenga que morir contigo —insistió Pedro con vehemencia—, jamás te negaré.
Y los demás dijeron lo mismo.
Getsemaní
14:32-42 – Mt 26:36-46; Lc 22:40-46
32Fueron a un lugar llamado Getsemaní y Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «Siéntense aquí mientras yo oro». 33Se llevó a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, y comenzó a sentir temor y angustia. 34«Es tal la angustia que me invade que me siento morir —dijo—. Quédense aquí y manténganse despiertos».
35Yendo un poco más allá, se postró en tierra y empezó a orar que, de ser posible, no tuviera él que pasar por aquella hora. 36Decía: «Abba, Padre, todo es posible para ti. No me hagas beber este trago amargo;14:36 No … amargo. Lit. Quita de mí esta copa. pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú».
37Luego volvió a sus discípulos y los encontró dormidos. «Simón —dijo a Pedro—, ¿estás dormido? ¿No pudiste mantenerte despierto ni una hora? 38Permanezcan despiertos y oren para que no caigan en tentación. El espíritu está dispuesto, pero el cuerpo es débil».
39Una vez más se retiró e hizo la misma oración. 40Cuando volvió, otra vez los encontró dormidos, porque se les cerraban los ojos de sueño. No sabían qué decirle. 41Al volver por tercera vez, les dijo: «¿Siguen durmiendo y descansando? ¡Se acabó! Ha llegado la hora. Miren, el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de pecadores. 42¡Levántense! ¡Vámonos! ¡Ahí viene el que me traiciona!».
Arresto de Jesús
14:43-50 – Mt 26:14-56; Lc 22:47-50; Jn 18:3-11
43Todavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando apareció Judas, uno de los doce. Lo acompañaba una turba armada con espadas y palos, enviada por los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la Ley y los líderes religiosos.
44El traidor había dado esta contraseña: «Al que le dé un beso, ese es; arréstenlo y llévenselo bien asegurado». 45Tan pronto como llegó, Judas se acercó a Jesús y dijo:
—¡Rabí!
Y lo besó.
46Entonces los hombres prendieron a Jesús. 47Pero uno de los que estaban ahí desenfundó la espada e hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, cortándole una oreja.
48—¿Acaso soy un bandido14:48 bandido. Alt. insurgente. —dijo Jesús—, para que vengan con espadas y palos a arrestarme? 49Todos los días estaba con ustedes, enseñando en el Templo, y no me arrestaron. Pero es preciso que se cumplan las Escrituras.
50Entonces todos lo abandonaron y huyeron. 51Cierto joven que se cubría con solo una sábana iba siguiendo a Jesús. Lo detuvieron, 52pero él soltó la sábana y escapó desnudo.
Jesús ante el Consejo
14:53-65 – Mt 26:57-68; Jn 18:12-13,19-24

53Llevaron a Jesús ante el sumo sacerdote y se reunieron allí todos los jefes de los sacerdotes, los líderes religiosos y los maestros de la Ley. 54Pedro lo siguió de lejos hasta dentro del patio del sumo sacerdote. Allí se sentó con los guardias y se calentó junto al fuego.
55Los jefes de los sacerdotes y el Consejo en pleno buscaban alguna prueba contra Jesús para poder condenarlo a muerte, pero no la encontraban. 56Muchos testificaban falsamente contra él, pero sus declaraciones no coincidían. 57Entonces unos decidieron dar este falso testimonio contra él:
58—Nosotros le oímos decir: “Destruiré este Templo hecho por hombres y en tres días construiré otro, no hecho por hombres”.
59Pero ni aun así concordaban sus declaraciones.
60Poniéndose en pie en el medio, el sumo sacerdote interrogó a Jesús:
—¿No vas a responder? ¿Qué significan estas denuncias en tu contra?
61Pero Jesús se quedó callado y no contestó nada.
—¿Eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Bendito? —preguntó de nuevo el sumo sacerdote.
62—Sí, yo soy —dijo Jesús—. Y ustedes verán al Hijo del hombre sentado a la derecha del Todopoderoso y viniendo en las nubes del cielo.
63—¿Para qué necesitamos más testigos? —dijo el sumo sacerdote, rasgándose las vestiduras—. 64¡Ustedes han oído la blasfemia! ¿Qué les parece?
Todos ellos lo condenaron como digno de muerte. 65Algunos comenzaron a escupirlo y, luego de vendarle sus ojos, le daban puñetazos.
—¡Profetiza! —gritaban.
Los guardias también lo abofeteaban.
Pedro niega a Jesús
14:66-72 – Mt 26:69-75; Lc 22:56-62; Jn 18:16-18,25-27
66Mientras Pedro estaba abajo en el patio, pasó una de las criadas del sumo sacerdote. 67Cuando vio a Pedro calentándose, se fijó en él.
—Tú también estabas con ese Nazareno, con Jesús —le dijo ella.
68Pero él lo negó:
—No lo conozco. Ni siquiera sé de qué estás hablando.
Y salió a la entrada; en ese momento el gallo cantó.
69Cuando la criada lo vio allí, dijo de nuevo a los presentes:
—Este es uno de ellos.
70Él lo volvió a negar.
Poco después, los que estaban allí dijeron a Pedro:
—Seguro que eres uno de ellos, pues eres galileo.
71Él comenzó a echarse maldiciones.
—¡No conozco a ese hombre del que hablan! —juró.
72Al instante, el gallo cantó por segunda vez. Pedro se acordó de lo que Jesús le había dicho: «Antes de que el gallo cante por segunda vez, me negarás tres veces». Y se echó a llorar.
