A Woman Pours Perfume on Jesus at Bethany
1The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were plotting to arrest Jesus secretly. They wanted to kill him. 2“But not during the feast,” they said. “The people may stir up trouble.”
3Jesus was in Bethany. He was at the table in the home of Simon, who had a skin disease. A woman came with a special sealed jar. It contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.
4Some of the people there became angry. They said to one another, “Why waste this perfume? 5It could have been sold for more than a year’s pay. The money could have been given to poor people.” So they found fault with the woman.
6“Leave her alone,” Jesus said. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7You will always have poor people with you. You can help them any time you want to. But you will not always have me. 8She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body to prepare me to be buried. 9What I’m about to tell you is true. What she has done will be told anywhere the good news is preached all over the world. It will be told in memory of her.”
10Judas Iscariot was one of the 12 disciples. He went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them. 11They were delighted to hear that he would do this. They promised to give Judas money. So he watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them.
The Last Supper
12It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That was the time to sacrifice the Passover lamb. Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?”
13So he sent out two of his disciples. He told them, “Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14He will enter a house. Say to its owner, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is my guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?” ’ 15He will show you a large upstairs room. It will have furniture and will be ready. Prepare for us to eat there.”
16The disciples left and went into the city. They found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal.
17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the 12 disciples. 18While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you who is eating with me will hand me over to my enemies.”
19The disciples became sad. One by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20“It is one of you,” Jesus replied. “It is the one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, “Take it. This is my body.”
23Then he took a cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. All of them drank from it.
24“This is my blood of the covenant,” he said to them. “It is poured out for many. 25What I’m about to tell you is true. I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it in God’s kingdom.”
26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Says That the Disciples Will Turn Away
27“You will all turn away,” Jesus told the disciples. “It is written,
“ ‘I will strike the shepherd down.
Then the sheep will be scattered.’ (Zechariah 13:7)
28But after I rise from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29Peter said, “All the others may turn away. But I will not.”
30“What I’m about to tell you is true,” Jesus answered. “It will happen today, in fact tonight. Before the rooster crows twice, you yourself will say three times that you don’t know me.”
31But Peter would not give in. He said, “I may have to die with you. But I will never say I don’t know you.” And all the others said the same thing.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to them, “Sit here while I pray.” 33He took Peter, James and John along with him. He began to be very upset and troubled. 34“My soul is very sad. I feel close to death,” he said to them. “Stay here. Keep watch.”
35He went a little farther. Then he fell to the ground. He prayed that, if possible, the hour might pass by him. 36“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.”
37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
39Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him.
41Jesus returned the third time. He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look! The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners. 42Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!”
Jesus Is Arrested
43Just as Jesus was speaking, Judas appeared. He was one of the 12 disciples. A crowd was with him. They were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders had sent them.
44Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, had arranged a signal with them. “The one I kiss is the man,” he said. “Arrest him and have the guards lead him away.” 45So Judas went to Jesus at once. Judas said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed Jesus. 46The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing nearby pulled his sword out. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48“Am I leading a band of armed men against you?” asked Jesus. “Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with you. I taught in the temple courtyard, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true.” 50Then everyone left him and ran away.
51A young man was following Jesus. The man was wearing nothing but a piece of linen cloth. When the crowd grabbed him, 52he ran away naked. He left his clothing behind.
Jesus Is Taken to the Sanhedrin
53The crowd took Jesus to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the law came together. 54Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards. He warmed himself at the fire.
55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for something to use against Jesus. They wanted to put him to death. But they did not find any proof. 56Many witnesses lied about him. But their stories did not agree.
57Then some of them stood up. Here is what those false witnesses said about him. 58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made by human hands. In three days I will build another temple, not made by human hands.’ ” 59But what they said did not agree.
60Then the high priest stood up in front of them. He asked Jesus, “Aren’t you going to answer? What are these charges these men are bringing against you?” 61But Jesus remained silent. He gave no answer.
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah? Are you the Son of the Blessed One?”
62“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64“You have heard him say a very evil thing against God. What do you think?”
They all found him guilty and said he must die. 65Then some began to spit at him. They blindfolded him. They hit him with their fists. They said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
Peter Says He Does Not Know Jesus
66Peter was below in the courtyard. One of the high priest’s female servants came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.
“You also were with Jesus, that Nazarene,” she said.
68But Peter said he had not been with him. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said. He went out to the entrance to the courtyard.
69The servant saw him there. She said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70Again he said he was not.
After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter, “You must be one of them. You are from Galilee.”
71Then Peter began to curse. He said to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
72Right away the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had spoken to him. “The rooster will crow twice,” he had said. “Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Peter broke down and cried.

4Ena mwa iwo amene analipo, anakwiya nati kwa wina ndi mnzake, “Chifukwa chiyani akuwononga mafuta onunkhirawa? 5Akanatheka kugulitsidwa ndi ndalama zambiri zoposa malipiro a pa chaka ndipo ndalamazo ndi kupatsa osauka.” Ndipo anamudzudzula iye mwaukali.
6Yesu anati, “Musiyeni, chifukwa chiyani mukumuvutitsa? Wandichitira Ine chinthu chabwino. 7Anthu osauka mudzakhala nawo nthawi zonse, ndipo mukhoza kuwathandiza nthawi iliyonse mungafune. Koma simudzakhala ndi Ine nthawi zonse. 8Wachita zimene akanatha. Wathira mafuta onunkhira pa thupi langa nthawi isanakwane kukonzekera kuyikidwa kwanga mʼmanda. 9Zoonadi, ndikuwuzani kuti kulikonse kumene Uthenga Wabwino udzalalikidwa pa dziko lonse, zimene wachitazi zidzanenedwa pomukumbukira iye.”
10Kenaka Yudasi Isikarioti, mmodzi mwa khumi ndi awiriwo, anapita kwa akulu a ansembe kuti akamupereke Yesu. 11Iwo anakondwa pakumva zimenezi ndipo analonjeza kumupatsa iye ndalama. Ndipo ankadikira mpata wabwino woti amupereke.
Mgonero wa Ambuye
12Pa tsiku loyamba la Phwando la Buledi wopanda yisiti, nthawi imene mwa mwambo inali ya kupha mwana wankhosa wa Paska, ophunzira a Yesu anafunsa Iye kuti, “Mufuna tipite kuti kumene tikakonzekere kuti mukadyere Paska?”
13Pamenepo anatumiza awiri mwa ophunzira ake, nawawuza kuti, “Pitani mu mzinda, ndipo mukakumana ndi mwamuna wonyamula mtsuko wa madzi. Kamutsatireni iye. 14Kawuzeni mwini nyumba imene iye akalowemo kuti, ‘Aphunzitsi akufunsa: kodi chili kuti chipinda changa cha alendo, kumene ndidyere Paska ndi ophunzira anga?’ 15Iye adzakuonetsani chipinda chachikulu chapamwamba, chokhala kale ndi zonse ndi chokonzedwa kale. Katikonzereni ife Paska kumeneko.”
16Ophunzirawo anachoka, napita mu mzindawo ndipo anakapeza zinthu monga mmene Yesu anawawuzira. Choncho anakakonza Paska.
17Ndipo kutada Yesu anafika ndi khumi ndi awiriwo. 18Pamene ankadya pa tebulo Iye anati, “Zoonadi, ndikuwuzani kuti mmodzi wa inu adzandipereka, mmodzi amene akudya ndi Ine.”
19Iwo anamva chisoni, ndipo mmodzi ndi mmodzi anati kwa Iye, “Kodi ndine?”
20Iye anayankha kuti, “Ndi mmodzi mwa khumi ndi awirinu, amene akusunsa buledi mʼmbale pamodzi ndi Ine. 21Mwana wa Munthu adzapita monga momwe zinalembedwera za Iye. Koma tsoka kwa munthu amene adzapereka Mwana wa Munthu! Kukanakhala bwino kwa iye akanapanda kubadwa.”
22Pamene ankadya, Yesu anatenga buledi, nayamika ndipo anamunyema nagawira ophunzira ake nanena kuti, “Tengani, ili ndi thupi langa.”
23Kenaka anatenga chikho, nayamika nachipereka kwa iwo ndipo onse anamweramo.
24Iye anawawuza kuti, “Awa ndi magazi anga a pangano amene akhetsedwa chifukwa cha ambiri. 25Zoonadi, ndikuwuzani kuti sindidzamwanso kuchokera ku chipatso cha mphesa mpaka tsikulo pamene ndidzamwa chatsopano mu ufumu wa Mulungu.”
26Atayimba nyimbo, anapita ku phiri la Olivi.
Yesu Aneneratu zakuti Petro Adzamukana
27Yesu anati, “Nonse mudzandithawa, pakuti kwalembedwa:
“ ‘Kantha Mʼbusa,
ndipo nkhosa zidzabalalika.’
28Koma ndikadzauka, ndidzatsogola kupita ku Galileya.”
29Petro anati, “Ngakhale onse adzakuthaweni, ine sindidzatero.”
30Yesu anayankha kuti, “Zoona ndikukuwuza kuti lero lino, usiku uno, tambala asanalire kawiri, iweyo udzandikana katatu.”
31Koma Petro ananenetsa kuti, “Ngakhale kutakhala kufa nanu, ine sindidzakukanani.” Ndipo ena onse ananena chimodzimodzi.
Mu Getsemani
32Ndipo anapita ku malo otchedwa Getsemani, ndipo Yesu anati kwa ophunzira ake, “Khalani pano pamene Ine ndi kupemphera.” 33Iye anatenga Petro, Yakobo ndi Yohane, ndipo anayamba kumva chisoni kwambiri ndi kuvutika mu mtima. 34Iye anawawuza kuti, “Moyo wanga wagwidwa ndi chisoni chofa nacho. Khalani pano ndipo musagone.”
35Atapita patsogolo pangʼono, anagwa pansi ndi kupemphera kuti ngati ndi kotheka oralo limupitirire. 36Iye anati, “Abba, Atate, zinthu zonse ndi zotheka ndi Inu. Chotsereni chikhochi. Komabe chitani zimene Inu mukufuna, osati zimene Ine ndikufuna.”
37Kenaka anabwerera kwa ophunzira ake ndipo anawapeza akugona, Iye anati kwa Petro, “Simoni, kodi uli mtulo? Kodi simukanatha kukhala maso kwa ora limodzi? 38Khalani tcheru ndi kupemphera kuti musalowe mʼmayesero. Mzimu ukufuna, koma thupi ndi lofowoka.”
39Kenakanso anachoka ndi kukapemphera chimodzimodzi. 40Iye atabwerera, anawapezanso akugona, chifukwa mʼmaso mwawo munadzaza tulo. Iwo sanadziwe choti anene kwa Iye.
41Atabweranso kachitatu, anawafunsa kuti, “Kodi mukugonabe ndi kupumula? Pakwana! Nthawi yafika. Taonani, Mwana wa Munthu akuperekedwa mʼmanja mwa anthu ochimwa. 42Nyamukani! Tiyeni tizipita! Uyu wondipereka Ine wafika!”
Amugwira Yesu
43Iye akuyankhulabe, Yudasi, mmodzi mwa khumi ndi awiriwo, anatulukira. Anali ndi gulu la anthu litanyamula malupanga ndi zibonga, otumidwa ndi akulu a ansembe, aphunzitsi amalamulo, ndi akuluakulu.
44Tsopano womupereka anapangana chizindikiro ndi iwo kuti: “Amene ndikapsompsone ndi iyeyo; mukamugwire ndi kumutenga ali womangidwa.” 45Atapita kwa Yesu nthawi yomweyo, Yudasi anati, “Aphunzitsi,” ndipo anapsompsona. 46Anthu anamugwira Yesu ndi kumumanga. 47Kenaka mmodzi wa iwo amene anayima pafupipo anatulutsa lupanga lake nakhapa wantchito wa wamkulu wa ansembe, nʼkudula khutu lake.
48Yesu anati, “Kodi Ine ndikutsogolera gulu lowukira, kuti mubwera ndi malupanga ndi zibonga kudzandigwira? 49Tsiku ndi tsiku ndinali ndi inu, kuphunzitsa mʼmabwalo a Nyumba ya Mulungu, koma inu simunandigwire. Koma malemba ayenera kukwaniritsidwa.” 50Pamenepo ophunzira ake onse anathawa namusiya yekha.
51Mnyamata wamngʼono amene anangofundira nsalu yokha, wopanda chovala ankamutsatira Yesu. Atamugwira, 52anathawa wamaliseche kusiya nsalu yake mʼmbuyo.
Yesu ku Bwalo la Milandu
53Anamutengera Yesu kwa mkulu wa ansembe, ndipo akulu a ansembe, akuluakulu ndi aphunzitsi amalamulo anasonkhana pamodzi. 54Petro anamutsatira ali patali, mpaka ku bwalo la mkulu wa ansembe. Kumeneko anakhala pansi ndi alonda namawotha moto.
55Akulu a ansembe ndi onse olamulira a Ayuda ankafunafuna umboni womutsutsa Yesu kuti amuphe, koma sanapeze wina uliwonse. 56Ambiri anamunenera Iye maumboni abodza, koma maumboni awo sanagwirizane.
57Kenaka ena anayimirira namunenera umboni wonama womutsutsa Iye kunena kuti, 58“Tamumva akunena kuti, ‘Ndidzawononga Nyumba ya Mulungu iyi yopangidwa ndi anthu ndipo mʼmasiku atatu ndidzamanga ina, osati yopangidwa ndi munthu.’ ” 59Ngakhale iwonso umboni wawo sunagwirizane.
60Kenaka mkulu wa ansembe anayimirira pakati pawo namufunsa Yesu kuti, “Kodi suyankha? Kodi umboni uwu ndi wotani umene anthu akukuchitira?” 61Koma Yesu anakhala chete ndipo sanayankhe.
Mkulu wa ansembe anabwereza kumufunsa Iye kuti, “Kodi ndiwe Khristu Mwana wa Wodalitsikayo?”
62Yesu anati, “Ndine, ndipo mudzaona Mwana wa Munthu atakhala kudzanja lamanja la Wamphamvuzonse ndipo akubwera mʼmitambo ya kumwamba.”
63Mkulu wa ansembe anangʼamba zovala zaunsembe zake. Iye anafunsa kuti, “Chifukwa chiyani tikufuna mboni zinanso? 64Mwamva mwanowo. Muganiza chiyani?”
Onse anavomereza kuti ndi woyenera imfa. 65Kenaka ena anayamba kumulavulira malovu; anamumanga mʼmaso, namumenya ndi zibakera ndipo anati, “Nenera!” Ndipo asilikali anamutenga namumenya.
Petro Akana Yesu
66Petro ali chakumunsi kwa bwalo la milandu, mmodzi wa atsikana a ntchito a mkulu wa ansembe anabwera. 67Ataona Petro akuwotha moto, anamuyangʼanitsitsa.
Iye anati, “Iwenso unali pamodzi ndi Mnazareti, Yesu.”
68Koma iye anakana nati, “Sindikudziwa kapena kumvetsetsa zimene ukuyankhula.” Ndipo anachoka napita ku chipata.
69Pamene mtsikana wantchitoyo anamuona iye, anatinso kwa iwo amene anayimirira pomwepo, “Munthu uyu ndi mmodzi mwa iwo.” 70Anakananso kachiwiri.
Patapita kanthawi pangʼono, amene anayimirira pafupi anati kwa Petro, “Zoonadi ndiwe mmodzi wa iwo, pakuti ndiwe mu Galileya.”
71Iye anayamba kudzitemberera, nalumbira kuti, “Sindimudziwa munthu ameneyu.”
72Nthawi yomweyo tambala analira kachiwiri. Pamenepo Petro anakumbukira mawu amene Yesu ananena anamuwuza kuti, “Tambala asanalire kawiri, iwe udzandikana katatu.” Ndipo iye anasweka mtima nayamba kulira.
