Jesus Is Tempted in the Desert
1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan River. The Spirit led him into the desert. 2There the devil tempted him for 40 days. Jesus ate nothing during that time. At the end of the 40 days, he was hungry.
3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Man must not live only on bread.’ ” (Deuteronomy 8:3)
5Then the devil led Jesus up to a high place. In an instant, he showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. 6He said to Jesus, “I will give you all their authority and glory. It has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve.’ ” (Deuteronomy 6:13)
9Then the devil led Jesus to Jerusalem. He had Jesus stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10It is written,
“ ‘The Lord will command his angels to take good care of you.
11They will lift you up in their hands.
Then you won’t trip over a stone.’ ” (Psalm 91:11,12)
12Jesus answered, “Scripture says, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’ ” (Deuteronomy 6:16)
13When the devil finished all this tempting, he left Jesus until a better time.
Jesus Is Not Accepted in Nazareth
14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Holy Spirit. News about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. On the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue as he usually did. He stood up to read. 17And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. Jesus unrolled it and found the right place. There it is written,
18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me.
He has anointed me
to announce the good news to poor people.
He has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners.
He has sent me so that the blind will see again.
He wants me to set free those who are treated badly.
19And he has sent me to announce the year when he will set his people free.” (Isaiah 61:1,2)
20Then Jesus rolled up the scroll. He gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were staring at him. 21He began by saying to them, “Today this passage of Scripture is coming true as you listen.”
22Everyone said good things about him. They were amazed at the gracious words they heard from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
23Jesus said, “Here is a saying you will certainly apply to me. ‘Doctor, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me this. ‘Do the things here in your hometown that we heard you did in Capernaum.’ ”
24“What I’m about to tell you is true,” he continued. “A prophet is not accepted in his hometown. 25I tell you for sure that there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah. And there had been no rain for three and a half years. There wasn’t enough food to eat anywhere in the land. 26But Elijah was not sent to any of those widows. Instead, he was sent to a widow in Zarephath near Sidon. 27And there were many in Israel who had skin diseases in the days of Elisha the prophet. But not one of them was healed except Naaman the Syrian.”
28All the people in the synagogue were very angry when they heard that. 29They got up and ran Jesus out of town. They took him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They planned to throw him off the cliff. 30But Jesus walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit
31Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught the people. 32They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.
33In the synagogue there was a man controlled by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice. 34“Go away!” he said. “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the Holy One of God!”
35“Be quiet!” Jesus said firmly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down in front of everybody. And it came out without hurting him.
36All the people were amazed. They said to each other, “What he says is amazing! With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits. And they come out!” 37The news about Jesus spread throughout the whole area.
Jesus Heals Many People
38Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. At that time, Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they asked Jesus to help her. 39He bent over her and commanded the fever to leave, and it left her. She got up right away and began to serve them.
40At sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick. He placed his hands on each one and healed them. 41Also, demons came out of many people. The demons shouted, “You are the Son of God!” But he commanded them to be quiet. He would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
42At dawn, Jesus went out to a place where he could be by himself. The people went to look for him. When they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But he said, “I must announce the good news of God’s kingdom to the other towns also. That is why I was sent.” 44And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Tentación de Jesús
4:1-13 – Mt 4:1-11; Mr 1:12-13
1Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán y fue llevado por el Espíritu al desierto. 2Allí estuvo cuarenta días y fue tentado por el diablo. No comió nada durante esos días, pasados los cuales tuvo hambre.
3―Si eres el Hijo de Dios —le propuso el diablo—, dile a esta piedra que se convierta en pan.
4Jesús le respondió:
―Escrito está: “No solo de pan vive el hombre”.4:4 Dt 8:3
5Entonces el diablo lo llevó a un lugar alto y le mostró en un instante todos los reinos del mundo.
6―Sobre estos reinos y todo su esplendor —le dijo—, te daré la autoridad, porque a mí me ha sido entregada, y puedo dársela a quien yo quiera. 7Así que, si me adoras, todo será tuyo.
Jesús le contestó:
8―Escrito está: “Adora al Señor tu Dios y sírvele solamente a él”.4:8 Dt 6:13
9El diablo lo llevó luego a Jerusalén e hizo que se pusiera de pie en la parte más alta del templo, y le dijo:
―Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ¡tírate de aquí! 10Pues escrito está:
»“Ordenará que sus ángeles te cuiden.
Te sostendrán en sus manos
11para que no tropieces con piedra alguna”».4:10-11 Sal 91:11,12
12―También está escrito: “No pongas a prueba al Señor tu Dios”4:12 Dt 6:16 —le replicó Jesús.
13Así que el diablo, habiendo agotado todo recurso de tentación, lo dejó hasta otra oportunidad.
Rechazan a Jesús en Nazaret
14Jesús regresó a Galilea en el poder del Espíritu, y se extendió su fama por toda aquella región. 15Enseñaba en las sinagogas, y todos lo admiraban.
16Fue a Nazaret, donde se había criado, y un sábado entró en la sinagoga, como era su costumbre. Se levantó para hacer la lectura, 17y le entregaron el libro del profeta Isaías. Al desenrollarlo, encontró el lugar donde está escrito:
18«El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí,
por cuanto me ha ungido
para anunciar buenas nuevas a los pobres.
Me ha enviado a proclamar libertad a los cautivos
y dar vista a los ciegos,
a poner en libertad a los oprimidos,
19a pregonar el año del favor del Señor».4:19 Is 61:1,2
20Luego enrolló el libro, se lo devolvió al ayudante y se sentó. Todos los que estaban en la sinagoga lo miraban detenidamente, 21y él comenzó a hablarles: «Hoy se cumple esta Escritura en vuestra presencia».
22Todos dieron su aprobación, impresionados por las hermosas palabras4:22 Todos … palabras. Lit. Todos daban testimonio de él y estaban asombrados de las palabras de gracia. que salían de su boca. «¿No es este el hijo de José?», se preguntaban.
23Jesús continuó: «Seguramente me vais a citar el proverbio: “¡Médico, cúrate a ti mismo! Haz aquí en tu tierra lo que hemos oído que hiciste en Capernaún”. 24Pues bien, os aseguro que a ningún profeta lo aceptan en su propia tierra. 25No cabe duda de que en tiempos de Elías, cuando el cielo se cerró por tres años y medio, de manera que hubo una gran hambre en toda la tierra, muchas viudas vivían en Israel. 26Sin embargo, Elías no fue enviado a ninguna de ellas, sino a una viuda de Sarepta, en los alrededores de Sidón. 27Así mismo, había en Israel muchos enfermos de lepra en tiempos del profeta Eliseo, pero ninguno de ellos fue sanado, sino Naamán el sirio».
28Al oír esto, todos los que estaban en la sinagoga se enfurecieron. 29Se levantaron, lo expulsaron del pueblo y lo llevaron hasta la cumbre de la colina sobre la que estaba construido el pueblo, para tirarlo por el precipicio. 30Pero él pasó por en medio de ellos y se fue.
Jesús expulsa a un espíritu maligno
4:31-37 – Mr 1:21-28
31Jesús pasó a Capernaún, un pueblo de Galilea, y el sábado enseñaba a la gente. 32Estaban asombrados de su enseñanza, porque les hablaba con autoridad.
33Había en la sinagoga un hombre que estaba poseído por un espíritu maligno, quien gritó con todas sus fuerzas:
34―¡Ah! ¿Por qué te entrometes, Jesús de Nazaret? ¿Has venido a destruirnos? Yo sé quién eres tú: ¡el Santo de Dios!
35―¡Cállate! —lo reprendió Jesús—. ¡Sal de ese hombre!
Entonces el demonio derribó al hombre en medio de la gente y salió de él sin hacerle ningún daño.
36Todos se asustaron y se decían unos a otros: «¿Qué clase de palabra es esta? ¡Con autoridad y poder da órdenes a los espíritus malignos, y salen!» 37Y se extendió su fama por todo aquel lugar.
Jesús sana a muchos enfermos

38Cuando Jesús salió de la sinagoga, se fue a casa de Simón, cuya suegra estaba enferma con una fiebre muy alta. Le pidieron a Jesús que la ayudara, 39así que se inclinó sobre ella y reprendió a la fiebre, la cual se le fue. Ella se levantó en seguida y se puso a servirles.
40Al ponerse el sol, la gente llevó a Jesús todos los que padecían de diversas enfermedades; él puso las manos sobre cada uno de ellos y los sanó. 41Además, de muchas personas salían demonios que gritaban: «¡Tú eres el Hijo de Dios!» Pero él los reprendía y no los dejaba hablar porque sabían que él era el Cristo.
42Cuando amaneció, Jesús salió y se fue a un lugar solitario. La gente andaba buscándolo y, cuando llegaron adonde él estaba, procuraban detenerlo para que no se fuera. 43Pero él les dijo: «Es preciso que anuncie también a los demás pueblos las buenas nuevas del reino de Dios, porque para esto fui enviado».
44Y siguió predicando en las sinagogas de los judíos.4:44 los judíos. Lit. Judea. Var. Galilea.
