John the Baptist Prepares the Way
1Tiberius Caesar had been ruling for 15 years. Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea. Herod was the ruler of Galilee. His brother Philip was the ruler of Iturea and Traconitis. Lysanias was ruler of Abilene. 2Annas and Caiaphas were high priests. At that time God’s word came to John, son of Zechariah, in the desert. 3He went into all the countryside around the Jordan River. There he preached that people should be baptized and turn away from their sins. Then God would forgive them. 4Here is what is written in the book of Isaiah the prophet. It says,
“A messenger is calling out in the desert,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord.
Make straight paths for him.
5Every valley will be filled in.
Every mountain and hill will be made level.
The crooked roads will become straight.
The rough ways will become smooth.
6And all people will see God’s salvation.’ ” (Isaiah 40:3–5)
7John spoke to the crowds coming to be baptized by him. He said, “You are like a nest of poisonous snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming of God’s anger? 8Live in a way that shows you have turned away from your sins. And don’t start saying to yourselves, ‘Abraham is our father.’ I tell you, God can raise up children for Abraham even from these stones. 9The ax is already lying at the roots of the trees. All the trees that don’t produce good fruit will be cut down. They will be thrown into the fire.”
10“Then what should we do?” the crowd asked.
11John answered, “Anyone who has extra clothes should share with the one who has none. And anyone who has extra food should do the same.”
12Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” John told them.
14Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
John replied, “Don’t force people to give you money. Don’t bring false charges against people. Be happy with your pay.”
15The people were waiting. They were expecting something. They were all wondering in their hearts if John might be the Messiah. 16John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I am will come. I’m not good enough to untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His pitchfork is in his hand to toss the straw away from his threshing floor. He will gather the wheat into his barn. But he will burn up the husks with fire that can’t be put out.” 18John said many other things to warn the people. He also announced the good news to them.
19But John found fault with Herod, the ruler of Galilee, because of his marriage to Herodias. She was the wife of Herod’s brother. John also spoke strongly to Herod about all the other evil things he had done. 20So Herod locked John up in prison. Herod added this sin to all his others.
The Baptism and Family Line of Jesus
21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened. 22The Holy Spirit came to rest on him in the form of a dove. A voice came from heaven. It said, “You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you.”
23Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his special work for God and others. It was thought that he was the son of Joseph.
Joseph was the son of Heli.
24Heli was the son of Matthat.
Matthat was the son of Levi.
Levi was the son of Melki.
Melki was the son of Jannai.
Jannai was the son of Joseph.
25Joseph was the son of Mattathias.
Mattathias was the son of Amos.
Amos was the son of Nahum.
Nahum was the son of Esli.
Esli was the son of Naggai.
26Naggai was the son of Maath.
Maath was the son of Mattathias.
Mattathias was the son of Semein.
Semein was the son of Josek.
Josek was the son of Joda.
27Joda was the son of Joanan.
Joanan was the son of Rhesa.
Rhesa was the son of Zerubbabel.
Zerubbabel was the son of Shealtiel.
Shealtiel was the son of Neri.
28Neri was the son of Melki.
Melki was the son of Addi.
Addi was the son of Cosam.
Cosam was the son of Elmadam.
Elmadam was the son of Er.
29Er was the son of Joshua.
Joshua was the son of Eliezer.
Eliezer was the son of Jorim.
Jorim was the son of Matthat.
Matthat was the son of Levi.
30Levi was the son of Simeon.
Simeon was the son of Judah.
Judah was the son of Joseph.

Reu was the son of Peleg.
Peleg was the son of Eber.

36Shelah was the son of Cainan.
Cainan was the son of Arphaxad.
Arphaxad was the son of Shem.
Shem was the son of Noah.
Noah was the son of Lamech.
37Lamech was the son of Methuselah.
Methuselah was the son of Enoch.
Enoch was the son of Jared.
Jared was the son of Mahalalel.
Mahalalel was the son of Kenan.
38Kenan was the son of Enosh.
Enosh was the son of Seth.
Seth was the son of Adam.
Adam was the son of God.
يحيی راه را برای مسيح آماده می‌كند
1-2در سال پانزدهم فرمانروايی تيبريوس، امپراتور روم، كلام خدا در بيابان بر يحيی، پسر زكريا، نازل شد. (در آن زمان، پنطيوس پيلاطوس فرماندار يهوديه؛ هيروديس حاكم جليل؛ فيليپ برادر هيروديس، حاكم ايالات ايتوريه و تراخونيتس؛ و ليسانيوس حاكم آبليه بود. حنّا و قيافا نيز كاهنان اعظم بودند.) 3يحيی پس از دريافت پيغام خدا، رسالت خود را آغاز كرد. او در مناطق اطراف رود اردن می‌گشت و مردم را ارشاد می‌نمود و می‌گفت كه توبه كنند و تعميد بگيرند تا خدا گناهانشان را بيامرزد.
4يحيی همان كسی است كه اشعيا درباره‌اش پيشگويی كرده و گفته بود: «كسی در بيابان صدا می‌زند و می‌گويد كه راهی برای آمدن خداوند بسازيد! راهی راست در صحرا برايش آماده كنيد! 5کوهها و تپه‌ها را هموار سازيد؛ دره‌ها را پر كنيد! راههای كج را راست و جاده‌های ناهموار را صاف نماييد! 6آنگاه همه مردم نجات خدا را خواهند ديد!»
7بسياری از مردم، برای غسل تعميد نزد يحيی می‌آمدند. يكبار او به عده‌ای از ايشان گفت: «ای مارهای خوش خط و خال، فكر كرديد می‌توانيد بدون توبهٔ واقعی، از عذاب جهنم بگريزيد؟ 8رفتارتان نشان می‌دهد كه واقعاً توبه كرده‌ايد يا نه. اين فكر را نيز از سرتان بيرون كنيد كه چون جدتان ابراهيم است، از غضب خدا در امان خواهيد ماند، زيرا خدا می‌تواند از اين سنگهای بيابان برای ابراهيم فرزندان بوجود آورد! 9اكنون تيشه داوری خدا بر ريشه درخت زندگی شما گذاشته شده است. هر درختی كه ميوه خوب ندهد، بريده و در آتش انداخته خواهد شد!»
10از او پرسيدند: «چه بايد بكنيم؟»
11جواب داد: «اگر دو پيراهن داريد، يكی را بدهيد به كسی كه ندارد. اگر خوراک اضافی نيز داريد، اينچنين كنيد.»
12مأمورين جمع‌آوری باج و خراج كه به بدنامی معروف بودند، نيز برای غسل تعميد نزد او آمدند و پرسيدند: «استاد، چگونه نشان دهيم كه از گناهانمان دست كشيده‌ايم؟»
13پاسخ داد: «با درستكاری‌تان! بيش از آنچه دولت روم تعيين كرده است، از كسی باج و خراج نگيريد.»
14عده‌ای از نظاميان رومی نيز از او پرسيدند: «ما چه كنيم؟»
يحيی جواب داد: «با زور و تهديد از مردم پول نگيريد. تهمت ناروا به كسی نزنيد و به حقوقی كه می‌گيريد، قانع باشيد.»
15در آن روزها، اميد مردم به ظهور مسيح موعود قوت گرفته بود و همه از خود می‌پرسيدند كه آيا يحيی همان مسيح است يا نه؟ 16يحيی در اين باره به مردم گفت: «من شما را با آب تعميد می‌دهم. اما بزودی شخصی خواهد آمد كه شما را با روح‌القدس و آتش تعميد خواهد داد. مقام او بالاتر از من است و من حتی لايق نيستم كه بند كفشهايش را بگشايم. 17او كاه را از گندم جدا كرده، آن را در آتشی كه خاموشی نمی‌پذيرد خواهد سوزانيد و گندم را در انبار ذخيره خواهد نمود.» 18بدين‌سان يحيی با چنين نصايحی، كلام خدا را به مردم اعلام می‌كرد و مژده می‌داد كه ملكوت خدا نزديک است.
19-20(اما پس از اينكه يحيی آشكارا هيروديس را به سبب ازدواج با هيروديا، زن برادر خود فيليپ، و خطاهای فراوان ديگرش سرزنش كرد، هيروديس او را به زندان انداخت و گناه ديگری به گناهان بيشمار خود افزود.)
تعميد عيسی و شجره‌نامهٔ او
21يک روز، پس از آنكه همه تعميد گرفته بودند، عيسی نيز نزد يحيی آمد و تعميد گرفت و مشغول دعا گرديد. در آن حال، آسمان گشوده شد، 22و روح‌القدس به شكل كبوتری نازل شد و بر او قرار گرفت؛ و ندايی نيز از آسمان در رسيد كه: «تو فرزند عزيز من هستی! از تو بسيار خشنودم!»
23عيسی تقريباً سی ساله بود كه خدمت خود را آغاز كرد. مردم او را پسر يوسف می‌دانستند.

پدر متات، لاوی بود.
پدر لاوی، ملكی بود.
پدر ملكی، ينا بود.
پدر ينا، يوسف بود.
25پدر يوسف، متاتيا بود.
پدر متاتيا، آموس بود.
پدر آموس، ناحوم بود.
پدر ناحوم، حسلی بود.
پدر حسلی، نجی بود.
26پدر نجی، مائت بود.
پدر مائت، متاتيا بود.
پدر متاتيا، شمعی بود.
پدر شمعی، يوسف بود.
پدر يوسف، يهودا بود.
پدر يهودا، يوحنا بود.
27پدر يوحنا، ريسا بود.
پدر ريسا، زروبابل بود.
پدر زروبابل، سائلتی‌ئيل بود.
پدر سائلتی‌ئيل، نيری بود.
28پدر نيری، ملكی بود.
پدر ملكی، ادی بود.
پدر ادی، قوسام بود.
پدر قوسام، ايلمودام بود.
پدر ايلمودام، عير بود.
29پدر عير، يوسی بود.
پدر يوسی، العازار بود.
پدر العازار، يوريم بود.
پدر يوريم، متات بود.
پدر متات، لاوی بود.
30پدر لاوی، شمعون بود.
پدر شمعون، يهودا بود.
پدر يهودا، يوسف بود.
پدر يوسف، يونان بود.
پدر يونان، ايلياقيم بود.
31پدر ايلياقيم، مليا بود.

پدر متاتا، ناتان بود.
پدر ناتان، داوود بود.
32پدر داوود، يسی‌ٰ بود.
پدر يسی‌ٰ، عوبيد بود.
پدر عوبيد، بوعز بود.
پدر بوعز، شلمون بود.
پدر شلمون، نحشون بود.
33پدر نحشون، عميناداب بود.
پدر عميناداب، ارام بود.
پدر ارام، حصرون بود.
پدر حصرون، فارص بود.
پدر فارص، يهودا بود.
34پدر يهودا، يعقوب بود.
پدر يعقوب، اسحاق بود.
پدر اسحاق، ابراهيم بود.
پدر ابراهيم، تارح بود.
پدر تارح، ناحور بود.
35پدر ناحور، سروج بود.
پدر سروج، رعو بود.
پدر رعو، فالج بود.
پدر فالج، عابر بود.
پدر عابر، صالح بود.
36پدر صالح، قينان بود.
پدر قينان، ارفکشاد بود.
پدر ارفکشاد، سام بود.
پدر سام، نوح بود.
پدر نوح، لمک بود.
37پدر لمک، متوشالح بود.
پدر متوشالح، خنوخ بود.
پدر خنوخ، يارد بود.
پدر يارد، مهلل‌ئيل بود.

38پدر قينان، انوش بود.
