1Then the whole group got up and led Jesus off to Pilate. 2They began to bring charges against Jesus. They said, “We have found this man misleading our people. He is against paying taxes to Caesar. And he claims to be Messiah, a king.”
3So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4Then Pilate spoke to the chief priests and the crowd. He announced, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”
5But they kept it up. They said, “His teaching stirs up the people all over Judea. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”
6When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was from Galilee. 7He learned that Jesus was from Herod’s area of authority. So Pilate sent Jesus to Herod. At that time Herod was also in Jerusalem.
8When Herod saw Jesus, he was very pleased. He had been wanting to see Jesus for a long time. He had heard much about him. He hoped to see Jesus perform a sign of some kind. 9Herod asked him many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there. With loud shouts they brought charges against him. 11Herod and his soldiers laughed at him and made fun of him. They dressed him in a beautiful robe. Then they sent him back to Pilate. 12That day Herod and Pilate became friends. Before this time they had been enemies.
13Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people. 14He said to them, “You brought me this man. You said he was turning the people against the authorities. I have questioned him in front of you. I have found no basis for your charges against him. 15Herod hasn’t either. So he sent Jesus back to us. As you can see, Jesus has done nothing that is worthy of death. 16-17So I will just have him whipped and let him go.”
18But the whole crowd shouted, “Kill this man! But let Barabbas go!” 19Barabbas had been thrown into prison. He had taken part in a struggle in the city against the authorities. He had also committed murder.
20Pilate wanted to let Jesus go. So he made an appeal to the crowd again. 21But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22Pilate spoke to them for the third time. “Why?” he asked. “What wrong has this man done? I have found no reason to have him put to death. So I will just have him whipped and let him go.”
23But with loud shouts they kept calling for Jesus to be crucified. The people’s shouts won out. 24So Pilate decided to give them what they wanted. 25He set free the man they asked for. The man had been thrown in prison for murder and for fighting against the authorities. Pilate handed Jesus over to them so they could carry out their plans.
Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross
26As the soldiers led Jesus away, they took hold of Simon. Simon was from Cyrene. He was on his way in from the country. They put a wooden cross on his shoulders. Then they made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A large number of people followed Jesus. Some were women whose hearts were filled with sorrow. They cried loudly because of him. 28Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep for yourselves and for your children. 29The time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the women who can’t have children! Blessed are those who never gave birth or nursed babies!’ 30It is written,
“ ‘The people will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
They’ll say to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ (Hosea 10:8)
31People do these things when trees are green. So what will happen when trees are dry?”
32Two other men were also led out with Jesus to be killed. Both of them had broken the law. 33The soldiers brought them to the place called the Skull. There they nailed Jesus to the cross. He hung between the two criminals. One was on his right and one was on his left. 34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.” The soldiers divided up his clothes by casting lots.
35The people stood there watching. The rulers even made fun of Jesus. They said, “He saved others. Let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
36The soldiers also came up and poked fun at him. They offered him wine vinegar. 37They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”
38A written sign had been placed above him. It read,
This is the King of the Jews.
39One of the criminals hanging there made fun of Jesus. He said, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself! Save us!”
40But the other criminal scolded him. “Don’t you have any respect for God?” he said. “Remember, you are under the same sentence of death. 41We are being punished fairly. We are getting just what our actions call for. But this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”
42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43Jesus answered him, “What I’m about to tell you is true. Today you will be with me in paradise.”
Jesus Dies
44It was now about noon. Then darkness covered the whole land until three o’clock. 45The sun had stopped shining. The temple curtain was torn in two. 46Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my life.” After he said this, he took his last breath.
47The Roman commander saw what had happened. He praised God and said, “Jesus was surely a man who did what was right.” 48The people had gathered to watch this sight. When they saw what happened, they felt very sad. Then they went away. 49But all those who knew Jesus stood not very far away, watching these things. They included the women who had followed him from Galilee.
Jesus Is Buried
50A man named Joseph was a member of the Jewish Council. He was a good and honest man. 51Joseph had not agreed with what the leaders had decided and done. He was from Arimathea, a town in Judea. He himself was waiting for God’s kingdom. 52Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 53Joseph took it down and wrapped it in linen cloth. Then he placed it in a tomb cut in the rock. No one had ever been buried there. 54It was Preparation Day. The Sabbath day was about to begin.
55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph. They saw the tomb and how Jesus’ body was placed in it. 56Then they went home. There they prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath day in order to obey the Law.
عيسی به مرگ محكوم میشود
1آنگاه اعضای شورا همگی برخاسته، عيسی را به حضور «پيلاطوس»، فرماندار رومی يهوديه بردند، 2و شكايات خود را عليه او عنوان كرده، گفتند: «اين شخص مردم را تحريک میكند كه به دولت روم ماليات ندهند، و ادعا میكند كه مسيح، يعنی پادشاه ماست.»
3پيلاطوس از عيسی پرسيد: «آيا تو مسيح، پادشاه يهود هستی؟»
عيسی جواب داد: «بلی، چنين است كه میگويی.»
4پيلاطوس رو به كاهنان اعظم و جماعت كرد و گفت: «خوب، اينكه جرم نيست!»
5ايشان پافشاری نموده، گفتند: «اما او در سراسر يهوديه، از جليل تا اورشليم، هر جا میرود، به ضد دولت روم آشوب بپا میكند.»
6پيلاطوس پرسيد: «مگر او اهل جليل است؟»
7وقتی از اين امر اطمينان حاصل كرد، دستور داد او را نزد هيروديس ببرند، زيرا ايالت جليل جزو قلمرو حكومت هيروديس بود. اتفاقاً هيروديس در آن روزها، به مناسبت عيد، در اورشليم به سر میبرد. 8هيروديس از ديدن عيسی بسيار شاد شد، چون درباره او خيلی چيزها شنيده بود و اميدوار بود كه با چشم خود يكی از معجزات او را ببيند. 9او سؤالات گوناگونی از عيسی كرد، اما هيچ جوابی نشنيد.
10در اين ميان، كاهنان اعظم و ديگر علمای دين حاضر شدند و عيسی را به باد تهمت گرفتند. 11هيروديس و سربازانش نيز او را مسخره كرده، مورد اهانت قرار دادند، و لباسی شاهانه به او پوشاندند و نزد پيلاطوس باز فرستادند. 12همان روز پيلاطوس و هيروديس، دشمنی خود را كنار گذارده، با يكديگر صلح كردند.
13آنگاه پيلاطوس، كاهنان اعظم و سران يهود و مردم را فرا خواند 14و به ايشان گفت: «شما اين مرد را به اتهام شورش به ضد حكومت روم نزد من آورديد. من در حضور خودتان از او بازجويی كردم و متوجه شدم كه اتهامات شما عليه او بیاساس است. 15هيروديس نيز به همين نتيجه رسيد و به همين علت او را نزد ما پس فرستاد. اين مرد كاری نكرده است كه مجازاتش اعدام باشد. 16بنابراين، فقط دستور میدهم شلاقش بزنند، و بعد آزادش میكنم.» 17(طبق رسم، در هر عيد پِسَح يک زندانی آزاد میشد.)
18اما مردم يكصدا فرياد برآورده، گفتند: «اعدامش كن و ”باراباس“ را برای ما آزاد كن!» 19(باراباس به جرم شورش و خونريزی در اورشليم، زندانی شده بود.) 20پيلاطوس بار ديگر با مردم سخن گفت، چون میخواست عيسی را آزاد كند. 21اما ايشان بلندتر فرياد زدند: «مصلوبش كن! مصلوبش كن!»
22باز برای بار سوم پيلاطوس گفت: «چرا؟ مگر او مرتكب چه جنايتی شده است؟ من دليلی ندارم كه به مرگ محكومش كنم. دستور میدهم شلاقش بزنند و آزادش میكنم.» 23اما مردم با صدای بلند فرياد میزدند و با اصرار میخواستند كه او مصلوب شود؛ و سرانجام فريادهای ايشان غالب آمد، 24و پيلاطوس به درخواست ايشان، حكم اعدام عيسی را صادر كرد. 25سپس، باراباس را كه به علت شورش و خونريزی در حبس بود، آزاد كرد و عيسی را تحويل داد تا طبق تقاضای ايشان، اعدام شود.
مصلوب شدن عيسی
26سربازان رومی عيسی را بردند. هنگامی كه میرفتند، مردی به نام «شمعون قيروانی» را كه از مزرعه به شهر باز میگشت، مجبور كردند كه صليب عيسی را بردارد و به دنبال او ببرد. 27جمعيتی انبوه در پی او به راه افتادند و زنان بسياری نيز در ميان آنان برای او گريه و ماتم میكردند و به سينه خود میزدند.
28عيسی رو به اين زنان كرد و گفت: «ای دختران اورشليم، برای من گريه نكنيد؛ به حال خود و فرزندانتان گريه كنيد! 29چون روزهايی میآيد كه مردم خواهند گفت: خوشا به حال زنان بیاولاد؛ 30و آرزو خواهند كرد كه کوهها و تپهها بر ايشان افتاده، پنهانشان كنند. 31زيرا اگر شخص بیگناهی مانند من، اين گونه مجازات شود، مجازات افراد خطاكار و گناهكار، همچون نسل شما، چه خواهد بود؟!»
32-33دو جنايتكار را بردند تا با او اعدام كنند. نام محل اعدام، «كاسهٔ سر» بود. در آنجا هر سه را به صليب ميخكوب كردند، عيسی در وسط و آن دو جنايتكار در دو طرف او. 34در چنين حالی، عيسی فرمود: «ای پدر، اين مردم را ببخش، زيرا كه نمیدانند چه میكنند.»
سربازان رومی لباسهای عيسی را به حكم قرعه ميان خود تقسيم كردند. 35مردم ايستاده بودند و تماشا میكردند. سران قوم نيز ايستاده، به او میخنديدند و مسخرهكنان میگفتند: «برای ديگران معجزات زيادی انجام داد؛ حال اگر واقعاً مسيح و برگزيده خداست، خود را نجات دهد!»
36سربازان نيز او را مسخره نموده، شراب ترشيده خود را به او تعارف میكردند، 37و میگفتند: «اگر تو پادشاه يهود هستی، خود را نجات بده!» 38بالای سر او، بر صليب، تختهای كه تقصيرنامهٔ او بود، كوبيدند. روی آن به زبانهای يونانی، رومی و عبری نوشته شده بود: «اينست پادشاه يهود!»
39يكی از آن دو جنايتكار كه در كنار عيسی مصلوب شده بود، به طعنه به او گفت: «اگر تو مسيح هستی، چرا خودت و ما را نجات نمیدهی؟»
40-41اما آن ديگری، او را سرزنش كرد و گفت: «حتی در حال مرگ هم از خدا نمیترسی؟ ما حقمان است كه بميريم، چون گناهكاريم. اما از اين شخص، يک خطا هم سر نزده است.» 42سپس رو به عيسی كرد و گفت: «ای عيسی، وقتی ملكوت خود را آغاز كردی، مرا هم به یاد آور!»
43عيسی جواب داد: «خاطرجمع باش كه تو همين امروز با من در بهشت خواهی بود!»
مرگ عيسی
44به هنگام ظهر، برای مدت سه ساعت، تاريكی همه جا را فرا گرفت، 45و نور خورشيد از تابيدن باز ايستاد. آنگاه پرده ضخيمی كه در جايگاه مقدس خانه خدا آويزان بود، دو تكه شد.
46سپس عيسی با صدايی بلند گفت: «ای پدر، روح خود را به دستهای تو میسپارم.» اين را گفت و جان سپرد.
47افسر رومی كه مأمور اجرای حكم بود، وقتی اين صحنه را ديد خدا را ستايش كرد و گفت: «اين مرد حقيقتاً بیگناه بود!»
48كسانی كه برای تماشا گرد آمده بودند، وقتی اين اتفاقات را ديدند، اندوهگين و سينهزنان، به خانههای خود بازگشتند. 49در اين ميان، دوستان عيسی و زنانی كه از جليل به دنبال او آمده بودند، دورتر ايستاده، اين وقايع را مینگريستند.
تدفين جسد عيسی
50-52آنگاه شخصی به نام يوسف، اهل رامهٔ يهوديه، نزد پيلاطوس رفت و اجازه خواست كه جسد عيسی را دفن كند. يوسف مردی خداشناس بود و انتظار آمدن مسيح را میكشيد. در ضمن، او يكی از اعضای شورای عالی يهود بود، اما با تصميمات و اقدام ساير اعضای شورا موافق نبود. 53او پس از كسب اجازه، جسد عيسی را از بالای صليب پايين آورد، آن را در كفن پيچيد و در قبر تازهای گذاشت كه قبلاً كسی در آن گذاشته نشده بود. اين قبر كه شبيه يک غار كوچک بود، در دامنه تپهای در داخل يک صخره، تراشيده شده بود. 54تمام كار كفن و دفن، همان عصر جمعه انجام شد. يهوديان كارهای روز تعطيل شنبه را عصر روز جمعه تدارک میديدند.
55زنانی كه از جليل به دنبال عيسی آمده بودند، همراه يوسف رفتند و محل قبر را ديدند و مشاهده كردند كه جسد عيسی چگونه در آن گذاشته شد. 56سپس به خانه بازگشتند و دارو و عطريات تهيه كردند كه به رسم آن زمان، به جسد بمالند تا زود فاسد نشود. اما وقتی دارو آماده شد، ديگر روز شنبه فرا رسيده بود. پس مطابق قانون مذهبی يهود، در آن روز به استراحت پرداختند.
