Jesus Teaches About Prayer
1One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples spoke to him. “Lord,” he said, “teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2Jesus said to them, “When you pray, this is what you should say.
“ ‘Father,
may your name be honored.
May your kingdom come.
3Give us each day our daily bread.
4Forgive us our sins,
as we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
Keep us from falling into sin when we are tempted.’ ”
5Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend. You go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread. 6A friend of mine on a journey has come to stay with me. I have no food to give him.’ 7And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked. My children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8I tell you, that person will not get up. And he won’t give you bread just because he is your friend. But because you keep bothering him, he will surely get up. He will give you as much as you need.
9“So here is what I say to you. Ask, and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. 10Everyone who asks will receive. The one who searches will find. And the door will be opened to the one who knocks.
11“Fathers, suppose your son asks for a fish. Which of you will give him a snake instead? 12Or suppose he asks for an egg. Which of you will give him a scorpion? 13Even though you are evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your Father who is in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jesus and Beelzebul
14Jesus was driving out a demon. The man who had the demon could not speak. When the demon left, the man began to speak. The crowd was amazed. 15But some of them said, “Jesus is driving out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons.” 16Others tested Jesus by asking for a sign from heaven.
17Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to them, “Any kingdom that fights against itself will be destroyed. A family that is divided against itself will fall. 18If Satan fights against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because of what you claim. You say I drive out demons by the power of Beelzebul. 19Suppose I do drive out demons with Beelzebul’s help. With whose help do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20But suppose I drive out demons with the help of God’s powerful finger. Then God’s kingdom has come upon you.
21“When a strong man is completely armed and guards his house, what he owns is safe. 22But when someone stronger attacks, he is overpowered. The attacker takes away the armor the man had trusted in. Then he divides up what he has stolen.
23“Whoever is not with me is against me. And whoever does not gather with me scatters.
24“What happens when an evil spirit comes out of a person? It goes through dry areas looking for a place to rest. But it doesn’t find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25When it arrives there, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26Then the evil spirit goes and takes seven other spirits more evil than itself. They go in and live there. That person is worse off than before.”
27As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out. She shouted, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
28He replied, “Instead, blessed are those who hear God’s word and obey it.”
The Sign of Jonah
29As the crowds grew larger, Jesus spoke to them. “The people of today are evil,” he said. “They ask for a sign from God. But none will be given except the sign of Jonah. 30He was a sign from God to the people of Nineveh. In the same way, the Son of Man will be a sign from God to the people of today. 31The Queen of the South will stand up on judgment day with the people now living. And she will prove that they are guilty. She came from very far away to listen to Solomon’s wisdom. And now something more important than Solomon is here. 32The men of Nineveh will stand up on judgment day with the people now living. And the Ninevites will prove that those people are guilty. The men of Nineveh turned away from their sins when Jonah preached to them. And now something more important than Jonah is here.
The Eye Is the Lamp of the Body
33“No one lights a lamp and hides it. No one puts it under a bowl. Instead, they put a lamp on its stand. Then those who come in can see the light. 34Your eye is like a lamp for your body. Suppose your eyes are healthy. Then your whole body also is full of light. But suppose your eyes can’t see well. Then your body also is full of darkness. 35So make sure that the light inside you is not darkness. 36Suppose your whole body is full of light. And suppose no part of it is dark. Then your body will be full of light. It will be just as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
Six Warnings
37Jesus finished speaking. Then a Pharisee invited him to eat with him. So Jesus went in and took his place at the table. 38But the Pharisee was surprised. He noticed that Jesus did not wash before the meal.
39Then the Lord spoke to him. “You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish,” he said. “But inside you are full of greed and evil. 40You foolish people! Didn’t the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41Give freely to poor people to show what is inside you. Then everything will be clean for you.
42“How terrible it will be for you Pharisees! You give God a tenth of your garden plants, such as mint and rue. But you have forgotten to be fair and to love God. You should have practiced the last things without failing to do the first.
43“How terrible for you Pharisees! You love the most important seats in the synagogues. You love having people greet you with respect in the market.
44“How terrible for you! You are like graves that are not marked. People walk over them without knowing it.”
45An authority on the law spoke to Jesus. He said, “Teacher, when you say things like that, you say bad things about us too.”
46Jesus replied, “How terrible for you authorities on the law! You put such heavy loads on people that they can hardly carry them. But you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
47“How terrible for you! You build tombs for the prophets. It was your people of long ago who killed them. 48So you show that you agree with what your people did long ago. They killed the prophets, and now you build the prophets’ tombs. 49So God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send prophets and apostles to them. They will kill some. And they will try to hurt others.’ 50So the people of today will be punished. They will pay for all the prophets’ blood spilled since the world began. 51I mean from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah. He was killed between the altar and the temple. Yes, I tell you, the people of today will be punished for all these things.
52“How terrible for you authorities on the law! You have taken away the key to the door of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered. And you have stood in the way of those who were entering.”
53When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law strongly opposed him. They threw a lot of questions at him. 54They set traps for him. They wanted to catch him in something he might say.
O Ensino de Jesus acerca da Oração
(Mt 6.5-15; 7.7-12)
1Certo dia Jesus estava orando em determinado lugar. Tendo terminado, um dos seus discípulos lhe disse: “Senhor, ensina-nos a orar, como João ensinou aos discípulos dele”.
2Ele lhes disse: “Quando vocês orarem, digam:
“Pai!11.2 Muitos manuscritos dizem Pai nosso, que estás no céu.
Santificado seja o teu nome.
Venha o teu Reino.11.2 Muitos manuscritos dizem Reino. Seja feita a tua vontade assim na terra como no céu.
3Dá-nos cada dia o nosso pão cotidiano.
4Perdoa-nos os nossos pecados,
pois também perdoamos a todos os que nos devem.
E não nos deixes cair em11.4 Grego: E não nos induzas à. tentação11.4 Muitos manuscritos dizem tentação, mas livra-nos do Maligno.”.
5Então lhes disse: “Suponham que um de vocês tenha um amigo e que recorra a ele à meia-noite e diga: ‘Amigo, empreste-me três pães, 6porque um amigo meu chegou de viagem, e não tenho nada para lhe oferecer’.
7“E o que estiver dentro responda: ‘Não me incomode. A porta já está fechada, e eu e meus filhos já estamos deitados. Não posso me levantar e dar a você o que me pede’. 8Eu digo: Embora ele não se levante para dar-lhe o pão por ser seu amigo, por causa da importunação se levantará e lhe dará tudo o que precisar.
9“Por isso digo: Peçam, e será dado; busquem, e encontrarão; batam, e a porta será aberta. 10Pois todo o que pede, recebe; o que busca, encontra; e àquele que bate, a porta será aberta.
11“Qual pai, do meio de vocês, se o filho pedir um11.11 Muitos manuscritos acrescentam pão, lhe dará uma pedra, ou se pedir um peixe, em lugar disso lhe dará uma cobra? 12Ou, se pedir um ovo, lhe dará um escorpião? 13Se vocês, apesar de serem maus, sabem dar boas coisas aos seus filhos, quanto mais o Pai que está nos céus dará o Espírito Santo a quem o pedir!”
A Acusação contra Jesus
(Mt 12.22-32; Mc 3.20-30)
14Jesus estava expulsando um demônio que era mudo. Quando o demônio saiu, o mudo falou, e a multidão ficou admirada. 15Mas alguns deles disseram: “É por Belzebu, o príncipe dos demônios, que ele expulsa demônios”. 16Outros o punham à prova, pedindo-lhe um sinal do céu.
17Jesus, conhecendo os seus pensamentos, disse-lhes: “Todo reino dividido contra si mesmo será arruinado, e uma casa dividida contra si mesma cairá. 18Se Satanás está dividido contra si mesmo, como o seu reino pode subsistir? Digo isso porque vocês estão dizendo que expulso demônios por Belzebu. 19Se eu expulso demônios por Belzebu, por quem os expulsam os filhos11.19 Ou discípulos de vocês? Por isso, eles mesmos estarão como juízes sobre vocês. 20Mas, se é pelo dedo de Deus que eu expulso demônios, então chegou a vocês o Reino de Deus.
21“Quando um homem forte, bem armado, guarda sua casa, seus bens estão seguros. 22Mas, quando alguém mais forte o ataca e o vence, tira-lhe a armadura em que confiava e divide os despojos.
23“Aquele que não está comigo é contra mim, e aquele que comigo não ajunta espalha.
24“Quando um espírito imundo sai de um homem, passa por lugares áridos procurando descanso e, não o encontrando, diz: ‘Voltarei para a casa de onde saí’. 25Quando chega, encontra a casa varrida e em ordem. 26Então vai e traz outros sete espíritos piores do que ele, e entrando passam a viver ali. E o estado final daquele homem torna-se pior do que o primeiro”.
27Enquanto Jesus dizia estas coisas, uma mulher da multidão exclamou: “Feliz é a mulher que te deu à luz e te amamentou”.
28Ele respondeu: “Antes, felizes são aqueles que ouvem a palavra de Deus e lhe obedecem”.
O Sinal de Jonas
(Mt 12.38-42)
29Aumentando a multidão, Jesus começou a dizer: “Esta é uma geração perversa. Ela pede um sinal milagroso, mas nenhum sinal lhe será dado, exceto o sinal de Jonas. 30Pois, assim como Jonas foi um sinal para os ninivitas, o Filho do homem também o será para esta geração. 31A rainha do Sul se levantará no juízo com os homens desta geração e os condenará, pois ela veio dos confins da terra para ouvir a sabedoria de Salomão e agora está aqui quem é maior do que Salomão. 32Os homens de Nínive se levantarão no juízo com esta geração e a condenarão; pois eles se arrependeram com a pregação de Jonas, e agora está aqui quem é maior do que Jonas.
A Candeia do Corpo
33“Ninguém acende uma candeia e a coloca em lugar onde fique escondida ou debaixo de uma vasilha. Ao contrário, coloca-a no lugar apropriado, para que os que entram possam ver a luz. 34Os olhos são a candeia do corpo. Quando os seus olhos forem bons, igualmente todo o seu corpo estará cheio de luz. Mas, quando forem maus, igualmente o seu corpo estará cheio de trevas. 35Portanto, cuidado para que a luz que está em seu interior não sejam trevas. 36Logo, se todo o seu corpo estiver cheio de luz, e nenhuma parte dele estiver em trevas, estará completamente iluminado, como quando a luz de uma candeia brilha sobre você”.
Jesus Condena a Hipocrisia dos Fariseus e dos Peritos na Lei
37Tendo terminado de falar, um fariseu o convidou para comer com ele. Então Jesus foi e reclinou-se à mesa; 38mas o fariseu, notando que Jesus não se lavara cerimonialmente antes da refeição, ficou surpreso.
39Então o Senhor lhe disse: “Vocês, fariseus, limpam o exterior do copo e do prato, mas interiormente estão cheios de ganância e de maldade. 40Insensatos! Quem fez o exterior não fez também o interior? 41Mas deem o que está dentro do prato11.41 Ou o que vocês têm como esmola e verão que tudo ficará limpo em vocês.
42“Ai de vocês, fariseus, porque dão a Deus o dízimo da hortelã, da arruda e de toda a sorte de hortaliças, mas desprezam a justiça e o amor de Deus! Vocês deviam praticar estas coisas, sem deixar de fazer aquelas.
43“Ai de vocês, fariseus, porque amam os lugares de honra nas sinagogas e as saudações em público!
44“Ai de vocês, porque são como túmulos que não são vistos, por sobre os quais os homens andam sem o saber!”
45Um dos peritos na lei lhe respondeu: “Mestre, quando dizes essas coisas, insultas também a nós”.
46“Quanto a vocês, peritos na lei”, disse Jesus, “ai de vocês também!, porque sobrecarregam os homens com fardos que dificilmente eles podem carregar, e vocês mesmos não levantam nem um dedo para ajudá-los.
47“Ai de vocês, porque edificam os túmulos dos profetas, sendo que foram os seus próprios antepassados que os mataram. 48Assim vocês dão testemunho de que aprovam o que os seus antepassados fizeram. Eles mataram os profetas, e vocês lhes edificam os túmulos. 49Por isso, Deus disse em sua sabedoria: ‘Eu mandarei a vocês profetas e apóstolos, dos quais eles matarão alguns, e a outros perseguirão’. 50Pelo que, esta geração será considerada responsável pelo sangue de todos os profetas, derramado desde o princípio do mundo: 51desde o sangue de Abel até o sangue de Zacarias, que foi morto entre o altar e o santuário. Sim, eu digo a vocês, esta geração será considerada responsável por tudo isso.
52“Ai de vocês, peritos na lei, porque se apoderaram da chave do conhecimento. Vocês mesmos não entraram e impediram os que estavam prestes a entrar!”
53Quando Jesus saiu dali, os fariseus e os mestres da lei começaram a opor-se fortemente a ele e a interrogá-lo com muitas perguntas, 54esperando apanhá-lo em algo que dissesse.
